Do i need to file a 1099 for myself as a sole proprietor?

Your clients would need to issue you a 1099 if they paid you over $600 by way of cash/checking.  If by credit card you would not receive by your client, but rather the merchant company.

Hope this helps.

Do i need to file a 1099 for myself as a sole proprietor?

Hello, @sshine2014.

Let me share some information about filing a 1099 form.

If you are a sole proprietor, you may be relieved to know that issuing a 1099 form to yourself is not necessary. A 1099 is typically used to report income paid to non-employees, such as freelancers or independent contractors, and is usually issued by businesses that have spent $600 or more to the non-employee during the tax year. This can help you better understand your tax obligations and ensure you comply with IRS regulations.

For future help, Kindly refer to this article for further guidelines and information in preparing your 1099 here in QBO: Create and file 1099s with QuickBooks Online.

If you have further questions about your 1099 form, comment below, and we'll respond as soon as possible.

@mirahatland  Provide W-9s to the people you intend to send 1099s too; this form will give you the information you need to properly prepare the 1099s.

You will also need to prepare a 1096 for each group of 1099s you are reporting, by type (MISC, NEC, et cetera).

Hi Mira, as you embark on your journey of sending out 1099s as a sole proprietor, remember that we're here to support you every step of the way.

If you want to file them using your QuickBooks account, please ensure that all necessary information, such as contractors' W-9s, is accurately entered in QuickBooks.

If you've already entered the W-9 information for your contractors, there's nothing else you need to fill out. Instead, you can directly file them in QuickBooks if they meet the threshold.

To start, choose the product you want to use for e-filing your 1099s with us:

However, if you're unable to enter the W-9 information for your contractor, you can invite them to add their own 1099 tax info.

Once you've selected the specific product, you can check from there the necessary steps to take. For additional details, you can check out this article to help you prepare 1099s for the upcoming tax season: Get answers to your 1099 questions.

If you ever need to print your 1099, check out this guide. It walks you through the steps, whether you e-filed or not: Print your 1099 and 1096 forms.

We're here to make sure that your journey through the 1099 filing process is as easy and stress-free as possible. If you have any questions or need a hand with anything, please don't hesitate to reach out. Your peace of mind is our priority, and we're always here to support you.
