Buy now & saveQuickBooks reports that Internet Explorer is turned off in Windows. The latest version of Windows 10, version 20H2, has no UI mechanism by which I can turn Internet Explorer back on. Internet Explorer is NOT listed in the "Windows Features" dialogue, nor is there an available install for Internet Explorer (that I could find) on this version of Windows 10. Edge has replaced Internet Explorer (which we all know), and in version 20H2, the Internet Explorer capabilities are now embedded in Edge. Clearly QuickBooks isn't seeing that capability as Internet Explorer having been installed, so it reports a problem and promptly closes.
I have downloaded the latest patch package for this version, but I already had the latest installed. So its not that.
I have performed the Tool Hub operations to no avail. The problem persists, and QuickBooks won't open.
Please assist.

Let me help you open QB Premier 2017, sbrothers217.
I appreciate you performing all the necessary steps so you can continue using QB Premier 2017.
Before we start, please know that 2017 is no longer supported. Hence, I'm unable to provide system requirements for this type of version. Check out this link for more details: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy and upgrade information.
You need to go back to the old patch, including Windows 10, so you can open QuickBooks 2017. Then, proceed to this article: Solutions for when QuickBooks has stopped working. Follow Step 1 and 2 for the solution to help open the file.
If not, I recommend upgrading the software so you can keep using the product with its latest functions and features.
This way, I can provide which computer and specs you need to run the program. Here's the latest version you can check: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2021
On the other hand, End isn't supported in QuickBooks Desktop. Make sure to use Internet Explorer 11.0 as the default browser.
Let me show you how:
If you're still unable to open QuickBooks, I recommend chatting with our Support Team. They can check what's blocking you from using the file, and provide another option for you. They're open from:
Let me know if you need anything else by commenting below. I'm always right here to ensure you're able to open your company file.
Try reinstall your QBD 2017 on compatibility mode Win 7. Some of our team members are able running QBD 2017 on Win 10 v1909 without any issue.
The aforementioned discontinuation policy actually reflects that "your product will continue to work for you." -- that is, even if you aren't using any of the add-on services in QuickBooks Desktop. I am not using any add-on services, therefore it seems reasonable for me to expect that my version of the Desktop application would continue to work.
Backing out an operating system patch to get access to a (now) wholly deprecated feature of that operating system, nor upgrading (for a fee) are acceptable solutions, for a multitude of reasons. Not the least of which is that its replacement browser, Edge, was released in 2015, which is ample time for Intuit to have leveraged the features in that, rather than continuing to depending on IE 11 and patched appropriately before this became an issue.
Will Intuit fix the problem by patching this version of the software, or by changing its policy, or perhaps some other approach? Would someone from Intuit please let me know, so I can make appropriate plans.
Thank you.

Hello, @sbrothers217.
Yes, you're right. You can still use your QuickBooks Desktop 2017. However, access to QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Services, Live Support, Online Backup, Online Banking, and other services will be discontinued. If you don't use any of the add-on services in QuickBooks Desktop, your product will continue to work for you.
In case you’d encounter any errors in the future, you’ll not be able to subscribe to live technical support or any of the other Intuit services that can be integrated with QuickBooks Desktop. But, you can still get answers to common questions by searching the QuickBooks Support site. Our customer support no longer provides live support for products affected by service discontinuation.
You can always check this article for your reference: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy and upgrade information.
Let me know if there's anything that you need to know. I'm always here to answer them for you. Take care and have a wonderful week!
Right, except that I can't "still use" my QuickBooks Desktop without rolling back an operating system upgrade (which would in-turn, put my system at risk). So I ask again, will Intuit fix the problem by patching this version of the software, or by changing its policy, or perhaps some other approach?
Thank you for your responses to-date @MaryLandT.

QBD 2017 is an outdated version. Company won't do anything at all. You should try the workaround as I mentioned earlier. Otherwise, consider upgrading to QBD 2021.
Hi there,
I ran into the same problem. QBooks 2017 Pro stopped working after Windows 10 20H2 update. Were you able to resolve this? THANKS!!
This really works. I just did it and I have everything up and running again. I was freaking out.
1. open settings app
2. click Apps
3. manage optional features
4. click on add a feature
5. Scroll down to Internet Explorer and click on it
6. Click install
There should be a progress bar. If you don't see one hit the back arrow at top of page to return to the Manage optional Features page and you should see a progress bar there.
7. when done reboot
Tried it. Did not work for me. I'm dead in the water. I recreated all of my records by going to bank accounts, vendors, suppliers, etc and making a giant spread sheet. Really dissapointed in Intuit that they completely killed rather than just stopped supporting this software. Not going to pump more money into an upgraded version because well what are the chances they will do this to me again??
Which Windows OS do you run?
Windows 10, version 21H2
Are you using Windows 10 Pro, not Home? Last week one of our team reinstalled QBD 2018 in Windows 7 compatibility mode on Windows 10 Home 21H2 Build 19044. No issues yet.
Using Windows Home. I tried reinstalling IE 11 and even made it my default browser, rebooted and ensured IE 11 was still the default browser. Yet I still get the QB error saying IE is not installed. QB tries, but then fails on the error.
Consider to install the trial version for QBD 2015 to compare.
Tried installing trial version of QB Enterprise 22. First I made sure that IE 11 shows checked in the "Turn Windows Features On/Off" tool. So IE 11 is installed and active. Then I installed the QB trial version. I got the same error message, when I tried to Open the trial version. QB does not see that IE is installed and turned on in Windows Features in either QB version.
I would not recommend installing a supported version. That's why I mentioned the outdated version which is QBD 2015.
Where can I find a download of the QBD 2015 trial version?
Contact us in private and we may share the trial code.
