Export QB 2020 Prem+ to use in QB 2020 Mac

Hi,

I exported my QB 2020 database as I would like to use it in the Mac 2020 version. I use lots of assembly items which are not available in the Mac version. Even though an assembly item is an inventory item it is converted to a non-inventory item on the Mac. After I have thousands of items I now would need to change all of them to inventory items.

An additional problem is, that I have grouped my assembly items. I created a "header item" for the group, which is not used for anything else but to group of assembly items.

On the Mac I cannot first change the header item to an inventory item as it has sub-items. I have to change the sub-items first and the header item last. The problem now is, that if I want to link the sub-items back to the header item it is not available for selection.

For the few items I have changed I needed to create a new header item to be able to link the sub-items again.

Did anybody run into this problem and has a solution?

Thanks in advance.

Gerd

QBD Mac has similar features with QBD Pro. I would recommend to keep using QBD Premier for your case. You may install a virtual platform (e.g Parallels) and Windows OS to run Premier on your Mac. Another option, put your license and company file(s) on a QB cloud hosting.

Thanks for providing us in-depth details on what happened when converting your file to QuickBooks for Mac, gerdgoebel.

Once you migrate your company file to the Mac version, the assembly items will be converted into non-inventory part items. The Assembly feature is only available in QuickBooks Premier for Windows.

I appreciate you for coming up with a workaround where you create a new header item to link the sub-items again.

For more details about what are the data won’t be converted from Windows to Mac, check out this article: Convert a QuickBooks for Windows file to QuickBooks for Mac. Then, go to the Data that isn't converted from Windows to QuickBooks Desktop for Mac section.

You'll want to try the recommendation provided by Fiat Lux - ASIA to install a virtual platform to run QuickBooks Premier on your software.

Thanks for your reply, I actually went through the document before exporting the QB W database.

I understand that assembly items don't exist in the Mac version, but my point was, after an assembly item is an inventory item it should also convert as an inventory item on the Mac.

I actually run my QB Prem+ on the Mac with Parallels, but my colleagues don't use Parallels, thus, they would prefer the Mac version over the Windows version. And I actually would also prefer to use a Mac version.

I had made the suggestion several times to also introduce assembly items in the Mac version years back when I was a beta tester for several QB versions. I never understood why this actually never happened.

Regarding the issue with the header item is not available to link to from the sub-items after changing them to inventory parts, any idea why this is? The header item is not visible and thus, cannot be selected. This does not make sense to me.

Hi there, @gerdgoebel.

In this case, the multi-user mode may be turned on. This is the possible reason the Subitem Of column is grayed out or not visible when editing item lists in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). We'll have to ensure your QBDT is in single-user mode. Here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Check the option Switch to Multi-User Mode. This will indicate you're QBDT is in single-user mode. If not, you'll have to click Switch to Single-User Mode option.
  3. Once done, you can now edit the item lists under the Subitem Of column.

You can also run the Item Listing report so you can keep track of the latest item details such as their cost, quantity on hand, etc. I'll guide you with the steps how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu, and then choose Reports Center.
  2. Click the List tab, and then pick Item Listing
  3. Select Run to open the report.

Also, you're able to customize your reports to get the specific information that you need. Here's an article that best suits the topic: How to Customize reports in QBDT?

If you need further assistance in setting up your inventory, I'd suggest contacting our Customer Care team. they have the tools to verify and perform screen share to get to the bottom of this.
