Hey now,
Doing a backup and then a verify of the file I get notified there are errors. Do the file rebuild and told there are errors rebuild couldn't fix. Ok. Check the list, one error.
Error 213
Error: Verify Item list. Duplicate name encountered. Name: labor Records 1211 (575) and 113 (576). To fix, edit this element in the list and change its name.
Details: List: 'Item', record name: 'labor', List: 'Item', record name: 'Labor (Labor:20RoughIn - Labor)'
Have also checked the qbwin.log file and the error is the same. Seems to say that there is a duplicate List Item called 'labor'. Been through list items 10 times - there is no duplicate item called "labor". I have a top level item called "Labor" and another called "Labor Items" each with subitems but NO DUPLICATE.
I've tried renaming both of these top level items anyway just as a try. No help. I can't figure out what the error is. I see what appear to be record numbers given [1211 (575) and 113 (576)] but have no idea how to interpret them or find them in QB.
How can I fix this if I can't find the dup'd records? Or what else can this be if there are no actual dups.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Let me help figure out why you can't locate the duplicate item name, @JFrost.
First of all, thank you for sharing detailed information about the steps you've performed in fixing this error. It seems that this duplicate is no longer an active item. Let's go ahead and include all the inactive items on your Item List to check if this is the case.
Here's how:
However, if there are no duplicates on your inactive items, I'd suggest reaching out to our Desktop Support so they can further isolate this issue. They have useful tools that can help locate and fix this specific error.
I'd like to include this helpful article if you need steps on how to edit a duplicate name: QBWin.log: Verify list. Duplicate name encountered.

hi @JFrost ,
Another option to verify the problem, restore your backup file on QuickBooks 2019 using the trial license. Just my 2 cents.

Here's how:
- Go to the Lists menu and select Item List.
- Click the drop-down arrow for the Item tab and check the Show Inactive Items.
- Locate if there's a duplicate name for the item. If there is, you can change or delete the name.

Inactive items are already displayed.
Not sure I understand how that will help since the "automatic" rebuild isn't able to fix that kind of error - unless you're saying 2019 has capabilities that 2016 doesnt?
I will hold on to this just a bit to see if there's another solution so thanks for the input.
Question though - if I load it in 2019, won't it upgrade the file? How will I then open it in 2016 again? We are not able to upgrade versions at this time and if memory serves once a file is upgraded, older versions can no longer work with it.
thx,
Thanks for the follow-up, @JFrost.
Since there are no duplicates on your inactive items, I'd suggest reaching out to our Desktop Support so they can investigate why you're getting this specific error. They have tools that can check this further and other troubleshooting steps that'll resolve the issue.
You can always get back to me if you have additional questions. I'll be here to help.
Thank you for sharing what you've done so far, JFrost.
I'd agree with LilyC. Our phone or chat agents can take a look at this further using a screen sharing tool.
About your question on upgrading your file, you can no longer open it in QuickBooks 2016 once it's converted to 2019.
If there's anything that we can help, feel free to send a short reply below.
hi @JFrost ,
If you can open it on 2019, it means 2016 cound't fix your file with standard procedure. QuickBooks 2016 is no longer supported and no patch will be release. You should call support team to get more assistance. If your file is damaged, it is possible you have to pay data recovery service. You may also consider to purchase a 3rd party data recovery service, if you don't have any plan upgrading to 2019 yet.
