We've had this exact same problem when it comes to the accountants copy in the 2019 version of QuickBooks. My accountant spent 4 hours on the phone with Intuit trying to resolve it. I spent 2+ hrs with them 10 days ago without resolution. They supposedly elevated it to the "top level" to get resolution. I was promised a phone call back within a few days. Crickets!
I've now been on hold with them for almost an hour listening to the same 30 second saxophone music repeat itself. The tech support person I spoke to was clueless at best. I'm no further forward in resolving this. I simply want them to upgrade my license to 2020 on their nickel since this is THEIR problem to see if it resolves it. I've now paid my accountant for phone calls with intuit and time spent trying to resolve this. Bottom line: this has cost me several hundred dollars in wasted time.
It should be noted that the tech support people I spoke to had never heard of this before. I happened to stumble upon this thread purely by accident... which shows that I know more than their tech support people do.
To say the least, I'm disgusted with QB at this point...
I know exactly how you felt as if I'm in your place, @tecbce.
For us, we know that your time is precious to get your job done and make an extra mile to increase productivity and set goals for other important things aside from business.
I understand that you've talked to one of our supports once, in this case, I'll suggest the same thing to contact them with high success. They are the ones who can access your account and have a conversation is a secure environment.
Here's how:
From there, you can request to talk to very knowledgeable support to assist you and finish the task to upgrade your license to 2020. I assume that you're using the standalone QBDT product because it includes updating the grant.
I'll be adding this article as your reference when you can then install the QuickBooks Desktop 2020 for the detailed steps and process: Install QuickBooks Desktop.
Keep in mind that the Community is ready to help anytime if you need assistance. We're always here to help. Take care always, tecbce!
By the way, I paid my IT pros a few hundred dollars and they couldn't resolve this with all the guidance we got from QB. Finally switched over to another workstation that wasn't having this issue. So, they will have to rebuild my initial workstation after our busy season. In addition to me spending about 10 hours of non-billable time, the money I spent with our IT person, time spent customizing a new workstation, in the future I'll get to pay my IT folk some more to completely tear down and rebuild my original workstation.
I believe the QB support staff indicated "Problem Solved" about three times on this...
I'm an accountant and my client is using QB 2020. Another is using QB 2019 and it is also crashing. Both only started crashing when I installed the latest update, my guess is from the payroll tax update but that is just a guess. No, I absolutely cannot force all of my 2019 and 2020 clients to the QB 2021 version. That is most definitely NOT a solution for me. I will keep searching for a posted response I can use and I have sent the error reports repeatedly to QB with no response. This is truly unacceptable for Intuit.
I reinstalled the original download of my QB 2019 software in order to even work on the client. So thankful I do NOT do payroll for clients through Intuit!!! Someone decided to only give us X number of times to enter the version before forcing the update so I was forced to update 2020 yesterday. How unprofessional we all look to our clients that we cannot even make year end journal entries!
Ok, this is what worked for me. After reading about 2021 not playing nice with 2020, I decided to uninstall 2021 temporarily. Then I went back in to QB 2020 and tested entering, adding to and deleting journal entries - all things I had problems with the system crashing over. CRASHES STOPPED. Then I tested QB 2019. I had reinstalled a previous original version of 2019 just to get the system to stop crashing when I added a journal entry or changed the account number on a check. 2019 stopped crashing under the original release so I concluded the crashing was related to the latest update I was forced to install to QB 2019. As part of my post uninstall 2021 test, I updated QB 2019 to the previously crashing current revision and tried entering, adding to and deleting journal entries. CRASHES STOPPED. So my QB 2019 and 2020 are both working properly again. I will install QB 2021 on a separate laptop away from QB 2019 and 2020 until Intuit gets this bug corrected. If you are having the trouble I did, I suggest you do the same if you can.
I am using QB019, not upgrading right now and have done all the things suggested still getting error
I'd also like this resolved without delay, @Loisb.
The steps above are the recommended fixes to get around the QuickBooks crashing issue when accessing the accountant's file. Since you're still having the same error, I'd recommend contacting our live support.
One of our representatives can perform a remote session to take a closer look at what's causing this. They can also open a case for you or even escalate this if needed.
Before doing so, please see our support hours guide to ensure they can assist you on time. Let me guide you how:
By the way, you can also do other tasks with your accountant copy. Please head to The Essential Accountant's Copy Guide section in this article for more tips: Use the Accountant's Copy.
Stay in touch with me if you need more insights with managing your accountant's file in QuickBooks. I'll be here to give a guide or two.
Hi Loisb,
Sorry to hear QB 2019 is still crashing for you. I rid my computer of QB 2021 and am on the latest update for QB 2019 and have had zero problems since. Looks like you'll need QB tech support to help. With how the 2019 software behaved when QB 2021 was installed, who knows what else in your computer it might be reacting to.
I'm an accountant in the same situation. I feel your pain!! Trying to fix this. D8d you ever get a resolution?
This is not the kind of experience we want you to encounter in QuickBooks, jcamara.
Have you tried the resolutions provided above by my colleagues? If so, I suggest reaching out to our customer support team, This way, one of our agents will be able to pull up your account in a secure session and help you rectified the problem.
