Error after Upgrade

I received the attached error when backing up my Quickbooks today. I had just upgraded from 2016 to 2019 this afternoon. I'm not sure how to correct the problem as I have never encountered this before.

Error after Upgrade

Hey there, @PattyV.

Thanks for letting me know about the error you're getting and for providing a screenshot. I'm here to help make sure you're able to back up your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) company file.

The error 194 usually occurs when the system detects a problem with the company file data. To get this sorted out, let's run the QuickBooks file doctor tool to repair the company file.

Here's how:

1. Download the QuickBooks File Doctor, then double-click qbfd.exe and follow the on-screen instructions to install.
2. The tool will open automatically. Use the drop-down list to find your company file.
3. Choose one of the following options:

  • Both file damage and network connectivity: If you suspect your company file is damaged.
  • Network connectivity only: If you are using QuickBooks in a multi-user setup.

4. Enter the Admin password when prompted, then Next.
5. You'll be prompted to select Host/Server or Workstation. It is important to make sure you pick the right option.
6. Wait until the File Doctor finishes diagnosing.

Once done, close the tool and reopen your company file and try to create a backup again to double-check. For additional information, check out these articles for further guidance:

That should get you fixed right up. Please comment below to let me know how it goes or if I can be of additional assistance. I'll be here to help. Have a good one.

Unfortunately, the instructions you gave me did not fix the issue. Does it matter that the backup of my company file was on a USB flash drive?

I already worked with QB customer support on the phone today. My bank account numbers had gotten corrupted during the upgrade from 2016 to 2019. He had to deactivate the bank account and then reactivate and it fixed the problem. Unfortunately, whenever I do an upgrade, which is forced upon me every 3 years due to the fact that I use Intuit online payments, there is a glitch. It's not fun and, in fact, very disruptive. I am, however, relieved it only took 1 hour to resolve.

Thank you for reaching out.

I have the same issue (upgrade from QB Desktop Pro 2016 to new version QB Desktop Pro 2019; Did they have to re-create account as new (setup) in order to reactivate bank feeds to resolve/repair error message? I have error message 194  for invalid bank account number.

Thank you for your post and response.

Thanks for joining this thread, BugRunners.

Upgrading QuickBooks to the latest version will reset the online banking feeds.

You need to deactivate and reactivate it to refresh the connection between these two programs. Before making any changes, I recommend backing up your QuickBooks file. This is to prevent the data from accidental loss.

Here's how to deactivate the account:

  1. Go to the Lists menu, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Right-click the account you want to deactivate, then select Edit Account.
  3. Go to the Bank Settings tab, then select Deactivate all online services.
  4. Click OK to confirm.
  5. Select Save & Close to close the Edit Account window.
  6. Close and re-open QuickBooks for changes to take effect.

After that, you can re-connect it. Here's how:

  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 above.
  2. Click Set Up Bank Feeds on the Edit Account window.
  3. Enter and select the name of your bank.
  4. Connect your bank depending on the methods available from them:
*Direct Connect: You need to apply for online services through your bank.
           a. If you want to enroll, select the enrollment site link.
           b. When your bank approves your application, contact them for your login credentials. If it’s enrolled already, select Continue.
           c. Then, enter your Online Banking ID and Password.
           d. Click Connect. QuickBooks connects to the bank’s server.
           e. Select the bank account you want to connect to QuickBooks.
           f. Click Finish after the process completes.
        * Web Connect: Follow the onscreen instructions on how to connect your account.
  5. On the Link your Accounts page, select the Select existing or Create new ▼ drop-down.
  6. Find the account you want to link
  7. Select Connect, then Close.

You can then start downloading transactions from your bank.

MaryLandT.

Please note: I have two company files I wish to upgrade to the newer version software.

I have upgraded an older version of QB Desktop Pro 2016 to the newer version of QB Desktop Pro 2020; How do I bring my second company file into this new version upgrade without over-writing the first upgraded company file. I'm not sure if I have to close company first thereby have no company file open before proceeding to restore the "company file" first, then, move onto the next step and restore most recent "backup company file" for this (same) company. I don't want to create new company; I want to restore and upgrade this second company file to the new version software as with the first.

p.s. Your previous post with attaching screenshots and the step by step instruction was perfect!

Thank you!

You need to purchase a 3rd party file merging service.

I have upgraded my QB from 2017 to 2020.  I have followed all the instructions and still QB crashes if I try to deactivate online services.   I have used the File Dr to no avail.  I have reinstalled QB, run validate and repair, researched and tried every fix for Error 194 the unrecoverable error.  What next?  This has never happened to me in the many previous versions of QB.

We know things can break sometimes but I'm here to help, @Laura J 12.

Since you're still getting the same error after performing all of the basic troubleshooting steps provided above, I recommend running the QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Tool Hub. This tool can help you fix many common issues and errors with QuickBooks.

Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the latest version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Then, save the file somewhere you can easily find it. If you've already installed this tool, you can select the Home tab and click About to view its version.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.
  6. Select the Program Problems tab if you notice performance issues, problems opening the program.

If you're still getting the same error, it would be best to reach out to our contact support. This way, they can use their advanced tools to determine the cause of the issue and fix it. Here's how you can reach out to them:

  1. Go to the Help icon and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact Us.
  3. Give a brief description of your issue, then select Continue.
  4. We’ll provide you a few support options. Select which one is best for you.

Let me know how it goes in the comment section. If you need additional assistance in doing your task with QBDt, don't hesitate to visit us back. We'll be happy to help.

Welcome to the Community, Dbroschka.

I took a look at the original post in this thread to verify what error you're experiencing. PattyV included a PDF file showing the code they received. It was titled Error 194 and had something to do with Lists according to their results from running a rebuild. In another post, the same Community member responded to a colleague of mine advising they were able to fix this problem by deactivating their bank account, then reactivating it.

I've also done some research through our ongoing and solved investigations. Currently, there's no information about this specific message.

If you've already tried what worked for the original poster and the recommended troubleshooting provided by my colleagues, but are still experiencing the same result, I'd recommend contacting support so a representative who can access your account can make a report of this issue.

Here's a couple helpful resources which may come in handy:
