iCloud synchronization file” format

Hello-

I went to open my compny in quickbooks and got this error:

The document “[my company's file name]” could not be opened. QuickBooks cannot open files in the “iCloud synchronization file” format.

Does anyone know what has happened how to retrieve my file?

Hi there, @mtwelty.

Let's rename or move your company file to a different folder to resolve this. Let me guide you how.

To rename your company file:

  1. Open the New Finder window and browse to where your file is located.
  2. Select your company file.
  3. Go to the File menu, then choose Rename.
  4. Enter a new name and click OK.

Then to move your company file:

  1. Open the New Finder window and browse for your company file.
  2. Copy the QuickBooks company file.
    1. Select the file.
    2. Go to Edit, then select Copy.
  3. Paste the file to another folder.
    1. Select the file.
    2. Go to Edit, then select Paste.
  4. Open the file in QuickBooks Mac.
    1. Open QuickBooks, then click Browse.
    2. Navigate to the new location of the file.
    3. Select the company file and choose Open.
  5. Delete the file from the original location.
    1. Open the New Finder window and browse to the original file location
    2. Drag the file to the Trash icon to delete it.

You cannot "run" company files that are located on icloud. You can use icloud to save backups and download a backup to hard drive to restore from but your company file should always reside on the same hard drive as the software program running it

I had the same issue on Windows and caused me a lot of headaches and restoring my company files etc.

It was at a time when I moved to a new PC so it was difficult to pinpoint the issue.

At the end what I realized that the issue was with the iCloud windows 10 application.

QB is unable to open the company file if it is in iCloud folder via the iCloud for windows app that is installed via the Microsoft app store (current version 12.5). If you use the version of iCloud that is for Windows 7/8/10/11 (current version 7.21) then it is working perfectly on both windows 10 and 11.
