Hey there, @TAJ60. Thanks for reaching out to the Community.

I'm happy to help you get back to business. Try following my colleague GlinetteC's troubleshooting steps and see if you can determine which employee is causing QuickBooks to freeze. Once that is determined, you will need to create a new employee and merge it with the damaged employee by following these steps. Make sure you backup your file before proceeding.:

  1. Take note or copy the name of the employee that you would like to keep.
  2. Right-click the name of the employee that you would like to merge, then select Edit Employee.
  3. Replace the employee's name with the one you took note of or copied, then select OK.
  4. A prompt will appear, select Yes to proceed with the merge.

That's it! The Community will always have your back. Wishing you and your business continued success in all that you do.

QB consistant crashing/freezing

Hello there, @MadChad.

If your QuickBooks keeps freezing when selecting employees in the Employee Center, this is an issue our engineers are currently working on. I recommend giving our Customer Care Team a call to add your account to the list of affected users.

Please have our representative link your case number to INV-24741. You’ll be notified through email once an update is received.

Here’s how to contact our phone agents:

  1. Go to the Help menu at the top and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click the Contact Us link at the bottom of the pop-up window.
  3. Enter a brief description of your concern and hit Continue.
  4. Select the support option that works for you.

In the meantime, you can export the employee list via IIF and re-import it back into QBDT to stop the freezing. Take a look at this article to serve as your guide: Export, import, and edit IIF files.

However, if this happens not only in the Employees Center, I recommend following the troubleshooting steps provided on these articles to fix the issue: While working in QuickBooks, QuickBooks closes unexpectedly (crashes with or without an error) and What to do if you can’t open QuickBooks Desktop.

I'm only a couple of clicks away if you need anything else. The Community is here to help. Have a good one!

I’m having the same issue. Mine freezes at the first employee. When I do a backup and open the entire file on a different computer it works just fine.

One of my Qbx companies freezes when I go to the Employee Center. It’s not just one employee, it’s any one. Eventually Qbx works again but it’s a big big time-waster.

Hello,

I was having the same issue where quickbooks would take forever to load/ crash when I selected certain employees. After exporting the employee file and re-importing it, the problem has gone away! It's been 3 weeks now with no issues.

Thanks for the fix!

OH MY...I was having the same problems with QB 2019 freezing up and asking me to update the software which it would not do because the computer (running windows 10) was not able to update to the newest version,  I had MS support working on it and QB support working on it as well.  I had to call at least every 2 weeks for some issue or another, finally the end of December I had a Hard Drive Failure, I believe it was due to both Windows 10 and QB 2019 incompatibility.  The computer was only 10 months old.  It was under warranty and after several weeks of trying to reinstall new HD and reformat the Operating System, HP decided it was a faulty computer and they replaced it.

Long story short, I have a new computer and QB 2019 is updated to newest version, Windows 10 running and updated to newest update and here we go again.  QB program freezing up every so often.  Not running as smooth as i am used to.  Seems like the 2019 software has a lot of issues and bugs to work through.  It's not just one instance either.  When i go to print a report, it freezes up.  If i go into sending payroll stubs for direct deposit, freeze up.  Hope they can rectify this issue

Hello, @netofpa.

There are lots of possible reasons why QuickBooks constantly crashes/freezes. Here are some of them:

  • The company name is too long.
  • Damaged or missing QBWUSER.INI file.
  • Corruption on your hard drive.
  • Damaged program files or QuickBooks Desktop installation.
  • Damage Windows operating system.

To resolve the issue, let's start by running the Refresher tool to end QuickBooks processes running in the background.

  1. Close QuickBooks, then download the Refresher tool.
  2. Save the file on your desktop.
  3. Run the QBRefresher tool.
  4. Re-open QuickBooks Desktop.

If the problem continues, I encourage following the additional steps outlined in this article: What to do if you can't open QuickBooks Desktop.

Just in case you need tips and related links in the future while working with QuickBooks, feel free to read out help articles.

Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with as I'm always here to help however I can. Have a good day!

I'd like to thank everyone for their directions to fix this.  Have done some of them, but reading thru the many posts, I didn't try them all.

Just did the Clean install after other attempts.  Lasted all of 2 days and then same ole thing.

Had my tech guy go thru the computer to make sure I didn't have any corrupted files anywhere that would affect QB's.  Didn't have any.

Unfortunately, the computer is just old enough that I am not able to update to Windows 10, so QB's won't let me update to 2020.  Believe me, we've tried numerous times.  So I will have to wait for my boss to fork out some $$'s to upgrade to a new computer and hopefully that will take care of the problem.

I hope everyone else was a bit more lucky getting their problem resolved.

I have same problem, just started. Called tech support. In one company , QB freezes at the click of employee name. Second company have a step further , where it freezes when I click "notes" for employee. Tech support took screen shots for both company info for software engineers. And provided a case  # [removed].

