Good morning, @bill-heath.
Renaming a bank account is a breeze and I'll show you how below:

I followed this procedure to rename a bank account. However, transactions are now showing up in a (non-existent) account with the old name. If users are not careful, their transactions default to the "remembered" name. It appears there is no way to prevent posting to any GL account.
I have two transactions that came through payroll and am still looking for a way, other than journal entry, to correct them.
And looking for a way to prevent more data entry to the old name. Any suggestions?
Thanks for joining this thread, @VeeHog.
I appreciate you following the steps provided by my colleague above. Just to confirm, are the transactions you're referring to for payroll? If so, let's make sure the renamed or new account is selected on the Payroll Accounting Preferences.
Here's how:
1. Go to the Gear icon at the top.
2. Pick Payroll Settings under Your Company column.
3. On the Preferences section, click Accounting.
4. Select the Customize option at the bottom.
5. On the Bank Account section, choose the renamed or new account on the drop-down, then hit OK.
That should prevent your data entry from posting to the old name. I'm also including this article for additional information about the Payroll Accounting Preferences in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
Keep me posted on how it goes or if you need anything else. I'll be happy to help. Take care and enjoy the rest of the day.
I have this same issue. I renamed the account but now the payroll transactions are going to aa duplicated account with the old name. I went in and changed the Payroll Settings to the new changed name but is there any way to move the transactions that went through to that phantom account with the old name to the correct, re-named account?
