We are experiencing a Script error while running Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021.  It started about 2 weeks ago.  Here is the script error message : Line: 68, Char: 54, Error: Expected ')', Code:0.  This is very annoying.  How do I get rid of this message?

Let me help you get rid of the script message, April31.

Script errors are generally connected to Internet Explorer. QuickBooks by default uses that browser's settings to connect with the internet. We have different steps to get past it.

First, you'll have to set up Internet Explorer to be your default browser .

Next, let's add Intuit as a trusted site in Internet Explorer. Here's how:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click Command, then select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options, then go to the Security tab.
  4. Click Trusted sites, then click Sites.
  5. In the Add this website to the zone field, enter *.intuit.com, then click Add.
  6. In the Trusted sites window, uncheck Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.
  7. Close the Trusted sites window, then uncheck Enable Protected Mode.
  8. Close the browser.

Then, we'll have to disable add-ons on the Internet Explorer. Here's how:

  1. Open the browser, then click Command.
  2. Select Tools, then click Internet Options.
  3. Go to Programs, then click Manager add-ons.
  4. Select disable add-ons, and click OK.

Lastly, clear Internet Explorer's cache data.

If there's anything else that you need, feel free to get back to this thread. We're around to help you. Take care!

IE is not a great browser.  I use Firefox and I do not want to set IE as my default.  I have not had this problem before with IE not set as my default browser.  We bought the 2021 version in January and the issue only started two weeks ago, plus my browser has always been Firefox.  Why is this happening now? I have entered the *.intuit as a trusted site in IE.  I changed the rest of what you mentioned but I still have the problem.  Is there a patch or anything else I can do besides setting IE as my default browser?

I'm here to share the importance of using IE as a default browser, April31.

QuickBooks Desktop uses IE to download updates. This also displays many of the windows in the program. Thus, you'll need to have an updated IE as the default browser.

I'd recommend performing the steps provided by my colleague to get rid of the script error. Before proceeding, please set up IE as your default browser.

Here's how:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to the Gear icon in the upper right corner.
  3. Click Internet Options.
  4. Select the Programs tab.
  5. Under Default Web Browser click the Make Default button.
  6. Choose OK.

For more details, please see this article: Use our built-in browser in QuickBooks Desktop.

If the issue persists, I'd suggest contacting our QuickBooks Support Team. They can have this further checked and investigated. They're also equipped with tools that'll help us determine the main cause of this error.

Additionally, I encourage visiting our QuickBooks Status page from time to time. This helps you determine if there are ongoing issues with QuickBooks.

Please get in touch with us if you'll need further assistance in setting IE as your default browser. I'm determined to get this script error resolved.

I've gone through all of these steps and still getting the script errors - I event reinstalled QB.  One of the errors shows this URL: https://s.go-mpulse.net/boomerang/AEN8U......there are about 4 errors that pop up before I can get started working in QB.

I've been using QB Acct 2021 along with other versions for years and this just started happening this morning.  I've also had Chrome as my default browser during this time and no issues.

Not sure what to do and don't relish spending an hour on a chat with Intuit.  Thoughts?

Hello, Doug.

I appreciate adding the links and doing what you can to resolve the issue. Before we take this to our support, I have a couple of solutions you can do to fix the scrip errors.

Have you tried running the Tool Hub? If it not, it can help you fix most issues when using QuickBooks (including script errors). Here's how to run it:

  1. Download the latest version from this article: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.
  2. After downloading, run and install the Tool Hub.
  3. Run the Tool Hub, then click the Program Problems tab.
  4. Follow the prompts to fix the script issue.

If you haven't done it yet, you can also repair your QuickBooks Desktop copy: Repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows.

However if you're still encountering the script errors, I would recommend contacting our support at this point. They'll check your script error files and help you resolve them. Here's how to reach them:

If you can open QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. When the program is opened, press the F1 key.
  2. Click the Contact Us button.
  3. In the box, type something like "Script errors in QuickBooks."
  4. Click Let's talk, then choose how you want to reach us.

If you can't open the program, you'll want to go to this link to contact us: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/contact.

After fixing the issue, do you need to run reports for your financials? This article can help you out: Understand reports.

I'm ready to help you out if you have other questions with QuickBooks Desktop. If you're looking to complete your other tasks, let me know and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

I have the same issue, starting about a week ago, and am running desktop version 2013.  No updates are available but it has been working fine.  I use Chrome as my browser, do not have IE installed, unless that is what Edge is now.

Since this is happening on different versions of Quickbooks my guess is that its caused by a Microsoft update. With Microsoft's recent announcements regarding end of support for IE and Edge updates designed to completely take over from IE by running  IE mode inside of Edge its likely that an error has been inadvertently introduced by a recent Win10/Edge update.

