Quickbook Desktop 2022 Crashing and stops working

I keep books for several companies in my Desktop QB.

7 out of 10 times, when I switch companies the whole program closes.

Please address this problem, QB, and don't tell me to switch to online. I live in a rural area so internet is spotty.

I noticed this also.  Are they doing away with Payroll and forcing their payroll service?  I couldn't find anything on the Payroll subscription.  The only options are their payroll service.

This is extremely expensive for a software package.

As near as I can tell, they are not doing away with payroll, but increasing the monthly cost per employee fee. They are trying to get everyone to move to online. This from Intuit:   We are modifying our QuickBooks Desktop discount policy to encourage businesses to evaluate both QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop, determining which product is the right fit based on business need. Many small businesses are choosing QuickBooks Online over QuickBooks Desktop as they realize the flexibility and mobility benefits of being on a connected, online platform. And while we continue to support QuickBooks Desktop and the customers using these products, we are accelerating our investment into QuickBooks Online platform products.

The "enhancements" they talk about for Desktop only work if you bank at certain banks, have high end IT support at the company level to be able to use their app and generally are part of a business large and robust enough that you wouldn't be using Desktop anyway.  As has been noted in this thread, this is exactly the way Intuit intends it to be. The lack of a fix for Desktop crashing is intentional. As angry as it makes me, in part because it feels like gouging that disproportionately impacts smaller businesses, Intuit can do whatever they want.  As long as there is limited competition, they will continue to raise prices because they can. The best thing I can think of is to create threads within the Intuit community discussing the various other options that are out there so businesses can evaluate what works for them.

I agree - they are trying to cancel / move out of the desktop version, and force us to move into the online version.

I am working on finding different accounting option for my company.  I am looking into AccountEdge as an option.

It will be great if people can share what they are finding as an alterative.

Those of us in rural areas have all sorts of increased expenses that seem to make our "lower cost of living" not so low!  And this will be one of them - we are about to see another massive price increase for Desktop.  And if you add payroll we will be paying around two and half times more than we were a year ago for a product that doesn't really work and they have announced that they are putting resources into Online, not Desktop, so it's not going to get better, just more expensive.

I don't currently pay per employee. I pay a flat annual subscription and do my own payroll and tax preparation.  I am not seeing an option to continue with Desktop and this flat fee payroll subscription.

This is beyond frustrating because we are a small business in a rural community.   Internet is ok but not completely reliable.  I don't need to have multi-point access to my accounting.  I work at our business daily and have no need to 'take it everywhere i go'.

I have done some research and AccountingEdge is very close in capability to QB.   You are right they can do whatever they chose....and they chose to screw all these businesses.  They chose to tell you how to run your business.

There may be something in here that addresses your question.

I think for us running small businesses (maybe especially in rural areas) the behavior of companies like Intuit is particularly irritating because it is the antithesis of how we do things. Just because you can doesn't mean you should is how we do business. I guess I'm curious why Intuit continues to even offer Desktop.

Hi, @emilstew97.

Thanks for joining this conversation. Allow me to chime in and help ensure this is taken care of for you.

To ensure I'm on the same page, may I know which screen you referred to when you mentioned you couldn't find anything on the Payroll subscription? Can you provide a screenshot? Any additional information will help me provide the best resolution for your concern.

In case you need it, I'll add this article that tackles setting up and managing payroll in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT): Get started with QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon.

I am moving my clients to AccountingPower from AccountantsWorld.  It is not sophisticated software, but it does get the job done.

Check into AccountingPower or Patriot Software. Both are online, but with Patriot Software, they have a very reliable payroll component.

I am having similar issues with QB randomly shutting off. No errors. Mostly shuts off when signing in. Currently running R5 version and updates are current. issue has also started since upgrading to QB2022.

I also am having the problem of Quickbooks 2022 crashing when opening the program.  I have tried using the Tool Hub and reinstalling Quickbooks to no avail. This is the first time I have had such problems with Quickbooks and it is very frustrating.

Thanks for taking the time to follow along with the thread and sharing your concerns, @Weatherford Steel

I understand how frustrating it can be when QuickBooks isn't working as intended. Rest assured, I will be here every step to get you back to business.

Before we begin, I wanted to ask a few questions to get more clarification. When QuickBooks crashes, are you receiving any error messages? Do you make it to the sign-in screen, sign in, then it crashes? Or is it just when you try opening it?

Any extra details or screenshots that you can provide will be a great help to me in finding the right solution for you.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your reply. Chat with you soon. Take care!

