Fraudulent call about my subscription

I got a call a while ago from 'Jennifer', who claimed to be calling from Quickbooks and saying that they had a problem with the payment for the renewal of our subscription.

Because I had renewed our subscription last month and received confirmation, I was suspicious. I asked her how they had attempted to run the payment. When she said with a bank card, I asked for the last 4 digits of the card. Because that didn't match any of the cards we have or have recently had with our bank, I was even more suspicious. She then proceeded to ask me for a different card that they could use to pay the bill of $500 to renew for 2 years of 'technical support and bookkeeping,' I stopped her and pointed out that this was way more than what we currently pay for services, and I would need to verify the information that she was providing. She had a distinct Indian or South Asian accent. At my request, she stated that she was calling from California and gave me the number 888-279-2801 to call back to take care of our 'overdue' bill.

When I subsequently called back, the number rang multiple times without any kind of automated announcement or phone tree to indicate who I was calling. After disconnecting, within less than a minute, I received a callback from a male with a distinct Indian or South Asian accent claiming to be from Quickbooks Technical Support. I asked directly, "Are you actually with Quickbooks or are you a 3rd party vendor for Quickbooks," upon which he confirmed that they were. Needless to say, the remainder of the call did not go as he would have liked. Searching their phone number turned up no legitimate business that is associated with the number.

Fraudulent call about my subscription

Hello,

Intuit will not call to get any kind of payment information over the phone..  If there is a problem with your subscription, you will be notified in product with a pop-up message and also receive emails to the registered address regarding your account.

Here is an article about security and how to protect yourself from possible "bad actors".

Fraudulent call about my subscription

Thank you. Although this was the first time I have received a fraudulent call from someone posing to be from QB, I was able to recognize that it was fraudulent. Nevertheless, it's useful to know that QB will never make an unsolicited call about subscription payment.

Fraudulent call about my subscription

Because this was the first time that I have received a fraudulent call from someone claiming to be from QB and informing me that they were having difficulty renewing my subscription. After searching the forum, I didn't find any other posts with this subject, so I decided to post my experience to inform others who might have a similar experience.

The response from MarshallA that QB will never make an unsolicited call about subscription renewals provides additional useful information to my post, so thank you.

Fraudulent call about my subscription

Just received a call from 844-644-0833 claiming they needed an updated credit card for our QuickBooks subscription.  When I asked what company they were calling, they said a company that we manage that does not use QuickBooks.  It was certainly a scam.

Thank you for sharing, TJShannon.

Yes, that certainly sounds like a scammer. QuickBooks will only reach out if you request a call back, and we leave updating the card for payment up to you and on your own time.

The following linked articles cover contacting the official QuickBooks Support Team and how to update your subscription payment.

Fraudulent call about my subscription

Hello,  Well, it does not seem like I am as sharp as the group on here.  I have been scammed for a few yrs.  I caught on last year in Oct. 2021.  I received two calls this past week for renewal of my subscription.  I ask those questions ya'll ask are you a third party answer No, are you quickbooks? Yes.  I tried to call both numbers back and could not get them.  I then looked up Quickbooks number and called them and they said I do not have to have a subscription with my 2016 Pro (we only do invoices) do not do payroll or anything else.  Quickbooks also told me they would not call.  I have gone back and looked at my card statements and found they scammed me back in March of this year for $499.95.  I feel so stupid!  It is no telling how long I have be paying for this scam and maybe twice a year.  I call my card again and they can only go back 60 days.  They are going to try to dispute that one in March but it might not work.  Well, they will not get me again.  I might even have my card number changed.

Wish I would have checked into this site earlier.

Stupid is as Stupid does (thats me)

@clippinchick   Don't be so hard on yourself.  Just learn and move on.

Know that QB will never call, unless you request support to do so. Be careful with emails, as well.  Even with the email address that Intuit/ QB team will tell you is good, you could still get scammed.  To contact QB, use the link within your account.  Never go off of what Google might have.  Most of those are suspicious.

I'm sorry you got scammed.  I would change the card, just to be safe.

Good luck.

Just sharing a recent scam attempt along these lines.

I received a voice mail from [removed] that left this computer-recorded voice message:

Hi, this is an automated reminder message from QuickBooks support.  Dear customer, We were unable to process the payment card on file as either it's not in service or might not have enough funds in your account.to make the payment.  You can pay by calling us at our toll-free [removed] between Monday to Friday 8-5 Pacific time.  That number again is [removed].  Please renew your subscription as soon as possible to continue using your QuickBooks products and services.  Thank you.

I logged in and, of course, my account was up to date and my last automatic payment went through just fine.
