Quickbooks is crashing after updating to Sonoma

I have QuickBooks for Mac 2020 desktop version. I updated to Sonoma 14.1 and QuickBooks still crashes every time I try to open the software. I suspect that’s because I haven’t updated QuickBooks for at least 1 year because the last time I updated QuickBooks I encountered a problem with the software and support had to help me get my QuickBooks running again so I’ve been reluctant to update it. Could not installing updates be the reason I am unable to open QuickBooks now with Sonoma 14.1 iOS installed?

Quickbooks is crashing after updating to Sonoma

Hello there, @richardgreen1.

I want to make sure I give you the correct reason why your 2020 QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is not opening after installing the new macOS version 14.1. Then, I will guide you on how to resolve this issue by performing some upgrades.

This issue is because QuickBooks Desktop 2020 for Mac is outdated and not compatible with the new macOS version. The 2020 version was not designed to work seamlessly with the latest macOS update. As a result, you may encounter compatibility issues and difficulties when trying to access QuickBooks Desktop 2020 for Mac on your updated macOS system.

To ensure smooth operation and compatibility, it is advisable to consider upgrading to a newer version.

Here's how:

  1. Go to this link: Downloads & Updates and proceed to the next step.
  2. Select QuickBooks Mac Desktop.
  3. Choose the appropriate version from the list of released patches:
    • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2024 R1.1
    • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2023 R5.2
    • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2022 R10.2
    • QuickBooks Mac 2021 R13.3
  4. Click Search and follow the provided instructions.
  5. Hit Download or Get the latest updates.

For detailed information about the system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop, you can refer to the following articles:

If you have any other concerns or encounter further issues when opening QuickBooks, feel free to post here again, and I will assist you in finding the best solution. Have a great day.

@richardgreen1

You should reinstall your QBD 2020. If the same error persists, contact me in private. We can share the trial version of QBD 2021 to isolate the issue.

Quickbooks is crashing after updating to Sonoma

Ethel, thanks for the instructions. On the Downloads and Updates page I selected QuickBooks Mac Desktop and the year 2020 which is the version I have (see attached). Also attached is what I see on the next page. I only see the option to download the program or get the latest updates. I don't see the option to choose one of the list of released patches:

    • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2024 R1.1
    • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2023 R5.2
    • QuickBooks Mac Plus 2022 R10.2
    • QuickBooks Mac 2021 R13.3

Please let me know how to find the patches above so I can download one of them.

Thanks!

to see if that will enable me to open my QuickBooks on my laptop.

Thanks!

@richardgreen1

The patch files are only available for Windows version. If you are using QBD for Mac, you have to reinstall the program.

Thanks for getting back to this thread, @richardgreen1.

Allow me to chime in and share insights to help download your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac successfully.

As mentioned by my colleague above, make sure to have the latest QuickBooks to work seamlessly with the macOS update.

Additionally, when accessing the Downloads and Updates page, please note that the option to select a specific patch isn't available. Instead, you can choose the country, version of QuickBooks Desktop, and then proceed with selecting the release date.

You can simply select the year of the release, and proceed with downloading the program or getting the latest updates. By doing so, you will ensure that you have the most up-to-date version of QuickBooks Mac Desktop, which includes all the necessary patches and improvements released during that year.

If you need more information on how to install and set up QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, this link will provide you with detailed guidance: Install and set up QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

You might find your systems don't meet some or all of the minimum requirements to run QuickBooks Desktop. In most cases, you can upgrade your system to meet all the necessary requirements. However, if upgrading your system is not feasible for you, an alternative option to consider is migrating to QuickBooks Online

If you have any further questions or concerns with downloading your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, please feel free to let me know. I'm here to assist you always.

Many of us are small business decades long desktop users that don't need or want most of the online services or pricing.  We have a right to use a product we purchased without losing our program function and data.  Everyone please file a  complaint on the Federal Trade Commission website indicating the terrible dilemma QB has left us with, including the hardship and damages to our small businesses.  Go to FTC dot gov. to file a complaint.  This may also give rise to a class action.  Abandoning us 2019 and 2021 desktop users is modern day piracy.  The lack of notice, alternative solutions, and unwillingness to solve the issue was and is done on purpose.  If the FTC gets enough complaints, they will likely investigate this situation.

QB Desktop 2019 has outdated since May 2022. You should forward this reference to FTC

Hi guys,

I get your frustration but here is the hard truth.  No company is required to supply FOREVER support for FREE a product against possible future changes to systems that haven't been invented at the time of release. That is why we all have to buy future iterations of products.  You are also free to downgrade you OS. Quicken ( although late and in-elegantly) provided upgrade to supported versions. We all know that things expire. A service plan on an old computer, phone expires; for insurance we pay yearly or monthly. Complaining to FTC will do nothing. Just like any product, we occasionally have to replace Quickbooks, every 3 years is annoying, I get it, but reasonable.  We cannot expect FOREVER for FREE against the UNKNOWN.

I agree with some of what you say.  Every few years I would purchase the newest desktop version.  As a result, decades of crucial financial data is hostage to that software that I would purchase.  What is unacceptable is for QB to do away with the desktop version, knowing full well how dependent its users are, in order to force a cloud based version for financial data in ether plus a horrific comparative expense for us small time users.

Thanks for doing that!  This effort may have helped inspire QB to fix the Sonoma QB2019 issue.  For the first time today my 2019 Mac version did not crash and seems to be working, though I've done very little so far, so the jury is still out.  This is something of a miracle.  I hope it works for newer versions as well.  Group action is important.  I've put more of my reasoning in a reply below.

QB still has the desktop versions and even a 2024 one, but you have to call and it only last a year.

Apple changed something in a Sonoma update that let QB 2019 stat working again. It wasn’t QB

I use a 2023 desktop version. I tried the cloud version but I had too many migration issues and gave up on it.  For current desktop issues (if I am correct) it is a 1 year subscription, but this also means …support.

I have been a QBDT user since 1999. I have paid for more upgrades than I can count. My current nonprofit can not afford a yearly $600+ expense. I don’t mind a little upgrade fee, but this is WRONG. They are holding us hostage. This is very stressful, all our financial records. I currently have 2019. I do not use payroll. I use AR/ AP. So for me to upgrade is not needed. But with that being said, I need support. I don’t mind a reasonable support fee.

I have QB Desktop for Mac 2021 and had the same issue after upgrading to Sonoma.  I was able to download the QB 2021 for Mac with latest patches, installed that and the converted file (R1) opened and I'm running again.

Thanks for all the dialogue here.  It helped.

Quickbooks is crashing after updating to Sonoma

Hi BrentSeaman. I too have QB Desktop Mac 2021 and have not updated it since R13.1 . Also I'm currently still on OS Monterey 12.7.1 because I'm fearful of losing access to QB if I update to Sonoma. I don't know whether to update my OS first or if I should update QB first. I do not have any plans to move to online, and don't use any QB add-ons that would force me to, so I want to stay with desktop. Is there a crystal clear step by step I can follow to get me as updated as possible and still have QB Mac 2021 work with Sonoma?
