Can I add a tag to an existing reconciled transaction? If so how?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hey there, @ndn. Thanks for getting back with us.
You can tag transactions such as invoices, expenses, and bills. At the moment, you can’t tag general journal entries or transfers. You also can’t tag things like customers or items. That being said, I've included how to edit register transactions below. Check it out:
That's it! Some transactions can't be edited directly in the register. You need to select the transaction and open the full form to make edits.
I recommend checking out our video tutorials since you mentioned your fairly new to QuickBooks Online. It's jam-packed with useful tips and tricks to become a pro in no time.

Hi Ndn,
Thank you for joining the QuickBooks Community. Tagging transactions is a new feature within QuickBooks Online to get deeper insights into your sales and expenses without impacting your books. If you're not able to see the tagging transactions as yet, our engineers are working hard for everyone to receive this feature. I recommended this article, and it shows you how to create tag groups, create new tags and tag transactions, edit tags and tag groups, and get insights from the tags. Please let me know if you have any additional questions and have a good day.
Thanks. I had watched that. I am trying to locate how to edit an existing transaction that does not have a tag and add a tag to it. I am new and it might be that I don't know where to go to edit existing transactions. The places I have found do not have field for tag. Is there such an editing screen?

Thank you. My first problem was the edit button was not visible on the screen. I thought the only thing I could do was delete! Rookie mistake. The second thing was I was trying to tag deposits which is not an option. I have really appreciated all the videos and info that is available and now this personal help. Thanks again.
This thread is helpful, however I am curious: When will tags be available to my QBO account?
Thanks
Dennis P
I'm glad that you find this thread helpful, Dennis!
The Tags is still a new feature, and we're adding this to QBO accounts by clusters. Our engineers haven't given a target date, but it will soon be available on all accounts. Please stay tuned for some updates on the QuickBooks Blog page.
We're just right here if you have other questions in mind. Have a healthy and joyful weekend!
Can I display tags associate with a particular check in my register? If not, why not? It makes it difficult to know if a transaction has been tagged or not if I can't see it when looking at all of the transactions.
Hello @bonobo_a_gogo,
As of the moment, there isn't an integrated way to see the tags associated with your transactions upon reviewing them in the account register.
In the meantime, let's pull up and customize one of your financial reports to see the list of bank transactions with tags. Let me show you how.
In the same manner, here's an article you can read to learn more about customizing your report: How to get the most out of your financial reports?
On top of that, I've also included this reference for a compilation of articles you can use while working with us: What are tags and why should I use them?
If you have any other questions, please let me know in the comments below. I'll be here to lend a hand.
I love the tag feature, but it is a real bummer that is not available for all transactions, in my case I need it on journal entries. Are there any plans to add the Tag Feature to Journal entries? Thank you.
Tag is a great feature that lets you track your money, KjTv.
When you put tags into groups, you get deeper insights into how your business is doing. As mentioned by @JessT, this is still a new feature, and we're adding this to QBO accounts by clusters. I'll make sure to take note of this so we can submit it to our developer's team. We may not have a definite time on when this will be made available, but this will be the easiest way for the feature to be suggested for general journal entries. You may also want to stay current with the latest product updates by visiting our QuickBooks Blog.
I've also included these helpful articles in case you'll want to know more information about QuickBooks Online and its features.

Hello, is it ready in Singapore QBO for tag feature?
Thanks for posting here, patricktan.
I understand that you want to use the Tags feature. Currently, this isn't available in the QuickBooks Online Singapore version.
As a workaround, you'll want to utilise using either class tracking or location tracking. These features work like tags. You can use them in tracking transactions by segments.
You may visit the Small Business Center Blog. From there, you'll see our new updates and also tips in managing your business.

When will we be able to tag transfers?
I want to categorize transfers into my savings account to track different savings goals. Is there a better way to do that in Quickbooks?
We appreciate your time posting, @BrianBrian.
I understand that you want to categorize transfers by adding tags on them. For now, the tags option is unavailable. As a workaround, you can use the Memo field.
Also, you can create a check:

Will tags be available on transfers soon? I'd like to use tags to earmark what certain transfers are for (eg., tag a transfer into savings for taxes or for a capital expense) to indicate how much has been saved for these earmarked purposes.
Hello there, @ckelleher. Thanks for joining this conversation.
Let me go over and discuss further details about the Tags feature in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
Currently, the option to add tags to transfer transactions is unavailable. We may not have the exact time frame on when this will be implemented, however, to track its status, I recommend visiting our QBO feature request website. From there, you can also add a vote and additional insights for the request.
In the meantime, you'll want to utilize either the class or location tracking features to record your transfers by segments. These work like tags since they put the transaction on specific groups.
Once settled, running reports by class is a breeze in QBO. These reports will help you easily see your sales, costs, or profitability by class.
I'm just around the corner to help in case you have any other concerns about managing your transfer transactions. Just post a reply below and I'll circle back to help you out. Have a good one.
Hi, I have a journal entry that I need to tag. The journal entry relates to Cost of Goods (we don't track our products/CoGs in Quicbbooks, using Shopify instead and creating a journal entry at the end of each month to record CoGs) for a specific trade show that we did. How can I create a journal entry that I can tag?
Providing the best experience with the Tags feature to other areas in QuickBooks is what we aim for, rolandgp,
Currently, tagging your journal entry isn't possible. You can only tag transactions such as invoices, expenses, and bills. I can see the importance of this feature to your business. With that, I suggest you send feedback to our product developers to request the addition of this feature to QBO. Here's how:
Once done, feel free to visit our QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website to track the status of your submitted feedback.
Your valuable feedback goes to our Product Development team to help improve your experience in QuickBooks Online (QBO). You can track feature requests through the QuickBooks Online Feature Requests website. Additionally, you can keep an eye on our QuickBooks Blog to stay up-to-date with the latest news. Alternatively, we can run the Profit and Loss by Tag Group filtered by specific tags mapped under a project. Here's how:
I'm adding these articles to learn more about recording journal entries, as well as managing your Chart of Accounts:
Here's more information on how to reverse or delete a journal entry to update and correct it: Reverse or delete a journal entry in QuickBooks Online.
I'm always here to help if you need further assistance in modifying your journal entry. Just let me know by leaving a reply below. Take care and have a good one!
It is vitally important to be able to tag journal entries in QBO. This was touted as a replacement for classes, but since it's so limited that's clearly untrue. This is such an easy fix; when will this be available? Or do I need to tell my clients to use another software that can handle such a simple task?
How is it possible that tagging Journal Entries is not possible? This has been asked for in this thread for two years by multiple people, with the same canned answer coming back each time. This seems to be such an easy fix and would help make this product more usable. I suspect the only reason is so we upgrade the product to enable classes - I don't see any other reason why this couldn't be easily integrated.
