Upgrading from 2013 to 2020

I am currently using QuickBooks pro 2013 desktop and want to upgrade to QuickBooks pro 2020, I don’t use payroll. Can I do this or do I have to upgrade to 2016 first?

I hope you're enjoying this beautiful day so far.

You can upgrade to QuickBooks 2020 Pro from 2013 Pro. However, you'll need to purchase it first. Once you've purchased QuickBooks, you can install it then update your company file.

Before you update your company file, it's always best to first create a back up in the 2013 version. I've included the steps below on how to create a backup.

1. Open the File menu at the top.

2. Choose Back Up Company, then Create Local Backup.

3. Click Next, then choose where you want to save your back up copy.

Once your back up has completed, you can then open the company file in 2020.

We help a client converting their 2013 to 2020 in one jump easily. Install the trial license of Pro 2020 prior to purchase it.

Welcome to the thread, DTMort.

Upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop 2012 to 2020 version is just the same process from the steps given above.

You'll need to create a backup file first to make sure that the data will be saved before upgrading. You can follow the steps provided by my colleague @Tori B to accomplish it.

So here's a scenario...currently using QBooks Pro 2012. Would not only like to upgrade but need to move it to a new computer as well...so:

How do I accomplish both the upgrade from 2012 to 2020 as well as moving it all to a different/new computer

Allow me to help you from here, @Rook2223. I'll be sharing the steps to upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop Pro.

Before upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2012 to 2020 version, you'll need to prepare a backup file to ensure saving your data.

Here's how:

From the File menu, select Back Up Company, then Create Local Backup.
Local Backup is the option to choose.
Click Options from the dropdown menu.
Choose Browse and choose a location to save the backup copy in the "Tell us where to save your backup copies" section.
Select OK.
Choose whether to back up automatically in the Create Backup window and then select Options to customize the options for automatic backups.
To create a new backup schedule, click the New button from the Schedule Backups section.
Click Finish.

Create a backup file on your QBD 2012, install QBD 2020 on your new machine, then restore the backup file on your QBD 2020. If you encounter any error, you may need to install QBD 2015 on your old machine to upgrade the file as the stepping stone. Contact us in private for assistance.
