I'm filing a corrected 1099-NEC after e-filing. The IRS sent me paper forms. Does QB have a template I can use to print onto these forms? If not, can you recommend how?

I'm looking for a template in word or excel that will enable me to enter the information for the corrected 1099-NEC and print directly onto the IRS paper forms so everything lines up properly. Does Quickbooks have such a template. If not, can you recommend somewhere else where I can do this? I am only trying to file one corrected 1099. Thanks!

Currently, we don't have a template that you can use for the corrected 1099-NEC. 

 

You can run a report to see the updated information of the corrected 1099-NEC instead.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Go to Reports.
  2. Locate and select the 1099 Transaction Detail Report.
  3. Choose the desired details to show in the report.
  4. Click Run report.

Sorry, I'm confused! You said below "You can run a report to see the updated information of the corrected 1099-NEC instead." Do you mean that this will line up the information instead of a template? When I ran a report as you outlined, it does not line up the information in a way that it can be printed directly onto the IRS form. It just shows a transaction report like any other transaction report in QB. I already have the information. I just need to be able to print it onto the IRS form.

 

I was told on another thread that I cannot correct an e-filed 1099 electronically. I was told I can only do so by ordering the forms from the IRS, printing with the updated information and mailing to the IRS. But how do I do this? I need to be able to line up the information so that it prints correctly on the form. If Quickbooks doesn't provide a template, can you refer me to a resource that will allow me to put the information into word or excel so that it will line up correctly on the form?

To get the 1099 NEC correct, we'll need to manually enter the exact information into the form that you received and mail it to IRS. You can follow the steps provided by my colleague Ethel_A to view a report to correctly map 1099.

Thanks for your response. The question I still have is how do I manually map the information from the 1099 transaction report so that it appears print-ready for the IRS 1099 form?

 

Would I go to Payroll/Contractors and then go through the process to "Prepapre 1099s" as if I am preparing to file the 1099s again but instead of e-filing select the print option (even if I didn't buy the 1099 kit from intuit)? 

 

Or is there a better way for me to manually map the information so it is print ready for the IRS form?

Allow me to share additional details about correcting the 1099 in QuickBooks Online (QBO). 

 

There's no need for you to go to the Payroll tab to prepare for 1099. Since all corrected 1099 must be filed manually and send it by mail to the IRS. For more guidance, you can use these IRS instructions and see correct or change 1099s in QuickBooks

 

If you're not sure, I'd also suggest consulting your accountant. They will give you advice on how to properly map your account.

Hello, I wanted to let you and the community know that I called the IRS and I was told that in the case of a 1099-NEC recipient address change, you do NOT need to send a corrected paper 1099 form to the IRS. The instances when a corrected 1099 is necessary is outlined in the IRS "General Instructions for Certain Information Returns" on page 12. A corrected 1099 is needed in certain instances such as when there is an incorrect SSN or amount, but not when the recipient's address has changed. I wanted to let you know this because the information that Quickbooks support provided me is not correct. Hopefully, this will benefit other people who have the same question.

I'm in the same predicament -- I need to file a corrected 1099. Unfortunately, I have to correct a TIN. I bought 1099 forms from Office Depot, but the forms don't provide a template. Intuit's responses to your inquiry were lame.

If you need to make changes to your 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC forms after you e-filed them, you must contact the IRS directly to make a manual amendment to your 1099 forms. To do so, follow the instructions provided by the IRS. Then, you will have to provide the corrected return to the recipient or contractor yourself once it has been corrected. Thanks for your message. Is this response directed to me as my name isn't diah! As I indicated in another message, I contacted the IRS and they explained that I do not need to file a corrected 1099-NEC if there is only a change in the recipient's address. QB is not providing accurate information in this regard so I'd much appreciate of you could share with other agents.

Let me provide some information about filing a corrected 1099-NEC form, marc34.

