Fraudulent call about my subscription

I got a call a while ago from 'Jennifer', who claimed to be calling from Quickbooks and saying that they had a problem with the payment for the renewal of our subscription.

Because I had renewed our subscription last month and received confirmation, I was suspicious. I asked her how they had attempted to run the payment. When she said with a bank card, I asked for the last 4 digits of the card. Because that didn't match any of the cards we have or have recently had with our bank, I was even more suspicious. She then proceeded to ask me for a different card that they could use to pay the bill of $500 to renew for 2 years of 'technical support and bookkeeping,' I stopped her and pointed out that this was way more than what we currently pay for services, and I would need to verify the information that she was providing. She had a distinct Indian or South Asian accent. At my request, she stated that she was calling from California and gave me the number 888-279-2801 to call back to take care of our 'overdue' bill.

When I subsequently called back, the number rang multiple times without any kind of automated announcement or phone tree to indicate who I was calling. After disconnecting, within less than a minute, I received a callback from a male with a distinct Indian or South Asian accent claiming to be from Quickbooks Technical Support. I asked directly, "Are you actually with Quickbooks or are you a 3rd party vendor for Quickbooks," upon which he confirmed that they were. Needless to say, the remainder of the call did not go as he would have liked. Searching their phone number turned up no legitimate business that is associated with the number.

Fraudulent call about my subscription

Hello,

Intuit will not call to get any kind of payment information over the phone..  If there is a problem with your subscription, you will be notified in product with a pop-up message and also receive emails to the registered address regarding your account.

Here is an article about security and how to protect yourself from possible "bad actors".

Thank you. Although this was the first time I have received a fraudulent call from someone posing to be from QB, I was able to recognize that it was fraudulent. Nevertheless, it's useful to know that QB will never make an unsolicited call about subscription payment.

Because this was the first time that I have received a fraudulent call from someone claiming to be from QB and informing me that they were having difficulty renewing my subscription. After searching the forum, I didn't find any other posts with this subject, so I decided to post my experience to inform others who might have a similar experience.

The response from MarshallA that QB will never make an unsolicited call about subscription renewals provides additional useful information to my post, so thank you.

Just received a call from 844-644-0833 claiming they needed an updated credit card for our QuickBooks subscription.  When I asked what company they were calling, they said a company that we manage that does not use QuickBooks.  It was certainly a scam.

Thank you for sharing, TJShannon.

Yes, that certainly sounds like a scammer. QuickBooks will only reach out if you request a call back, and we leave updating the card for payment up to you and on your own time.

The following linked articles cover contacting the official QuickBooks Support Team and how to update your subscription payment.

You're always welcome here in the Community if you have any other questions or concerns. Take care!

Fraudulent call about my subscription

Hello,  Well, it does not seem like I am as sharp as the group on here.  I have been scammed for a few yrs.  I caught on last year in Oct. 2021.  I received two calls this past week for renewal of my subscription.  I ask those questions ya'll ask are you a third party answer No, are you quickbooks? Yes.  I tried to call both numbers back and could not get them.  I then looked up Quickbooks number and called them and they said I do not have to have a subscription with my 2016 Pro (we only do invoices) do not do payroll or anything else.  Quickbooks also told me they would not call.  I have gone back and looked at my card statements and found they scammed me back in March of this year for $499.95.  I feel so stupid!  It is no telling how long I have be paying for this scam and maybe twice a year.  I call my card again and they can only go back 60 days.  They are going to try to dispute that one in March but it might not work.  Well, they will not get me again.  I might even have my card number changed.

Wish I would have checked into this site earlier.

Stupid is as Stupid does (thats me)

@clippinchick   Don't be so hard on yourself.  Just learn and move on.

Know that QB will never call, unless you request support to do so. Be careful with emails, as well.  Even with the email address that Intuit/ QB team will tell you is good, you could still get scammed.  To contact QB, use the link within your account.  Never go off of what Google might have.  Most of those are suspicious.

I'm sorry you got scammed.  I would change the card, just to be safe.

Good luck.

Just sharing a recent scam attempt along these lines.

I received a voice mail from [removed] that left this computer-recorded voice message:

Hi, this is an automated reminder message from QuickBooks support.  Dear customer, We were unable to process the payment card on file as either it's not in service or might not have enough funds in your account.to make the payment.  You can pay by calling us at our toll-free [removed] between Monday to Friday 8-5 Pacific time.  That number again is [removed].  Please renew your subscription as soon as possible to continue using your QuickBooks products and services.  Thank you.

I logged in and, of course, my account was up to date and my last automatic payment went through just fine.

