Join nowI just switched my company over to Quickbooks online from the desktop version. I'm having trouble changing my products (which are all categorized as services for some reason) to a non-inventory product. When I go to edit the product I've clicked change type at the top, but it won't let me save it. I get the error message: "Something's not quite right. Looks like you tried using an invalid or incorrect tax classification code. Try again with a different code." I've experimented changing the code to nontaxable but that also gives the error. I would like to have my products actually show up as products rather than going back through and re-creating them the correct way. Surely that is possible!?

Hello there, @mrc26.
There are limitations when switching companies from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO). However, you're able to easily change the product type from service to non-inventory in QBO. After changing the product type to non-inventory in the Product/Service information page, I'd recommend selecting the Choose a special category option instead of the Nontaxable one directly. From the said page, you can select the Nontaxable option to update the product type successfully. Let me guide you how.
I've attached a screenshot below that shows the last four steps.
However, in case the above steps didn't work, you can import a list of your non-inventory items to your QBO account. Then, merge them to the duplicate service items to keep your account updated. You can refer to this article for the step-by-step guide: Merge a product or service. It also includes a guide on how to reactivate a produce item.
Additionally, you can easily keep track of your product and service items in QBO. This gives you more detailed financial reports and helps you complete transactions faster. You can learn more about this through this article: Product and service items to QuickBooks Online. It includes topics about getting sales insights using reports.
Feel free to leave a comment below if you have follow-up concerns about updating product type in QBO. I'll be right here to help. Take care always.

Hi Rea,
Thanks so much! I chose the taxable option under special > standard items > and that worked. :)
Thanks for following up with the Community, mrc26.
I'm happy to hear my colleague was able to help with changing your product type.

None of these solutions really work. There is NO special tax categories, either taxable or not. So I guess once it is entered as a service you are just screwed and have to leve it that way. Stupid.
Hello,
We appreciate your feedback. You can also submit one from your QBO company straight to our product development team. Just click the Gear icon and choose Feedback.
If you have other concerns, feel free to go back to this thread.
I also am not seeing sales tax category, and when I hit edit sales tax, I get a limited list of type of items. Please know that sometimes you have actual bookkeepers and accountants (remember, the ones who bought your software all these years?) using them, and having everything limited by what you pre-determine as the proper options is really limiting. That being said, I cannot choose a non-taxable item from the list, and there is no special category. So this does not work. I have changed quite a few other items without trouble, and cannot figure out why this particular one will not work.
what DID work was clicking on the "still don't see what you're looking for" under the list, which simply had "taxable" Or "non-taxable". HOWEVER - I changed the product/service (why do you not call it items to match QBDT?) to nontaxable and it still will not allow me to change. grrr
Good afternoon, @pinnaclejudy.

It's that easy!
Keep me updated on this. It's my priority that you get taken care of today. Have a splendid day!
I have no drop down under "Sales Tax" to go to "Special Category"
Same!!! I have nothing under sales tax area when trying to edit a product. I cannot even update a price!
All that I have in that big open space is nothing or a big spinning circle. Hoping this is fixed soon! I have work to do!
Thanks for joining the thread, Linda. I have some information on why you can't see the special category under Sales Tax.
Recent updates have been made to the Products and Services category in QuickBooks Online. As part of these updates, the special category has been modified to a more general option, which may not be visible on your end. However, the new update still allows users to access the inclusions and options that were previously available in the special category.
To access these options, you'll have to click on the Edit sales tax, then choose the category you want for your products and services. You can also select the Other options and set it as a taxable or nontaxable item.
Additionally, you can change the product and service types in QuickBooks Online to categorize your items for better tracking.
Also, you can run a report to see your sales and inventory status.
Don't hesitate to send a reply if you have other concerns managing your product and services or have any QuickBooks-related inquiries. I'll be here 24/7 to guide and help you solve things out.
Is there something wrong with QB online? I don't see any of what you just said under the product page--- there is no option to edit the sales tax anymore. I can't edit any prices or anything under the product.
Let's work together to troubleshoot and resolve your issue about updating product and service item details in QuickBooks Online (QBO), Hopslinger1111. I'll walk you through each step below.
Before we do so, I'd like to verify a few details. Have you experienced a blank page while changing a product or service information? Is the sales tax feature already activated in your account?
If you're unable to edit sales tax from the product or service profile because QuickBooks shows a blank screen, we do have an ongoing investigation (INV-96720) about it. I'd recommend contacting our Customer Care team to add your account to the list of affected users. This ensures you're in the loop about the investigation's status and its fix.
If you didn't encounter the odd behavior of the system described above, this issue is likely due to the browser. Start fixing by pulling up your QBO account using a private browser (incognito). Here's how:
Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Google Chrome)
Ctrl + Shift + P (Firefox)
Control + Option + P (Safari)
Once signed in, go to the Products and Services page and update your item details.
If you're able to do so, return to your default browser and clear its cache. After that, log out and then log back into your account. This will refresh the system and remove older data that causes viewing and performance issues.
However, if this matter continues, I'd recommend using other supported browsers.
On the other hand, there'll be no option to add or edit a product or service item's sales tax once the feature isn't yet activated in your account. If you haven't already, please see this article to guide you: Set up and use sales tax in QuickBooks Online.
Once everything is all set, you'll want to run the Sales Tax Liability report to see how much sales tax you owe and then file your return and record your payment in QBO.
In case you need further assistance fixing your product and service items' attributes, please let me know in the Reply section below. I'll circle back to help you further.

Hey!
I had this issue and I was able to solve it. I had to set up the sales tax first. You should be able to find it under the TAXES tab on the left screen tool bar. once you hover over it you should see a few options but select sales tax and set that up. Once you do this you can go back to products and services page to edit your shipping accordingly. The tax option should now be visible. select non taxable, then save.
hope this helps someone!