 

We usually respond to questions raised on this thread for different customers. That's why responses are directed to different names.  Also, I can see the importance of providing accurate information especially when e-filing corrected forms. Some of the errors that require an amended 1099 consist of the following:

 

  • If you used the wrong type of return form (e.g., a Form 1099-MISC when you should have used Form 1099-NEC)
  • If you entered incorrect money amounts or codes
  • If you've marked the wrong checkbox
  • If you've already filed a return when you shouldn’t have
  • When you made a mistake with the payee’s taxpayer identification number (TIN) or name

 

When making manual amendments to your 1099 forms, you'll have to work directly with the IRS.  To change the 1099-NEC recipient's address, you can follow the steps below:

 

  1. Go to the Payroll menu, then select Contractors.
  2. Click Prepare 1099s and select Let’s get started.
  3. Review that the company name, address, and tax ID are correct and match the letters from the IRS. You can click the pencil icon if you want to make changes to the information.
  4. Click Save.

The IRS website has a fillable 1099 form for both the NEC and the MISC forms.  Just go to the IRS.gov website and enter the corrected information on the 1099 form there and then print the new 1099.  I'm not sure how they want you to submit it though.  That's what I did for the one 1099-MISC form that I had to do.  Then I submitted it electronically through the IRIS file system along with the 1099-NEC forms that I had to submit. Everything printed perfectly on the website form.   Hope this helps.

Thanks, I called the IRS last year and they told me that I don't need to submit an amended 1099-NEC if it is only an address change. I'm not sure how it works with the fillable 1099 forms, but thankfully it wasn't necessary.

This really helps. I need to correct the Name on one of my contractor 1099-NEC already e-filed with QBO. Can you post the link for the forms. I've been trying to find it in the IRS website but no luck.

I understand the importance of having accurate information on forms, especially something as critical as the 1099-NEC for your contractor. It’s crucial to get these corrections made promptly, and I'm here to help you navigate this process.

 

To begin with, please know that the 1099 corrections will be available in mid-February 2025.

 

If you'd like to correct your contractor's name, please follow the steps below:

 

  1. Navigate to the 1099 filings tab.
    • For QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Online Payroll: Click on Taxes, then select 1099 filings.
    • For QuickBooks Contractor Payments: Simply go to the 1099 filings section.
  2. Click on Correct next to the form you wish to update.  
    • Note: Your business information must match exactly with what was originally submitted to the IRS. If there have been any changes since your filing, revert them back.
  3. The accounts and boxes you previously selected will appear; these show the payments or expenses made to your contractors along with the corresponding 1099 box. To remove an account, click Remove next to that row. If you need to add or change an account, click Select Accounts.
    • If you mistakenly filed for a contractor, remove all the accounts listed and move on to Step 5.
  4. If you need to change the 1099 box, click the dropdown ▼ next to the account and choose either the 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC box that corresponds to the type of payments made to your contractors.
  5. Click Next.  
    • If you've made any changes to your accounts or 1099 boxes, you'll receive a message indicating that other 1099 forms may also be impacted. Review your other contractors' 1099 forms and make any necessary corrections. Click Got it to proceed.
  6. Confirm that the Corrected total is what you expected.  
    • Note: If the contractor payment total falls below the 1099 threshold and they no longer require a 1099, the Corrected total will show as $0.00.
  7. Review your contractors' personal information and email addresses. Click Edit ✎ to make any adjustments, then select Next.

  8. Click Preview to check each corrected 1099, and select the E-file corrected form option twice.
    • Note: We will not email or mail copies of corrected 1099 forms to contractors; you will need to provide these copies yourself.
  9. Repeat these steps for each 1099 form you wish to correct.

 

Once done, you can now file your e-file the correction with the IRS:

 

  1. E-file the original form again:
    • The corrected checkbox is selected on the form. 
    • The form will include the original contractor info and TIN.
    • All boxes will be zero dollars ($0).
  2. E-file a new form with the correct info.