Keep in mind some options are only available at certain times. You can contact us every Mondays to Fridays from 6: 00 AM PST to 6:00 PM PST. Then, until 3:00 PM PST every Saturdays.

When using Accountant copy in QB 2019 Desktop, I am trying to make changes and it gives me the error code and closes. I am not able to make any changes at all without it crashing.
Let me help you solidify this in no time, @hehartman.
To start, let's ensure to update your QuickBooks to its latest release.
Here's how:
When the update is finished, close and reopen QuickBooks Desktop. Then, click Yes to complete the process. Once done, restart your computer.
If the issue persists, we can utilize the verify and rebuild tool to identify if it has something to do with the data.
May I also know what error code are you receiving? Additional info would be much appreciated for me to provide further steps.
I've also added this reference you can read for further guidance: Use the Accountant's Copy
That should get you going in the right direction. Please let me know how it goes by leaving a comment on this thread. I'm here to help you always. Have a wonderful day ahead.
If we upgrade the client's file from 2020 to 2021, can we still access & use the accountant's copy that we have, so we can finish the year end accounting to prepare the tax return?
Nice to have you join this thread, @Pam2467.
I can share with you some insights about accessing your accountant’s copy.
QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) users and accountants using the Accountant's Copy feature should use the same version or year of QBDT. This way, the Accountant’s copy is compatible with the users’ software and for the changes to be imported.
If you and your accountant are using a different version of QuickBooks, you’ll want to ensure the gap between the versions is just one year. Also, the accountant must have the recent version. This way, you can still work on the Accountant’s copy.
However, if you have the most recent version of QuickBooks compared to your accountant, you’ll want them to upgrade their software. If they don't wish to, they can utilize our free trial to ensure your Accountant’s copy is compatible with your program.
For more details about this process, check out this link for reference: Use the Accountant's Copy.
Once everything is all set, you can now import your accountant's changes into your company file and file your tax return seamlessly.
If you have any other clarifications about the Accountant’s copy, you’re always welcome to share them with me. I’m more than happy to help you. Keep safe a have a great week ahead!
I am working in an accountant's copy in Quickbooks 2019. Last week I kept getting an unrecoverable error when I would try and save a journal entry. I went through all the trouble-shooting steps to update, restart, etc. I even went on our server to make sure the QB data manager was working correctly. Since none of this worked, I contacted support. They told me to do what I had already done and then they proceeded to tell me the file must be bad and to request another copy. Well, I just went back into another client's accountant's copy that I made several adjusting journal entries in a few months ago. When I tried today, I got unrecoverable errors. So, it's an Intuit problem and I hope they get this fixed because these type of issues really eat up your time. Especially this time of year.

I do appreciate your time in performing some troubleshooting steps to get this resolved, @Bfolsom.
Since the unrecoverable errors persist, I'd suggest contacting our Customer Support Team. I understand that you already contacted them before, but they're the best support group to handle this concern. They have the necessary tools that can help check this matter further and get this resolved immediately.
Here's how:
For more information on the availability of our support, feel free to check out this article: Support hours and types.
Once it's fixed, you can now create the accountant's copy and save it through a USB or send the file through the Accountant's Copy File Service. See this article for more information on how to create an Accountant's Copy of your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.
Here's a reference about the Accountant's Copy workflows and general information: Use the Accountant's Copy.
If there's anything else that I can help you with accountant's copy or any concerns with QuickBooks, please let me know in the comment section down below. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Keep safe.
Contacting the team has not helped. I spent all day on the phone with an expert, we did EVERYTHING suggested in this thread. They used literally every tool available. NOTHING helped. Not one thing. We did a complete uninstall, downloaded and reinstalled as if brand new, and with a brand new company file, it still crashes completely when trying to do a simple, daily task of importing journal entries.
SO: please do not make any more suggestions punting to the customer support team because they also cannot fix it. My call escalated 3 times and we had the most senior person available helping, and after 6 hours was told they could not fix it and I had to enter them manually. I am not using an accountant's copy either, this is my regular QB 2020 file trying to import journal entries sent from my accountant. (again, tried every. single. suggestion. on this thread).
Tried all of these steps, issue persists
tried this, issue persists
Hello there, @2Thorpe2.
Since the issue persists after following the steps given above, I'd recommend getting in touch with our Customer Support Team. This way, they can pull up your account securely and help check the cause of the problem.
Also, I encourage checking our Help articles page to learn some tips and tricks in managing your QBDT account. From there, you can read great articles that can guide you through the steps by steps process.
Please know that you can always get back to us if you have other questions. I'm always here to help.
The customer support team cannot resolve the issue. Read the comments form everyone! Is Intuit ignoring these issues?
We understand your frustration regarding your recent experience with our support team, Bfolsom.
We'd want to check the root cause of the issue which we're unable to do so within the Community space. Our Phone Support Team can remotely check your company file and walk you through sorting this issue with you. They can also open investigation for you so our engineers can look into why you;re still seeing the unrecoverable error after performing the steps provided by my colleagues.
Feel free to mention me if you need anything else. Take care and keep safe!
I communicated with Intuit customer service and they said that this is a known problem and that a fix should be available within a few days to a week. That was one week ago. Can you update me on the status of the fix?
