Disclaimer, I'm rather traumatized from a horrible experience trying to change to QBO from Desktop for Mac back in 2017 or so...when I was able to recover everything from that mess back into Desktop for Mac 2015 it wasn't much later that there was a whole thing with the MacOS update making QB stop working entirely or something, and as a result I've still been using the 2015 version and running El Capitan 10.11.6 ever since. I did purchase the 2019 version around when it came out with intentions of sorting out updating it then, but not long after that my mom went into the hospital and life was too crazy to do anything with it again until now, plus I am horribly behind on my actual bookkeeping as well.
So. I have a not current or balanced company file that still has downloaded transactions needing to be matched etc. in it running in 2015 on MacOS 10.11.6. I am wondering:
- Do I need to get my company file to a certain state of being caught up etc. in order to upgrade and move it to a new version?
- Should I be updating to the 2019 version I bought or the most current one? Since I never downloaded or installed it is there any chance they'll let me upgrade for less/free?
- Do I update the OS or QB first?
- If/when I update the OS do I go all the way to the most current option?
I'm guessing I'm not even necessarily asking all of the questions I should be and am open to any and all advice or instructions.
Thanks!
Hi iris5426!
Allow me to assist you in upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
It's always advisable to keep your data accurate and updated. You'll want to review, categorize, and match the downloaded transaction and reconcile your accounts. Please check these articles for reference:
Also, please note that the QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2015 is unsupported, and soon 2019, too. You'll want to consider the QuickBooks Mac Plus 2022 instead. Visit this microsite for more details: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/desktop/mac/.
In addition, each version of QuickBooks Desktop has system requirements for a better experience. From the microsite I added above, check the QuickBooks Mac Plus 2022 System Requirements section for more details.
Check this article for the system requirements of the 2019 version: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2019 and Enterprise Solutions 19.0.
I understand that you haven't used the QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 and you'd like to upgrade for a lesser price. I suggest you reach out to our Support Team so they can share some upgrade options.
Lastly, here's the article you can check on how to install QuickBooks Desktop for Mac: Install and set up QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
Post again here if you need more assistance with this. Take care!

Afaik, QB Desktop 2019 is supported until May 2022.
Thanks for the reply! So should I be updating QB or the OS first once I feel like I have my file ready to go?
Hi iris5426,
Yes, you're right. You'll want to have a supported version and you may upgrade your OS, too. Here's the link for QB Mac: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/desktop/mac
You can also check about upgrading your company file for your additional reference.
Let me know if you have other questions in mind.
You won't be able to install QBD 2019 unless you upgraded OS beforehand.
