My VFW Post has purchased Quickbooks Pro for Windows for the Post laptop.  I am going to be taking over the completion of setting it up and managing it.  I have an iMac at home.  If I purchase Quickbooks for Mac and install it on my iMac and set it up to match the Windows version can I bring data back and forth on a USB drive so I do not always have to bring the laptop home?  I would save any changes to the USB and then make sure the two versions have the same data.

Hello @truland,

Thank you for posting in the Community! Hope you had a great weekend. :)

You're right! You can access the company file from two different computers. The good thing is you don't need a USB drive. The easiest way would be to upload your file on your iCloud drive. Here's how to enable that feature:

  1. Choose the Apple menu, then select System Preferences.
  2. Click iCloud, then enter your Apple ID and password.
  3. Turn on iCloud drive.

After the iCloud drive is set up, move your company file to that location so you can access it from home. Here's the user's manual for QuickBooks for Mac: QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 User's Guide. If you go to page 24, you'll see additional information on how to access your company file from different computers.

I'm always here to help if you have any more questions. Just respond to this post and I'll happily answer!

Thanks but that would only work if I both computers were Mac correct? If the laptop was Windows and my main computer was an iMac it wouldn't work correct?  The bigger problem is my  VFW Post purchased QB Desktop Pro for the Post's Windows laptop. The member who purchased it and did the initial basic install is no longer available due to a serious medical condition. We have the license for up to 3 computers and I have been tasked to take over.  I have the first serious problem of trying to get my contact info to replace his so I can make backup and have more than one person on the account.  I am still logging in as him because for 3.5 weeks I have sent requests in to have the Primary Contact changed. What would happen if I simply uninstalled the product and reinstalled it on the laptop? Since it is already registered by him for the organization would I still face the same issues?  I am afraid if I somehow get logged out I will never get back in.

Hey there, truland.

Thanks for dropping by the Community today, I'm more than happy to help you out today. I definitely recommend changing your Primary Contact on file before transitioning over to your iMac. If the previous Primary Contact is unable to access the information, you'll need to reach out to our support team to verify a couple of things on the back end. That way they can help you set up the new Primary Contact. To reach them, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help
  3. Press Contact Us
  4. Type in Change Primary Contact and click Continue
  5. Scroll down and select Get a Callback

Also, when you get to the steps to convert your file to the iMac, it's important to know that the conversion process revolves around converting the company file, since each operating system has its own respective version of QuickBooks Desktop, because the file is what needs to be converted, you won't be able to operate on both machines or use the license on another machine of a different operating system. When you're ready to convert from Windows to Mac, you can check out this helpful link down below:

If there's anything else I can help with in the meantime, feel free to post here anytime. Thanks for dropping by and have a nice afternoon.

thanks for the speedy reply. A couple of things. First, I have been trying to get the Primary Contact changed to me for over 3 weeks. I send in the information required and either hear nothing or the last time they wanted me to get a permission letter from someone not even in my VFW Post. They wanted a permission letter from the VFW National Commander, even though he has no bearing on what we do as an individual Post for our financial software package. I did include (3 times now) my photo id, my Post Commanders photo id, my Post Commander's permission letter, and our Post's Articles of Incorporation.  I cannot figure out how to actually talk to someone on the phone.  Second, if I simply uninstalled the software and re-installed it on the Post laptop would that allow me to register it and have me as Primary Contact.  Lastly, I am not looking to convert to a Mac right now. While it would be nice to be able to work on it on my Mac, I bring the laptop back and forth for now when I need to work at home.  I really do appreciate the advice, but at this point, I am running out of options to actually advocate the continued attempt to use QuickBooks due to the lack of support. Any further advice would however be greatly appreciated. I think it could do everything we need and more if we can get it set up and start using it.

Hello there, @truland.

I understand the need to get this resolved. Changing a primary contact usually takes up to 7 to 10 days, as long as you’ve provided all the requirements needed. After that, you’ll receive an email regarding the status.

Since you already sent a request, I recommend contacting our support team again to follow up on the status.

Installing the software on a new computer won't help, it'll ask you to activate or register QuickBooks. To do that, you must be the primary contact.

To contact our support team, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Login to your QuickBooks Desktop and go to the Help tab.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. In the Have a Question window, click the Contact Us link.
  4. Then, select any topics.
  5. Under Here's how to connect with a QuickBooks expert section, click the Get Phone Number button.

Before doing so, please review our support hours to ensure your issue gets addressed right away. Please note that we've made some changes to our support options for QuickBooks Desktop. Our representatives are available through chat or messaging to accommodate all our customer's concerns effectively.

I'm always around to lend a hand if you have more QuickBooks concerns. Take care and stay safe always.