If I hadn't been in business for over 40 years I might have fallen for this!!!!!!!!!! Thank God for the receipt and some experience under my belt!

Thanks for sharing this, Jason.

You're right, phishing, spam, and other types of hoax emails are a huge problem. Your awareness and proactive approach are your best defenses against these scams.

It's wise to be cautious with any email asking for personal information. Scams can look very convincing, but there are a few key things to look for that can help you spot them:

  • Intuit will never ask for your personal information, like your Social Security number or credit card details, in an email.
  • Links in official Intuit emails will always go to an intuit.com web address.
  • Official emails from Intuit will always come from an address ending in @intuit.com or @e.intuit.com.

If you're ever in doubt about an email that claims to be from Intuit, you should report it to our security team. The best way to do this is to forward the email to security@intuit.com. This helps us track and block these scams to protect all our customers.

For more information and tips, you can also check out our detailed article on how to identify suspicious activity, phishing scams, and potential fraud.

I just received such a call telling me that the credit card had been declined. I asked what the last four digits of the card were, and she couldn't tell me. I knew that we renewed in early December, so I was pretty sure it was a scam. I got her number (Removed) and said I'd check into it and call her back.

I unfortunately just fell for this, but thankfully I caught on part way through the call. I wanted to highlight how it happened for me so others don't fall for it.

They left two voice messages on our business number, but they were real people instead of robotic voices so I wasn't immediately on alert, though I should have looked more closely at the phone numbers leaving the messages since they came from two different ones. We changed banks earlier this year, so I thought maybe they had the old card on file and that's why they were calling. Had it not been for that, I probably would have been more likely to notice the signs sooner.

I logged into my Quickbooks account and couldn't find any information about a subscription, so I called the number they gave, and she said something about the payment for the service of the account had been separated from any type of subscriptions so I likely wouldn't see it on my account dashboard. Things seemed legitimate until she said it was going to be a charge of $699 for all of the services. Since I don't use the account for anything outside of paying invoices, I thought maybe one of our previous finance people had set up an account I was unaware of before I took over bookkeeping. She said it was probably under the business's phone number, but I verified no account is linked to that number by trying to sign in with it. I told her I rescinded authorization to process the payment because I needed to look into it further, then I called my bank to put a hold on my card just in case. They're sending me a new one.

I receive at least 2 QuickBooks scam calls a week.  Today's call from "Jordan" was a bit more convincing as they used one of our employee's names stating he was asking for Gross Sales and "Jordan" provided me with a Ticket #46897128 when I asked for some type of reference number.

Sales information is not in the employees wheelhouse so I knew right away it was a scam.  I do however play nice on the phone to obtain as much information as possible.  Played like I didn't know the employee and asked if he was sure he reached the right business.  I asked which State he was working out of and he said India which was obvious. I asked for for his phone number and was given [removed].  Funny how the number he was calling from was a New York area code and registered to a resident whom I won't name or his number as it's a stolen phone ID.  Would love to have a few thousand people call these scammers using the same Ticket # and waste their time on the phone playing dumb and providing them with  100% bogus info.

Hello there. We can log these fraudulent activities by reporting them directly to our Intuit Online Security Center.

I know how inconvenient it can be to receive repeated scam calls while managing these issues, as it wastes your time and can be exhausting.

When you report them, Intuit’s security team can analyze the patterns. It allows our team to investigate the source and creates an official record of the incident for your protection.

In addition to calls, fraudulent activity can also be sent via email. You can refer to this article for tips on identifying suspicious activity, phishing scams, and potential fraud.

We get these call several times per week. I blame myself, because even with a very keen scan radar, they got me a couple of years ago. I was unsure, because I had moved my QB from Desktop for Mac to all online when Intuit stopped supporting Mac upgrades. So I wasn't 100% sure what I was paying for. Live & learn.

A caller with a British accent (w/Indian cadence) says he is Kevin Williams from Quickbooks Pro. I've also had a number of calls from an Indian woman. They claimed that the subscription that "you've always paid, every year in a split payment in March and Sept is necessary to keep access to QB, to get necessary software updates, and the service agreement. We just need to update your card on file." They had my last 4 digits correct, but I had closed that account.

I haven't had desktop QB in years, and I pay for my QB online and payroll monthly, so after paying twice, I figured it out. But this is a very well-thought out scam, and they have answers for all your questions. They've even sent me very official-looking emails with a list of the services it's supposed to cover. The price is always $899 or $799 or $699 - if you challenge the cost, they'll offer you a special discount and drop $100. I literally just hung up on one now: the Caller ID says Quick Book Pro (no s) [PII Removed]. One of my clients got scammed by them last month, but I heard about it and was able to help him cancel the cc payment fast enough.
