Join nowI'm trying to get QB Desktop 21 working with Amazon Workspaces, where the data file is on a mapped drive from an Amazon EC2 instance running Windows Server 2019. The error I'm getting when trying to open QB on the client Workspace is:
Problem
It appears that the QuickBooks software on computer DIRECTORY is set up to allow shared access to the company file, but the QuickBooks software on your computer is unable to communicate with it.
Solution
The communication problem could be due to a firewall issue. If a firewall is installed on your network, you may need to reconfigure the firewall software.
I have the Amazon security group for the Workspaces and the EC2 instance set to allow all traffic between the two machines, and I've setup the Windows firewall on each machine as well. I've even tried disabling the firewall on both machines, and changing the security group to allow all traffic from anywhere.
I've also run the QuickBooks Desktop File Doctor on the EC2 instance where the data file is hosted and it doesn't find anything wrong.
And I've run the QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the EC2 instance and it scans the database folder and it says the server is running and no issues were found. I also checked the port number reported by this program and verified that the firewall on both machines has that port open, as well as TCP port 8019.
Any other ideas? Thanks,
Russell
I've come to help get QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) working with Amazon Workspaces, @russellg99.
The error you've received indicates that your network firewall is interrupting the connection between QBDT and Amazon Workspace. You're already on the right track in fixing it while opening QBDT on the client workspace. Let's perform one more suggested resolution to isolate this matter so you can get back to work in no time.
Make sure the Host Multi-User Access option is off on your workstations. These are computers connected to your network that don’t host your company files. Your server computer should be the only one hosting. To do this, here's how:
Once you're done checking all of your workstations, move on to your server computer and reset your hosting settings. Here's how:
In case the error persists, I'd recommend contacting our Technical Support team. They have the necessary tools to help fix your firewall.
Also, I'm adding this article to learn more about Windows firewall and security settings for QBDT: Set up firewall and security settings for QuickBooks Desktop. Then, feel free to visit our QuickBooks Community help website if you need tips and related articles in the future.
Please keep me posted on how it goes in the comments below. If you have other firewall concerns or inquiries about managing your QBDT company files, I'll gladly help. Take care, and wishing you continued success.
Hi Rea, thanks for that. I think I'm finally past all the networking issues now.
The problem now is that when I run QB on the client machine and try to login to the company file via a mapped drive to the server, QB crashes. It tries to login, and it displays the QB toolbar, but then before it displays the Home screen, it displays a dialog that says, "QuickBooks has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program." The only button visible is "Close the program", which causes QB to exit.
So I copied the company file to the client and then tried to login to it on the local drive, but it still crashes. Although I can login to the same company file with the same admin password just fine when I run QB on the server.
I've spent a couple of hours with Intuit support while sharing my screen, and we've tried running File Doctor, everything in the Tools Hub, as well as doing a repair and a complete uninstall and reinstall of QB on the client. But still, I can't login to the file on the client machine without it crashing. At this point I don't think there's anything wrong with company file or the QB installation on the client. I'm beginning to think there's something inherently wrong with the Amazon Workspaces environment (which is basically a virtual desktop) that's causing the problem.
If anyone has actually gotten QB to work on Amazon Workspaces, I'd like to hear how you did it.
Thanks,
Russell
We don't recommend our clients to use AWS or other VPS services to host their QBD. When you encountered any technical problem, their support won't help you optimally. We recommend our clients with other options.
Thanks. However, my question isn't really about Amazon's support.
My question is if anyone has actually ever gotten QuickBooks to run on Amazon Workspaces.
Thanks,
Russell
Allow me to share some details when running QuickBooks to Amazon Workspaces, russellg99.
Generally, you can host QuickBooks software on Amazon Workspaces that provides a Windows 7 virtual desktop in the cloud. This allows you to operate QuickBooks and access the features virtually from any device. However, you cannot get Windows 10 multi-session experience with Amazon WorkSpaces. You'll want to contact Amazon Support to double-check why QuickBooks stopped working with AWS. This way, they'll be able to give you alternatives on what to do.
In addition, QuickBooks Desktop works with several third-party applications that you can integrate. For more information and lists of apps that you can check, go to our QuickBooks Marketplace: Apps For QuickBooks Desktop.
Feel free to let us know if you have questions about QuickBooks Hosting. We're always right here to make sure we get you covered.
Follow the steps to download the QuickBooks Tools Hub and run QuickBooks File Doctor. This tool runs a mini repair of your server and firewall. When it's finished, open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.
If you still see an error message, move on to Step 2.
Download and install the latest release of your version of QuickBooks Desktop.
I want to do this, too. Were you able to get it to work?
