QB Database Server Manager GUI will not open (QBServerUtilityMgr.exe)

Hello-

I have been trying to solve this for ages and I hope the experienced users here can help get it working again.

Problem:

The DB mgr GUI will not load (QBServerUtilityMgr.exe)- the tray icon appears but goes away either on its own or when rolled over.

Win10x64 up to date

QB Premiere 2023 (had 2020 prior).

I have removed QB and reinstalled, repaired, removed 2020, tried various compatibility modes, even replaced w same file from another machine where the DB mgr loads fine. Disabled/enabled the service/made sure logon was local etc.

I followed steps from another post about multiple versions x32/x64 etc but no luck.

Oddly the Network Issues section of the QB Tool Hub gives a pop up message saying the DB mgr cannot run until it is set up/is not available and to run QB and enable hosting to fix. (paraphrasing)

Workaround:

I CAN run QB on the server and enable hosting and works fine. Seems the service "QuickBooksDB33" is fine?

I would be most grateful for any suggestions to help resolve this issue and get the DB mgr going so I can scan the company files folder.

Thank you.

I was having this exact problem after the upgrade to Enterprise 24. For me, it turned out that the WMI service was corrupt. My system info was totally blank, and I could not stop, start, or restart the WMI service. When I went to Services and Applications" and select "More Actions" -> Properties, all the WMI items were "invalid class." I used the information in the link below to correct the problem, then restarted the workstation:

After restart, the GUI popped up, and I was able to scan the necessary folders to get multiuser working again.

I appreciate you for reaching out, cn133. Let me share with you some important detailed information about multi-user setup.

Initially, you've done a great job of completing the initial troubleshooting steps. Based on the issue you are facing, it seems that we need to take further steps to get your QuickBooks software up and running.

To begin with, we'll need to restart the QuickBooks Database Service Manager, which manages the company file for multi-user access.

In addition, we'll need to configure the firewall settings to ensure that the QuickBooks software can communicate with other computers on your network. This should help resolve your issue and get your QuickBooks software running smoothly again.

For QuickBooks Desktop 2023, you might encounter issues or errors due to blocked dynamic ports and specific port numbers. To fix this, simply restarting the QuickBooks Database Service Manager should refresh the connection and improve performance.

Here’s how:

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop from your server computer.
  2. Tap the File menu to choose Open or Restore Company.
  3. Then, tick the radio button for Open a company file and choose the file you’re working on.
  4. Once opened, select Next to mark the box for Open file in multi-user mode and tap the Open option.
  5. Next, log in to the company file and navigate to the File menu to select Close Company/Logoff.
  6. This action will close the company file on your server.
  7. Launch the Windows Start menu and enter the Data

You should check out this article for more detailed troubleshooting steps: Use QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

Thank you- but it does not appear you understood my post. There are no issues with networking- and I described none- all computers access the mapped server comapny files folder normally. Also as I stated when hosted from a QB instance on the server all workstations log in multi user mode without issue. I have restarted the service many many times it has no effect on the database manager issue.

It seems like you're experiencing some technical issues with QuickBooks Database Server Manager. Based on the information provided, it appears that you've already tried various troubleshooting steps, including reinstalling, repairing, and enabling hosting.

Let's attempt to log in to your QBDB33 if you have the necessary permissions or access. This might be the cause of the restriction if you are not logged in as an administrator. Furthermore, please ensure to turn on the hosting within the program.

Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu.
  3. Open the Control Panel and then select User Accounts.
  4. Find the QBDataServiceUserXX for your version of QuickBooks Desktop. For QuickBooks Desktop 2020, look for QBDataServiceUser30. For the 2019 version, look for QBDataServiceUser29. The number goes down for each version.
  5. Select Change the account type and then Administrator. Then select Change Account Type.
  6. Select Apply to save your changes.

Once everything is set, then start rebooting the system.

Follow the steps below:

1. Press the Windows key+R to bring up the Run window.

2. Type services.msc, then press Enter. You can also search for services. msc on the Windows search bar.

3. In the services window, look for the QuickBooksDBXX service that matches your version:

  • QuickBooks 2020: QuickBooksDB30
  • QuickBooks 2019: QuickBooksDB29
  • QuickBooks 2018: QuickBooksDB28

4. Double-click the QuickBooksDBXX service.

5. Set the Startup Type to Automatic and Service Status to Running or Started.

6. Go to the Recovery tab.

7. From the First failure drop-down, select Restart the Service. This automatically restarts the QuickBooksDB service if it fails. Do the same for Second failure and Subsequent failures.

8. Select OK to save the changes.

9. Reboot your computer.

However, given the complexity of the issue and the various attempts you've made to resolve it, I recommend reaching out to QuickBooks Desktop support for further assistance. They may be able to provide more specific guidance or even a solution tailored to your situation.

I understand that technical issues like this can be frustrating, but with the right support and resources, I'm hopeful that you'll be able to resolve the problem and get the QuickBooks Database Server Manager up and running as needed.

I also uninstalled again- and deleted ALL remaining folders in PFCommon, PFiles, etc- everywhere. Used CCleaner for registry multiple passes/reboots untill all QB remnants were gone. Checked Services as well to make sure clear. Reinstall. Same problem. tried from different user accounts- same problem.

Well, after months of this issue and ignoring it, I found this thread to attempted to fix it.  I did the following which eventually worked.

1) Uninstall Quickbooks from the control panel and everything else that said Intuit or Quickbooks in the uninstaller.

2) Restart

3) Install from downloads.quickbooks.com and run all updates

4) Restart

>>  Quickbooks Database Manager continued to not launch from the shortcut in my start.

5) I went to the Quickbooks Database Manager shortcut which took me to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks

6) I then clicked on QBServerUtilityMgr.exe and that did work!

7) I then created a new shortcut of QBServerUtilityMgr.exe and called it QB Database Manager

>> That worked for me but your mileage might vary!!  Good Luck!!!

Thank you this fixed it! I am going to post the info here in case that link goes away one day.

Diagnosis:

Go to WMI Control in Computer Management under "Services and Applications" and select "More Actions" -> Properties, it displays the following:-

Failed to initialize all required WMI classes.

Win32_Processor: WMI: Invalid class

Win32_WMISetting: WMI: Invalid class

Security information: Successful

Win32_OperatingSystem: WMI Invalid class

Solution steps:

Run these commands given below from Admin command prompt (run as administrator) to reset WMI components which should not be harm other Windows services or components.

From command prompt navigate to C:\windows\system32\wbem

* note (orig line did not work so I edited it and removed the > from the string: C:\>windows\system32\wbem)

regsvr32 /s %systemroot%\system32\scecli.dll

regsvr32 /s %systemroot%\system32\userenv.dll

regsvr32 cimwin32.dll

mofcomp cimwin32.mof

mofcomp cimwin32.mfl

mofcomp rsop.mof

mofcomp rsop.mfl

for /f %s in ('dir /b /s *.dll') do regsvr32 /s %s

for /f %s in ('dir /b *.mof') do mofcomp %s

for /f %s in ('dir /b *.mfl') do mofcomp %s

regsvr32 wmisvc.dll

wmiprvse /regserver

/end of steps

I did not even have to reboot and DB manager works again!

I tried everything else under the sun and verifying the issue under WMI in Computer Management made me comfortable trying this.  Only takes a few minutes and could have saved me hours if I tried it first.  Thank you!
