Quickbooks Desktop for Mac 2019 crashes when opening data files

I have my QB files stored on dropbox and use them across two computers (desktop and laptop). Everything seemed to be working fine, but suddenly, when opening the data files on my laptop, QB 2019 instantly crashes every time. I'm using the latest version, and I've tried the troubleshooting steps in other discussions (removing plist files, and also reinstalling QB) but nothing has worked. I'm able to open the issues fine on my desktop, and they are not open on another machine when trying to access them. I have not upgraded to Catalina so that's not the issue either. Crash file is attached - anyone have any ideas on how to fix?

Quickbooks Desktop for Mac 2019 crashes when opening data files

I did a search on some old forum communication and found another person who had run into this same issue.  In their case the trash had the wrong permissions on it and QuickBooks was failing when trying to verify that the company file wasn't in the trash. QuickBooks couldn't read the trash folder.

Double click on the Trash can to open the Trash window.  With that window open and in the foreground choose File->Get Info.  At the bottom of the Trash Info window it will show you the permissions for the Trash.  It should have your logged in user set with Read & Write permission and everyone else with No Access.  If you don't have that reset it to be that way.  Let me know here if that was the issue.

I only recommend put the QBW file in cloud storage (e.g dropbox/gdrive) for backup purpose, not working on it. Try download the file to local and open it.

I did copy the file locally as a test and it still didn't work - just crashed. I cannot even open the sample file in QB. However, I've used the files off of dropbox for the last 3 years with no issues, so even though it may not be recommended, it has worked fine.

Is the file in the trashcan?  This is what the stack trace is showing:

7 QuickBooks 2019 0x000000010a3fdb30 FileIsInTheTrash + 114

QuickBooks is supposed to warn you if the file is in the trash but I recall their being a bug in that.  Look in your trash can - if there is a QuickBooks file in there drag it out to your desktop (don't delete it - it may be your most recent file!)  Then launch QuickBooks while holding down the option key. This prevents it from trying to open the last used file.  Then use File->Open menu to navigate to the file.

Nope - very strange, but my trash is empty. I just verified again by trying to reopen, as well as using the option button, but it crashed as before, and that line is still present in the crash report. FWIW, QB opens just fine, so it's not an issue with trying to open a failed file. It just won't open any data files after it launches without crashing.

Welcome to the Community, jtaylor1.

To better isolate the issue, you may need to uninstall QuickBooks, rename the installation files left behind, and then reinstall the program.

Uninstall QuickBooks for Mac:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. From the Finder menu (search bar) on the upper right corner of your screen, choose Go Applications.
  3. Click the QuickBooks icon and drag/move it to the Trash.

User PLIST:

  1. While on your desktop, from the Finder menu, select Go.
  2. Hold down the Option key, then choose Library.
  3. Open the Preferences folder
  4. Locate the PLIST files with QuickBooks and your version in the name, then move them to the Trash.
    Note: Delete everything containing "com.intuit.QuickBooks20XX."
  5. Empty the Trash.

Reinstall the latest version:

  1. Go to QuickBooks Product Updates.
  2. Click [Change] to select your QuickBooks Desktop version.
  3. Click the Download button to download the installer file to your computer.
  4. Double-click the downloaded .dmg file.
  5. Drag the QuickBooks Desktop icon to the Applications folder to install.

I'm leaving an article to help and guide you more about QuickBooks for Mac 2019: QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019User’s Guide.

I'll right here if you need further assistance with QuickBooks. Have a good one.

Weird.  Just confirming: You can launch QB just fine if you hold down the option key (which prevents it from opening a file). But then when you try and open a file you get this crash.

Two things to try.  First is to clear out the preferences:

1. Quit QuickBooks.

2. Hold down the option key and choose Go->Library from the Finder.

3. In the window that opens (Library) double click on the Preferences folder to open it.

4. Find the com.intuit.quickbooks2019.plist file.  Drag that to the trash.

5. Relaunch QuickBooks.  Did that fix it?

Second thing to try. Turn off third party extensions:

1. Reboot your computer and hold down the shift key as it reboots. This disables third party extensions and drivers.

2. Try QuickBooks again. Does it work?

There's a third thing you can try a swell:

1. Move the file out of the Dropbox folder and put it in your documents folder.

2. Can you open it in QB from there?

Finally, if none of these works, try opening the Sample Product file from the window that shows up if no company is open.  Does that open?

Let me know here what you find out.  If none of these work we can dig deeper.  If its a bug I'd sure like to know more so we can fix it.

Thank you! Not the exact solution but it got me on the right track. You were correct in that permissions were incorrect on the trash, but setting the permissions actually didn't solve the problem. I had to actually delete the .Trash folder from my user account and recreate it after setting the permissions for it to work properly. Then files opened as they should. Thank you again for your help :)

Glad it's solved. Not sure how it happens that the permissions on the trash get messed up. I'm going to look into recreating it and trying to make QuickBooks give an actionable error message instead of crashing.

Quickbooks Desktop for Mac 2019 crashes when opening data files

I just migrated my files to a new MacBookPro running Catalina and I am having the same problem.  I can open Quickbooks 2019, but any file I open crashes the program (including the sample files).  I have followed the instructions for a clean install but same problem.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Quickbooks Desktop for Mac 2019 crashes when opening data files

Hi there, bpm3,

Great job for performing the clean install to stop QuickBooks from crashing.

A clean install fixes issues that keep you from opening your company file, display and template problems, and a few other situations. It also replaces the QuickBooks system files on your computer.

On the other hand, our Engineering Team has identified data file incompatibility issues between the old version and the new macOS Catalina. This includes data loss and crashes. You'll want to found out how to safely continue using QuickBooks Desktop for Mac on the operating system.

Feel free to read through this article for more details: Risk of data file corruption and data loss. It will tell you what action to require before installing macOS Catalina.

This solution didn't work for me. I have OS Sonoma 14. When I opened trash, there was no option to select permissions.