I make it past the login screen and get to the home screen. Just as I think all is OK and the QB sales banner is starting to load it crashes and poof no more quickbooks. No error message, no nothing no change to take a screen shot. It just crashes and closes. This happens 9 times out of 10 and will happen 2 to 3 times in a row before I can work.

Thank you for your response.

When QuickBooks crashes it usually happens right after I sign in with no visible error messages.  I checked Windows event viewer which lists several errors in QuickBooks (Event ID 4 - Error).

Some of the event details:

  • An unexpected error has occured in "QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2022":
    V32.0D R5 (M=1066, L=335, C=249, V=0 (0))
  • An unexpected error has occured in "QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2022":
    DBConnPool::HandleConnectionError errorCode:-6069, dbCode:-103 from file:'src\connpool.cpp' at line 1043 from function:'DBMgr::DBConnPool::init'
  • An unexpected error has occured in "QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2022":
    Connection String:CON=QBConnectionPool-Probe-QB_ACPJUANITA_32;;DBF=C:\Users\Juanita\Documents\Quickbooks Files\Administrative Committee for Pistachios.QBW;CommLinks="ShMem,tcpip(IP=10.0.1.22;TO=5;DOBROADCAST=NONE;port=50141)";ServerName=QB_ACPJUANITA_32;DBN=6f14412c86594a7dbefabefadc1d03c9

Let me know if you want to see more.

Last week it happened 3 times in a row but I was able to log in successfully on the 4th try.  Yesterday QB crashed when I switched companies (I track two company files - one for payables and receivables only and the other has the payroll feature).  For the first time, yesterday QB crashed while I was doing a backup of the company file that has the payroll.  When I restarted QB hung so I had to end the task.  This morning QB crashed right after the home page appeared (restarted computer before starting QB).  I just restarted it - so far so good.

QB is running at the moment, but unpredictable as to what will happen the next time.

Has there been any resolution to this.  I was running Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2020 when it started and thought if I upgraded to 2022 the issue would go away.  But it is still happening.  The first time I log in it immediately crashes. Then when I log back in it typically stays running. Occasionally i have to sign in a third time.  Very frustrating.

The many BS answers from support are more frustrating then the issue itself, which is saying a lot. It's not a corrupt file, it's not something the Tool Hub repairs. It's the latest update, PERIOD. Nothing works for long. The only solution I have is to reopen the program 5-6 times until I get a stable instance. Sometimes just waiting before doing anything helps, but frankly, it's so intermittent that could be pure coincidence. If there was a reasonable alternative, I'd jump ship, but all the alternatives are cloud based and I absolutely do not want my business accounting in the cloud except for backups.

I log in and QuickBooks begins to open. Sometimes it opens and when I try to complete any function I get the message -"QuickBooks has stopped working", but most times I log in and as the program begins to open, I get th message - "QuickBooks has stopped working.

Will you guys give your customers an extended period for 2022 Pro Plus? I'm sure you're not going to force us to pay for 2023 when 2022 hasn't worked since May, and from what I've seen 2023 will carry over the same catastrophic problem we currently have in these INV-74349 you talk about.

Seriously?  It has taken four months for Intuit to even acknowledge there is a problem to fix?  I first discovered there was a problem in mid-May.

Not to change problems, but one of my QB Servers is running R5_101 and guess what?  The QBFCMonitorService now crashes on a regular basis.  I just have to laugh......Fortunately that is my least used instance and I just changed the service to automatic startup and put in 3 'restart the service' recovery actions.  We'll see what happens.

I just want to add that I've been having the same problems with Quickbooks Desktop Prop Plus 2022 crashing since around May 2022.  I am glad Quickbooks is finally acknowledging this problem and investigating it.  I have spent countless hours troubleshooting this issue, and my company even bought a new computer in hopes that a hardware upgrade would help.  This problem is costing a lot of small businesses a lot of money.  It's a bitter pill to swallow after the forced upgrade to a subscription Pro Plus plan and the increased costs associated with it.  Please keep us updated and we hope for a fix to this problem asap.

I am an outside IT consultant, doing work for over 20 customers, I have this same problem, not only with my version of Quickbooks 2022 prom, but 12 of my customers have similar issues with the 2022 product, from desktop pro, desktop premier, and desktop enterprise.

This cannot ne an isolated case, and QB needs to address this. Platforms are Windows 10 and WIndows 11 so the issue is not going away. Started approximately first week in June of 2022.

Release R4 of Quickbooks Pro 2022 works GREAT!!  I have downgraded to no errors from data file. BUT you can use it ONLY 5 times before you run out of update skips. Then you are FORCED to update to R5 which is the crashing version.  They aren't going to fix this. Intuit wants everyone to move to online version. It's time to give up on Quickbooks
