Good day, NEEL_SAPIENT.

You can use sub-total so you can apply a discount per line item. Here's how:

  1. Go to the List menu and select Item List.
  2. Press CTRL + N altogether in your keyboard.
  3. Select Subtotal for Type.
  4. Enter all other details.
  5. Click OK.

Then, create a discount item if you haven't set it up yet. Just press Ctrl + N again and select Discount

After putting all items in the invoice, add the subtotal first before the discount. The, add more items you need in the transaction.

You'll also want to take a look at this article in case you want to customize your sales forms in QuicBooks: Use And Customize Form Templates.

CAn you ellaborate on this.  I don't understand where you are findin ITEM List on the LIST menu.  where is this?  I would like to apply a discount to an order but then also have products in that order that receive a different discount.

thanks

Hi there, mfsexton.

Thanks for joining this thread. Allow me to chime in and help you add a discount to your order in QuickBooks.

The steps shared by my colleague above are intended for QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). You may be using the online version (QBO), that's why you're unable to follow those steps.

If this is the case, the process to add a discount in QBO is different. How you set up and apply discounts will vary depending on which experience of invoices you have.

If you're using the new layout, here's how:

  1. In QBO, go to the + New option at the upper left.
  2. Select Invoice.
  3. To add a discount to the invoice, click the ⚙ Manage.
  4. Tick Invoice settings, then Totals.
  5. Turn on the Discount setting to add the discount field.
  6. Fill out your invoice.
  7. For the discount, choose for a flat discount or % for a percentage discount.
  8. Hit Save.

If you're using the old layout, please refer to this article and and proceed to the Set up and add discounts with the old layout section for the detailed steps on how to do it: Add a discount to an invoice or sales receipt in QuickBooks Online. It also contains the steps on how to add a discount per line item.

Once you're ready to receive the invoice payments, you can check out this article for future reference: Record invoice payments in QuickBooks Online.

Please let me know if you have follow-up questions about this or anything else. I'll be more than willing to help. Take care.

thank you for your response but that does not answer my question.   If you read the thread it refers to line item discount and not discount at the end of the invoice.  In the meantime, I have read multiple threads on this topic and it appears it is a feature that Quickbooks is lacking. This is a basic invoicing feature that Quickbooks does not have but should have.

When you add the feature, let me know.

I recognize the importance of the line item discount feature, and I can see how this feature is beneficial for you and other businesses. I recommend letting our Developers be notified of your idea by leaving feedback. They might consider your idea for future product enhancements when developing upcoming product changes. Please refer to the steps below:

  1. Click the Gear icon and choose Feedback

You can track feature requests through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website. I've included a link with tools to help you complete your tasks on time and resources to walk you through the steps of each accounting process: Self-help articles.

Fill me in if you have additional questions about the discount function and other QuickBooks concerns. I'd be delighted to respond to them. Enjoy your weekend.

Basically the only option that QBO customers have to utilize line item discounts is to go take a look into Xero.
