Hello,
I have been using Quickbooks Online Payroll since we were forced to convert from Intuit Online Payroll earlier this year. We use Quickbooks Desktop for the rest of our bookkeeping.
I have set up QBO Payroll as directed in this article to be able to export to QBD, and every month I export the payroll transactions into Quickbooks Desktop as described in this article.
However, I'm unable to export the local wage tax transactions, which I manually enter as a "prior tax payment" as described in this article.
Is this a bug or an intentional loss of functionality? Without the ability to export the local wage tax transactions from QBO Payroll this forces extra work on our bookkeeper and increases the likelihood of human error and the likelihood of issues in reconciliation, so if it is user error I really would like to figure out what I'm doing wrong, if it's a bug I'd like to report it, and if it's intended functionality I'd like to be directed to where I can put a request in for a feature improvement to regain that ability. Thank you all for any light you can shed!
I know it's important to move your local wage tax transactions to QuickBooks Desktop, MaireMoriarty. I'm here to shed some light on this matter.
Currently, the option to export the tax payments from QuickBooks Online to the desktop version is unavailable. You'll have to manually record the prior tax payments in the program to ensure that your books are accurate and up-to-date.
For now, I'd recommend sending a feature request directly to our Product Development team. This helps us improve your experience with the program.
Here's how:
For your visual reference, I've attached a screenshot below.
Also, you can track feature requests through the Customer Feedback for QuickBooks Online website.
Additionally, I've included an article that'll help you view useful information about your business and employees: Run and Customize Payroll Reports.
I'm only a few clicks away if you need assistance with your other QuickBooks tasks, MaireMoriarty. It's always my pleasure to help you out again.
Thank you for your response!
So, to be clear, unlike in Intuit Online Payroll, QBO Payroll can not export manually recorded wage tax payments, right? So every month, when I pay my city's local wage tax, I now have to manually record this in QBO and QBD separately?
I admit I am bummed as I was not expecting this loss of functionality and increased manual labor for my business practices when being moved, but I am also relieved that someone was able to answer definitively whether this was user error, a bug, or a loss of functionality.
Hi Charlene,
I just realized the article you linked me to is about Quickbooks Desktop Payroll. I have never used Quickbooks Desktop Payroll. I was switched from Intuit Online Payroll to Quickbooks Online Payroll.
In this case, it is of no consequence as I already know how to manually record these payments in QBD. But I want you and others reading this to know that the steps will not be accurate for others in my situation.
It appears the rest of your answer is still applicable, but please let me know if that is the case or if this clarification changes your understanding about my situation and the proper response.
Hello there, @MaireMoriarty.
Yes, the answers and workaround that @CharleneMae_F has provided are all applicable.
Since the option to export the tax payments from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop is unavailable. Therefore, you'll have to manually enter any historical tax payments in QBDT Payroll.
Also, you can send feedback to us for a feature request to be sent to our Product Development team.
Feel free to add a comment below if you have other concerns about this matter or with QuickBooks. We're always here to help. Have a great day!
Hi Charlene,
Just to clarify, I do not use and never have used QBDT Payroll. Therefore, the workaround linked is not relevant to me or others in the community coming to this post in my position after having been moved from Intuit Online Payroll to Quickbooks Online Payroll. The local tax payments are recorded as a check, the same way the tax payments the QBO Payroll service does export are recorded.
As I expect there are a number of others who are experiencing this loss of functionality, I want to be sure anyone coming to this post is not made more confused. I have submitted the feature request, though "feature reinstatement" might be a more apt term.
