Error 1606 Could not Access Network Location updating 2018 desktop. QB is trying to connect to the MyPictures folder on network which no longer exists. How do I fix this?

The desktop computer where QB2018 Desktop files are installed used to be connected to a main server in the company's office. When everyone started working from home, we went to cloud storage and the desktop with QB is no longer connected to the server, which does not even exist anymore. QB has not been updated since 2019 because of the error 1606 which says "Error 1606 Could Not Access Network location "\\XXXX\home$\Username\MyDocuments\MyPictures\". Now that we are beiing forced to upgrade to QB2021, I wanted to at least do the final 2018 upgrade. I presume QB is looking for something as simple as an Icon, but I don't know how to address it searching for a path that does not exist anymore. NOTE: I am not aware that any of the Desktop files were on the network, so I am not sure why it's even looking for something under "MyPictures" there.

Hi, @ncbachelor2008-h.

Thank you for sharing the details of your concern. I'm here to guide you with the troubleshooting steps to isolate the error you're having.

To get started, I recommend fixing the issue with QuickBooks File Doctor.

First, download and install QuickBooks Tool Hub.

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version of QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

From the tool hub, follow these steps:

  1. Select Company File Issues.
  2. Click on Quick Fix my File.
  3. Hit OK when it completes and launch your QuickBooks.
