Change Filename from Mustang to Martin

Quickbooks Forum 261124 Change Filename from Mustang to Martin

Dear Fellow Quickbooks users

I am using an old version of Quickbooks, only for some rental properties, and a very small business I have. I don't  do anything online.  No need.  Up til about 5 years ago, I kept books on Quickbooks for a rental property I owned, Mustang. I sold the property but kept the quickbooks file on my hard drive.. Recently I began renting out another property, Martin.

So I resurrected the Mustang file and renamed the company to Martin and began recording transactions. But now I find that when I try to log in, the company file is still named "5033 Mustang Way QBW". What's more, I can't find the Mustang file on my hard drive to rename it.

I need some help to find the file and rename it so I can find it when I log in to Quickbooks.

Change Filename from Mustang to Martin

Thanks for sharing detailed information about being unable to locate the Mustang company file on your hard drive, @coppens1. We'll ensure that you can find and change its name to Martin after this.

The reason you're unable to locate the company file in your hard drive, it has many existing root files. If it wasn't deleted, you can easily locate the file by connecting the hard drive to your computer.

Feel free to follow the steps below:

  1. Connect your hard drive to your computer and open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Enter File Explorer from the search bar and click it to open.
  3. Select your hard drive from the navigation bar.
  4. Type *.qbw, *.qbb to locate all files. Ensure to include the asterisk (*) before the extension. You can also search for *.qb for QuickBooks.

Moreover, detailed information is available in this article: Find QuickBooks company data files and backups.

Wishing to ensure that your old company file can be opened to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Feel free to read this article: Update your company files to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

It's a great opportunity to chit-chat with you about locating your old company file to change its name. Never hesitate to return once you find it and ask another question relating to your company file access. We'll be there to become your helping hand. Take care, and enjoy the rest of your day.

@coppens1

How did you rename your old file. If you were using a backup file to restore and create a new name, you should be able to find the old file via Windows Explorer.

Bryan_M and Chrea, Quickbooks Team 121224 Found Files

Dear Bryan M.
In the folder C:\Users\taterb, I found the following files using the old company name 5033 Mustang Way:

5033 Mustang Way.QBW.SearchIndex  file folder
5033 Mustang Way Quickbooks Company File
5033 Mustang Way.QBW DSN File
5033 Mustang Way.QBW.ND ndFile
5033 Mustang Way.QBW TLGFile

The new company name is 606 Martin Ave.  Do I simply change the Quickbooks Company File and 3 file names to the 606 etc. ?
----------------------------
Dear Chrea, I simply changed the company name from 5033 Mustang Way to 606 Martin Ave onscreen within the file that was 5033.  But it did not change the filename.

Following my colleague's response, @coppens1, yes, you can change your QuickBooks company file name to the new one (606 Martin Ave). I can guide you through the process.

First, make sure to create a backup copy of your company file. Then, take note of the file location where your company file is stored. Follow the steps below to complete the process:

  1. In QuickBooks, check the location of the company file.

    • While on the Home page, press F2 or Ctrl+1 to open the Product Information window.
    • Note the location listed in the File Information field.

  2. Go to the location specified.

    • Right-click the Windows Start button and select File Explorer.

  3. Right-click the file and select Rename. The file name may appear as [CompanyName].qbw or just [CompanyName].
  4. Change the file name and press Enter.
  5. Click Yes to confirm the action.

Afterward, you can set up QuickBooks Desktop to use the new company file name. Here's how:

  1. On your QuickBooks Desktop program, click the File menu.
  2. Select Open or restore an existing company.
  3. Click Open a company file, then hit Next.
  4. Select the newly renamed company file and click Open.
