Can't Update File-Lost Connection To It

I received a backup copy of my client's QB file.  When I attempt to open the resultant QBW file in QB2019 I get this error message:  It looks like something went wrong.  We can't updated your company file because we lost connection to it.

I went through the recommended solutions.  Still no joy.

The file was on an external hard drive on my clients workstation.  It was never a network installation.  My computer is, likewise, a local installation of QB and the file.

My client cannot open the file on her computer either.  She has two companies sharing the same QB version.

Is it possible that she disconnected her external drive incorrectly and that may have corrupted the file.  I have shared files with her in past years with no problems.

Thank you for your help.

Can't Update File-Lost Connection To It

Hi, BigBillFL.

Looks like you're right on track for the cause of the problem. Sometimes disconnecting a drive before the file is fully saved unto the external drive can cause the file to become corrupted. Your client saves her file onto the drive, I recommend copying over the file onto your computer. You can always view our article on moving QuickBooks Company files here. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Thank you for your reply.

The problem isn't moving the file, it is opening the file.  My client cannot open the file on her computer and I cannot open the file on my computer.

I tried repairing the file using file doctor.  That did not work.  I tried renaming the file.  That did not work.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you.

Can't Update File-Lost Connection To It

I can share another set of troubleshooting steps that can fix this issue, BigBillFL.

Incorrect folder permissions, firewall configuration, or internet settings in Windows may cause errors when opening company files in Windows. Before diving into the process, we'll have to make sure that your QuickBooks is updated to the latest release. Once done, we'll have to run QuickBooks as administrator:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Right-click the QuickBooks icon and choose Run As Administrator.
  3. Try to open the company file again.

If the same thing happens, we can toggle the UAC setting to refresh the connection:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo and type User Account Control.
  3. Go to Settings, then choose Change User Account Control Settings.
  4. Make note of the current level and then move the slider to the highest setting, Always notify.

We'll also have to ensure that the file is not set as Read Only. You can follow the steps below in checking it:

  1. Locate the file.
  2. Right-click the company (.QBW) file.
  3. On the General tab, ensure that Read Only is not checked.
  4. If it is checked, clear the checkbox and select OK.
  5. Try opening the file again.

You can refer to this link to learn more about this process: Connection to QuickBooks company file is lost.

I also encourage performing the troubleshooting steps listed in this article, as I want to ensure that you can successfully open your company file: Error message: Connection Has Been Lost.

Should you have further questions or any other concerns about QuickBooks, you can always find me here. Stay safe and healthy.

Can't Update File-Lost Connection To It

I unchecked the read only box.  The file will still not open when I double click on it.  I received Error Code 80070057.  This should only occur in rare situations.  Such errors can sometimes be solved by...

I am thinking the file may be beyond recovery.

Thank you for your help.

Try contact Intuit Data Service to fix it. Otherwise, consider purchasing a 3rd party file recovery service.