Setting IE as a default browser is unacceptable, and is forbidden for all CMMC Level 1 and above compliant companies. This browser is end-of-life and nearly all DoD contractor IT departments forbid its use or installation. Intuit needs to come up with a better solution - either make the product compliant with a standard browser that is usable by DoD contractors or permit QuickBooks to be run in a VM or sandbox.

I just had some success with this error this morning, combining a few suggestions found here.  In my opinion, it's partly QB problem and partly a MS update issue.  What I did that worked in my case was:

1) Edit the windows host file (found in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) to include the domains displayed in each of the error messages shown when opening and closing the program.  For me, the below lines are what I added to the bottom of the file, but the domains may be different for you..

127.0.0.1 cdn.optimizely.com
127.0.0.1 tags.tiqcdn.com
127.0.0.1 s.go-mpulse.net
127.0.0.1 qbdtipd.qbinproduct.intuit.com

2) Open cmd prompt and ipconfig -flushdns

3) Look for the windows KB5003637 (June 8, 2021) update in your windows update history, if it's there, uninstall it and wait for the process to complete/restart.

4) Be sure to restart your computer after the update.

Note: Since this worked for me and seemed to have something to do with a windows update, I temporarily disabled windows updates with the hope that in 30 days or so, it doesn't come back and that either QB or MS will get to work and come up with a permanent solution for people.

Hopefully this helps..

Hi lem_shattuck!

I understand that you want to use a different browser instead of Internet Explorer. Let me explain and share some details about this.

Currently, QuickBooks Desktop requires Internet Explorer 11 (32-bit). You'll want to look for a third-party application that you can integrate so that you can run it on VM or Sandbox. If you're a developer, you can visit https://developer.intuit.com/ for further assistance.

Also, I'd encourage you to send feedback to our engineers and let them know about browser compliance.

  1. Go to the Help menu, then select Send Feedback Online.
  2. Enter your request/product suggestion, then select Next.
  3. Click Skip and send a message, and choose Feedback as the Category.

I'll be here if you need more help. Take care always!

Actually, I've just butted heads with IT. Can't use IE even in a sandbox or VM. You're going to find this issue with every single defense contractor in the coming months. If IE is the tool required to maintain updates, then this means that we can't even keep the product updated with security patches. This is wholly unacceptable. Please note - as required by law, I am filing a vulnerability report with the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Once they have reviewed, Quickbooks will likely be listed as vulnerable, resulting in automatic removal from the computers of most US defense contractors. The timeframe for this type of event is usually days not weeks. Urge you to contact developers ASAP to correct defect.

Adding those lines to the HOSTS file worked for me.

I didn't undo the KB5003637 update and it still worked without any script errors

But I believe  the date that the KB5003637 update was applied to my computer is the day that the script errors appeared in Quickbooks.

Thanks for the info

These are the standard solutions that your leadership provides to give customers.

The root issue is these script errors are coming from the multitude of advertising you have embedded in the Home UI.  The links on the side to buy checks etc.  The other icons that link you somewhere for capital, etc.

I called support and of course, they blame MS and tell me I need to take the issue up with MS the error is their error.  While true, it is Intuit's application triggering it.  Maybe if you are going to force advertisements at customers who pay a premium to use your product, you hold their feet to the fire to make their scripting compliant with modern security practices.

Make no mistake, I am not holding YOU responsible, though I am replying to your post.  This falls 100% on the hands of Intuit's leadership for not hold themselves accountable for their product development.

Thank you for posting here in the Co1mmunity, BJ66.

Let's get this figured out so we can fix the error message you're receiving.

When you open QuickBooks, do you get the error message? If this is the case, you cannot proceed because QuickBooks tries to connect to your Internet Explorer. We can try configuring your Internet Explorer (IE) to ensure it doesn't happen again. Before we begin, make IE the default browser. Here's how it works:

First,  set up your Internet Explorer to be your default browser

Next, let's verify that your computer date and time are correct. Here's how:

  1. In the system tray, double-click the time display.
  2. In the Date and Time Settings window, verify the current date and time and modify, if necessary.
  3. Select Time Zone, and choose the appropriate time zone.

Then, we'll have to check the Cipher Strength. Follow the steps below:

  1. Open the browser, then click Command.
  2. Click Tools, then click Internet Options.
  3. Go to Programs, then click Manage add-ons.
  4. Tick, disable add-ons and click OK.

For detailed information and the next step, utilize this article: Verify and Troubleshoot QuickBooks Desktop and Internet Explorer settings.

Post your response below if you need anything else. Have a great day!

Seriously? Make Internet Explorer the default browser??!!!  Support for IE ended in June, 2022. Continued use of IE represents a serious security risk! And THAT's part of your solution??????
