QuickBooks Desktop Pro Standard 2020 -- NON-subscription changed to subscription?

I am posting my case here in hopes that maybe someone can help -- I have had no success with phone support and only grown more and more frustrated.

 

I purchased QuickBooks Desktop Pro Standard 2020 on Amazon in May 2020.  I made sure that there was no subscription because I want to keep my costs down as I am a single person business with minimal requirements, generating invoices every so often.  This was the 3rd version of QuickBooks desktop that I purchased over the years, none of which were subscription-based.  I have been comfortable knowing that at some point, I will no longer have access to software updates and/or technical support.  I believe this is supposed to be 3 years.  I understand that Intuit QuickBooks desktop now REQUIRES a subscription for 2022, however that was absolutely not the case when I purchased the 2020 version.

 

In May of this year, I mysteriously received an email from Intuit thanking me for my order, with line items about subscription, data protect, support and data recovery.  I didn't do anything to trigger that as I only open QuickBooks every ~ 2 weeks, and this came while I had not been in it for at least a week.  Nonetheless, I found it curious so I called to find out what happened and confirm that what I had was a non-subscription version and that I would not be charged anything (or required to pay in the future unless I did want to upgrade or convert to a subscription).  From that time until a few days ago, I continued to get prompted inside QuickBooks about a subscription that was going to expire because there was no billing information on file.  Eventually, that date came and now I am locked out.

 

The best I can tell from the multiple mixed messages I have gotten from support over the various times that I have called are:

 

1. Intuit ONLY offers subscription-based desktop now -- as I said, I get that now, but that was not the case in 2020

2. I was told that my 2020 non-subscription license was converted to a 2022 subscription.  I did not do that

3. Paying Intuit more money is the only option

 

I am COMPLETELY unsatisfied as I have no documentation from Amazon or Intuit about the product that I purchased being a subscription OR that it would "stop working" in a little over 2 years.

 

I would very much appreciate someone from Intuit QuickBooks helping to restore my 2020 license, so that I can continue using the product that I purchased.  I am happy to provide all of the details and documentation necessary.  I understand that Intuit is a business and needs to make money, so I get why they want to transition to a recurring revenue business model for all customers (whether that's QuickBooks online or desktop subscription).  However, the business tactics being employed during this transition feel shady to me and I can NOT imagine that I am the only one that feels this way.

Did you install QBD 2020 yourself for the first time? Login to your CAMPS as Primary Contact and check you transaction history and license information there.

Yes, I did install it by myself back in May 2020.  My transaction history is blank, likely because I purchased it from Amazon.  In CAMPS, the product listed is "QuickBooks Desktop Standard Annual Subscription Pro
Latest version available", but that is NOT what I originally purchased.  However, the license number listed matches the one I got back in 2020 when I did purchase (from Amazon).  The email I received from Intuit in May of this year (2022) looks like I was "forced" into a subscription by Intuit without me taking any action on my own, essentially converting my license.  Attached is that email

As much as I would like to help you here in the Community, however, it is a public forum. Your concern may need some confidential information to fix the issue. And part of Intuit’s full service, it protects all confidential data to ensure security and privacy. Due to this, we're unable to provide this information with you.

I'd suggest contacting our Desktop support team, they have the tools to pull up your account and guide you further through this process. You can also request a screen-sharing session so they can look over your account and figure out what's wrong. I'll show you how.
 

  1. Click Help at the top menu bar, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact us and then enter that you get Reminder prompts and Continue.
  3. Then choose either to Message an Agent or Talk to a Specialist.

Frankly, you are in a difficult situation. Unless you can give them the receipt from Amazon, they will use your data in CAMPS as their solid reference. Last resort, you can still purchase the one time license for QBD 2021 if required.

Your receipts for past orders are all saved in Amazon. You can easily get your receipt.

I have a similar situation. My husband purchased Quick Books Pro and recorded all our financial information. He never used the online services offered and backed up everything on an auxiliary hard drive.  He has since passed away and I have been using Quickbooks only  to manually record my checking account.  I have since been locked out and can not even refer to last years entries without renewing a subscription for $539/yr.  This is like ransomware.  Is it possible to downgrade from Quickbooks Pro to a cheaper version?

My heartfelt condolences for your loss, @sherrymckean. I'm here to share with you some insights on how you can recover your account and access your past entries.

 

We can only upgrade QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Pro to a newer or higher version. Downgrading it is currently unavailable. Since you're locked out of your company file, you can try resetting your credentials by following these steps:

 

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop. From the login window, select I forgot my password.
  2. Fill out the info on the form.
    • Your license number for QuickBooks Desktop. (Hold down F2 on your keyboard from the login window to see your license number).
    • Enter the name, email address, phone number, and ZIP code you used when you purchased the product. Note: You can find all this info when you sign in to your Customer Account Management Portal (CAMPS). If you have trouble with the sign-in, you can reset your CAMPS password.
  3. Select OK. If your info is correct, you’ll get a code to the primary email in your CAMPS. Emails from us can show up in your spam folders. Check your spam and junk folders if you don't see your code in your inbox.
  4. QuickBooks will then guide you through creating a new admin password.

Which QB Desktop year version did you use? 2021 or 2022? 

You can use the trial version to open your file for 30 days and weigh your options later.

 

If you are working solo on a desktop (PC or Mac) to manage your book and only need basic features, you should explore a free program. You can use the program for as long as you like, use all the features and enter as much data as required. There are no time limits, no usage limits, no ads (at this time). This program is quite popular in Asia and Europe.

This happened to me but they charged me $750.00 for a new license. I purchased a the software with NO annual subscription.!! I called to get a refund which they did but now locked me out of my QB 2020.

This is a CLASS ACTION LAW CASE...

We suggest contacting our Customer Care Team so they can further check your account about the charges you received. They also have tools like screen sharing so they'll be able view your account in a secure environment.

 

Here's how you can reach them:

 

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to the Help menu at the top.
  3. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  4. Type Contact Us in the search box. Then, click on Contact Us at the bottom.
  5. Select the way you wish to connect with support.

Intuit is clearly evolving their business model and trying to move as many customers to their online platform as possible, while charging an exponentially increasing premium to remain on the desktop version.  That basically eliminates me as a customer (and I suspect many small businesses)  because I don't like the online version and the desktop price point is WAY too high for what I use it for.  The change in model is their decision, and it remains to be seen if it works.  My biggest issue with this change is how they have been implementing it, which is what you have touched on -- it was VERY shady, in my opinion, in how I was converted from a perpetual license to a subscription one.  I assume their legal team made sure that something, somewhere told me I was being converted, but for a person not watching closely, I felt like I was totally manipulated and taken advantage of...it felt very sneaky.  I provided my "feedback" in this (original) post, and gave them time to respond / react appropriately...I too believe that there are thousands like me/us that HAVE to be extremely annoyed.  They have either (a) not gotten as much negative feedback as I would have thought or (b)  not been listening.  Either way, it's not a company I want to do business with any longer -- I evaluated about 10 alternatives and ultimately migrated 14 years of data to Zoho Books (I'm VERY happy with it).  I had considered a class action suit myself, but ultimately chose not to.  With that said, if you do move forward, I wouldn't mind being kept up to date.

Do you still have QB Desktop 2020 running on your machine? As I recall, QB Desktop 2020 is a non subscription product. Login to your CAMPS and check your license status to make sure. It would be another issue if you have installed a newer version to open your file. Contact me in private and we can help to secure your company file.
