Marking up estimates

Desktop Quickbooks Pro2018 user.  When creating a retail estimate, the markup (price level) dropdown gives me the option (I have set up the price level option), however when I select my choice, it does not remain or convert the total price.  I am trying to markup my service costs by a percentage so I can see a true estimate vs actual report.

I can manually enter a percentage, however it does not give me the option to round up (like you can in a price level).

Marking up estimates

Thanks for reaching out the Community forum, pappabake.

When the total price doesn't convert or change when choosing a markup, it could be that the service item doesn't have a sale price. To isolate the issue, I recommend checking the item. Make sure that a Sales Price is being entered.

To check, here's what you'll need to do:

  1. Go to the Lists menu at the top.
  2. Select Item List
  3. Locate and open the item.
  4. Hit Edit Markup.. button.
  5. In the Edit Markup window, check Sales Price column.

On the other hand, since you're using a percentage, the amount is dependent on the percentage entered. To have a round-up amount, you can adjust the percentage into a whole.

Marking up estimates

Thank you MirriamM for your reply!  I am manually entering the rate on the estimate.  I'm not sure QB pulls from the rate cell for markup.  I'm wondering if there is a different way.  My item costs change with each estimate.  Thanks again for thinking on this.

Marking up estimates

Hi MirriamM,  Thank you for your reply.  When I enter estimates I manually enter the rate as the item cost changes every time.  I am thinking QB doesn't pull from the rate cell on the estimate when a markup is selected.  I'm curious if there is another way to have QB calculate a markup % on the rate after I manually enter it in the estimate.  Again, its difficult to know an actual cost vs estimate at project completion.
I appreciate you thinking on this and your previous reply.

I appreciate the details you gave, @pappabake.

Yes, you're correct QuickBooks doesn't pull up the mark up from the rate cell. Instead, it will be based on the total sales price. That said, having another option to calculate the markup % on the rate isn't available.

I can see how beneficial it would be to have this option available in the system. I'll do my part and personally submit this preference to our developers, so they can assess the feedback and put it under consideration.

You all have been saying you would fix it for ever all to deaf ears. If QB wanted to do this they could do it in a few minutes. They just choose not to. So sad.