The company with "note problem is there since 09/2019. That time called in, but no fix after running so many built, clean install and lot of other things. Hope they can figure it out soon

I have had 2019 for quite a while and suddenly whenever i try to print the checking register, the program freezes, makes the "ding" sound when i click anywhere in the program, like there's a  hidden open window - in fact the "register date" pop up window remains hidden and i have to go to Task Manager to close the program and restart. I have multiple companies in QB and it is doing this for all but 1 of them.

Good Afternoon, @FranPG.

Let's try a basic troubleshooting step to help get you back to running your business. We're going to download and use the QuickBooks Tool Hub. The hub is a platform for the tools that'll be useful when fixing your issue. Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download and save the QuickBooks Tool Hub file.
  3. Open the file after it's downloaded.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to install and agree to terms and conditions.
  5. Double-click the icon to open the tool hub after the install finishes.

Afterward, look into this article to see which tool will be best to use for your issue.

Touch base with me after trying these steps. I want to make sure that we get this resolved for you. I'll be waiting for your response.

I spent an hour and half on the phone with tech support and they tried all the hub tools, nothing worked. I now have three customers with the same issue and phone support has not been able to fix any of them. One of the is migrating to Sage 50 next week because of the issue.

Thank you for your reply... but OF COURSE we've done all of the basic trouble shooting at this point.

It's our feeling that Intuit is purposely "breaking" the desktop version in order to force people onto the inferior online version.   Evidently this behavior is a "known" issue to your engineering team.   And yet, it's not fixed.   We've started seeing the same behavior in much smaller company files in Premier... so it's no longer just an Enterprise issue.

Because of this issue, we're actively looking at alternative software providers since Intuit doesn't seem to care or want to fix the issue.  This is a programmatic issue, not a data issue.

What does this do to the transaction data?  Will I lose paychecks that have been created or will the import just overnight the existing employee information?

Hello, @Josh Schooley

Thank you for following up on this thread.

Before going into detail, I want to ask if you want to export your data to another software?

For additional information with importing and exporting data, please refer to this article: Import and export data in QuickBooks Desktop

I look forward to chatting with you soon. Have a safe and productive rest of your day!

I have an update to this, which hopefully will help your developers as well as other users that are also having this issue.

For our company, we have a couple of custom fields on the "Additional Info" tab.  There was once field that allowed the data entry person to input more than 32 characters, even though that field is limited to 32 characters.  I believe QuickBooks allowed it through the copy/paste process versus manually typing the data into the field.

I exported the employee list, shortened the data in that field, and re-imported the file.

Upon re-importing the IIF file, it failed on a a few employees who had spaces in their first or last names, (Example: an employee with the first name "Mary Ellen".  It seems that QuickBooks doesn't "like" names with spaces.

I went back to the originally exported IIF file where I had fixed the issue with the data length in that custom field, and removed the spaces from the last names of the employees that failed to import.

Upon importing the IIF file again, all records successfully imported.  I manually paged through all employees in the employee list, and could no longer duplicate the hang/freeze issue I was previously experiencing.

Hopefully you can relay this information to the developers so that they can do a better job at restricting the data length on fields that have an upper-bound.  As well as do something about how QuickBooks handles spaces in fields, like the name fields.

Other users having this issue:

  • Export your employee list to an IIF file.
  • Open it in Excel.
  • You should be prompted with a dialog asking how you want each column formatted.  I chose "text" for all columns because in our data we have custom fields with leading zeros, and I didn't want excel to try and "help" me by converting the data with leading zeros to scientific notation.
  • Once the file is opened, identify any weirdo data issues such as fields (other than the notes field) with long data; spaces in name fields, etc.
  • Once you have identified all possible data issues, click the "Save" button.  Then close the file.  Do not save again if asked.
  • Import your IIF file with the corrected data into QuickBooks.

That's it!  Hope it works for you, and I hope the Intuit developers are able to use info discovered by a user that they evidently have been "researching" for quite a while.

I, too, am having the same difficulty--Error Code 24741.  However, when I tried to export and import the employee file using your method, I get the following message:qb 1.jpgqb2.jpg

Thank you for joining the thread @churchladi8,

The reasons why you cannot import the file, it is because when you import existing employees' information. It will either duplicate or unable to import since the file already exists in your Quickbooks Desktop account.

However, you can contact our QuickBooks Support to assist you to update your employee's information. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. To route you to the correct support expert, type your concern.
  4. Hit Continue.
  5. Choose the Start messaging or Get a callback button.
  6. Fill up the information needed.
  7. Click Submit or Confirm my call.

In case you need help importing and exporting the IIF file you can visit this link: Export, import, and edit IIF files.

If you need further assistance, feel free to leave a message in the comment section. I'm always here to help. Have a great day!

" It is because when you import existing employees information, it will either duplicate or unable to import since the file already exists in your Quickbooks Desktop account."

I'm surprised you're an employee, because this statement is incorrect.  I've performed this procedure in QuickBooks desktop several times now without duplicates / failures.

What REALLY needs to happen is that Intuit developers need to write code to handle data that is formatted outside what is expect for that field and/or correct the field to limit data entry of certain characters or text.  This is a QuickBooks issue that needs to be corrected, instead of Intuit relying on it's users to export and edit data that QuickBooks doesn't "like".
