Online backup download

Hello there, @kbsf2.

Creating a backup and moving your data to another device is my priority.

When moving your data from one PC laptop to another, make sure that QuickBooks Desktop is installed on the new device.

Once done, create a backup company file from the original computer or laptop.

  1. In QuickBooks, go to the File menu and select Switch to Single-user Mode.
  2. Go to the File menu again and hover over Back up Company. Then select Create Local Backup.
  3. In the window, select Local Backup and then Next.
  4. In the Local Backup Only section, select Browse and select where you want to save your backup company file.
  5. Use the options in the Online and Local Backup section to set backup reminders. This runs a test to make sure your backup file is in good shape before you save it.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Hit Save it now and Next.

Once done, save the backup file somewhere you can easily find it. Afterward, follow the steps below to restore your company file

  1. Still, go to the File menu.
  2. Select Open or Restore Company.
  3. Click Restore a backup copy and then Next.
  4. Select Local Backup and then Next.
  5. Browse your computer for your backup company file. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb.
  6. Select a folder to decide where to save your restored company file.
  7. Then select OpenNote: If you open the backup in the same folder as your existing company file, you may overwrite your data. You can save the backup in a completely separate folder.
  8. Hit Save
  9. If you use payroll, download the latest tax table after you move your file.

If you're unable to do it, we can run the verify rebuild data. This helps fix common data issues and unexpected behavior within your company file. After that, update QuickBooks to the latest release.

Please let me know how it goes. I'm always here whenever you need help with managing QuickBooks data. Stay safe always, kbsf2

Online backup download

Thanks Sarahann, but I don't understand why creating a local backup on the old PC would help transfer data to the new PC.  I ran an QB online backup, and I can see the files in my QB data protect list, but when I pull up restore on the new machine, the data protect screen says there's no backup history, even though I'm logged on.

Online backup download

I'll make sure that you can

Since you're using Intuit Data Protect, you don't need to create and restore a local backup. To avoid errors and unusual behaviors while restoring an online backup, you'll want to make sure that you're using the latest release of QuickBooks Desktop and  Intuit Data Protect. Here's how to update them:

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Head to the Update Now tab, then click Get Updates to start the download.
  4. When the download finishes, restart QuickBooks.
  5. When prompted, accept the option to install the new release.
  6. After that, update Intuit Data Protect

If you're still unable to view the file, you can back up your files and folders again on the old computer. Then, try restoring them to the new device to further isolate the issue. Here's how:

  1. Right-click the Intuit Data Protect icon.
  2. Select Open Intuit Data Protect, then click Back up now.
  3. Choose the files and folders you’d like to back up, and select Continue.
  4. Click Backup now, then select OK.
  5. Go back to your old computer to restore the online backup.
