There's a way to import a CSV file in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). To do this, you have to install the QuickBooks Import Excel and CSV toolkit in which, the toolkit contains the following:

Please let me know in this thread if you have more questions about importing transactions or anything else QuickBooks. I'm more than willing to assist.

Our client has a proposal template built into Quickbooks. She wants to import our product data so that she does not have to type it in every time she creates a proposal.
Hi jtfreeman12,
Thank you for the clarification. It's indeed much easier to import the list of products you sell than to type them. You'll want to follow the steps below.
You can find more information in this article: Import or export MS Excel files.

Our client has an existing template for proposals and when we import our file and get the mapping screen, it is not the fields of the custom template but a set of fields that Quickbooks has created and we cannot edit the fields on the left.
We are trying to import fields like these:
Quantity
Unit of Measure
Description
Price
Our csv file has this data but the fields on the left under ITEM do not match.
Am I being clear?
Our customer has a custom template that we are trying to populate.
Fields like:
Quantity
Unit of Measure
Description
Price
We have this data but when we import our file and get to the step for mapping, we do not see the template that has been created, and the only option that makes sense is the Item choice. None of the premade fields match the fields we have and when we import the file the data does not go into the customer template. Is this clear?
Thanks for reaching out to us, @jtfreeman12. Let me provide some information about importing templates in QuickBooks Desktop.
Customized templates can be copied from one company file to another. This saves you time when it comes to personalizing templates for estimates, invoices, and other forms if you have numerous business files or need to create a new company in QuickBooks Desktop.
However, please note that you cannot import customized templates created in newer versions of QuickBooks into older versions, nor can you import templates created in one regional edition of QuickBooks into another. For example, the Canadian edition of QuickBooks cannot export templates to the US version. I suggest to recreate the template, then import again.
The following article will help you learn how to use and customize form templates in QuickBooks Desktop: Use and customize form templates.
You may want to know how to fix common template issues in QuickBooks Desktop. Please refer to this article: Fix common issues when you use and customize templates.
Keep me posted if you have further questions about importing templates in QuickBooks Desktop. I'm always here to help you. Take care!
Ok, so once I make a custom template, how do I import a csv file to populate the fields in the template?
As an example, I have created a proposal template that has the following fields:
Item Type
Qty
Unit of Measure
Description
Total Costs
I want to import a file that has 30 products with these fields. This is where we are running into an issue. How do we import this csv file into a custom template? THANK YOU for your help!
Hello there, @jtfreeman12.
I'm here to add information about importing CSV files in QuickBooks Desktop.
In QuickBooks Desktop, you can import a list in the CSV format so long as you have installed the QuickBooks Import Excel and CSV toolkit. However, this does not include the proposal template.
You can check for third-party applications integrated with QuickBooks Online to help you import templates. You can go to your Apps menu or use this link to see the details of the apps: QuickBooks App Store.
You can also check this article on how to import or export CSV files in QuickBooks Desktop: Import/export CSV files.
Let me know if you need additional assistance in importing templates. I'm always here to help. Have a great day.
You can prepare the Item List data with the following template
Item Name | Item Type | Is Active | Sales Description | Purchase Description | Tax Code | Account/Income Account | Expense/COGS Account | Asset Account | Cost | Preferred Vendor | Price or % | Reorder Point | Manuf Part Number | Unit of Measure | Max |
Green Widget | Inventory Part | Y | Widget Sales | Widget Purchase | Tax | General Sales | General Cost of Goods Sold | Inventory Asset | 10 | ABC Vendor | 15 | 10 | 12345 | 30
General Services | Service | Y | Services Sales | Services Purchase | Non | Specialized Sales | Specialized Expenses | 8 | DEF Vendor | 9
General Parts | Non-inventory Part | Y | Part Sales | Part Purchases | Tax | General Sales | General Cost of Goods Sold | 7 | GHI Vendor | 8 |

i'm looking for a way to be able to load invoices via .csv or excel
QB Desktop or QB Online?
Hello ERICMOY,
Thanks for connecting with the QuickBooks Community! As my colleague mentioned, you would need to get a third party that integrates with QuickBooks to import invoices as well. You can also follow the instructions provided by Fiat, which mentions using the IIF feature to import invoice data in XLS format. The template for this can be found in the link below, which Fiat shared in the link below:
If you need anything else in QuickBooks, let us know. We're available to help at any time.
You can use a 3rd party tool to import invoices in CSV or XLS files. It's a $199 one time license and you can get $100 cashback to purchase it via a partner.
