Trouble opening a company file in desktop 2016

*Context* I am still using 2016 Pro, as a General Contractor I need that sophisticated estimate & invoice function. Doing all other banking on the current online version & find the Estimate & Invoice not customizable enough for my business.

Recently QB 2016 pro has stopped loading the company file & now won't even let me restore from a backup .dmg file even when I do the the instructed "save to documents folder".  Files are grey and not selectable. Looking for a work around or any tips. TIA

Trouble opening a company file in desktop 2016

Thank you for choosing QuickBooks as your partner in business, @CervCon.

Let me share with you some information about the QuickBooks service discontinuation policy. Sunset/outdated version of QuickBooks Desktop is no longer supported by QuickBooks.

Since QuickBooks desktop software versions are supported by Intuit for three years, last May 31, 2020, access to Support, Banking, multicurrency, compliance updates, and other services through QuickBooks Desktop 2016 software, will be discontinued. This includes all versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, and Enterprise Solutions. This also means you'll no longer receive critical security updates starting June 1, 2020.

However, you can repair and run Clean install from the control panel on your computer. This will help you open your QuickBooks Desktop.

Here’s how.

  1. Make sure to have a backup copy of your company file.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu.
  3. Search for Control Panel. Then, open Control Panel.
  4. Select Programs and Features or Uninstall a Program.
  5. From the list of installed programs, select the version of QuickBooks Desktop you're having problems with.
  6. Select Uninstall/Change and then Remove

Once done, reinstall QuickBooks Desktop.

  1. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooks.exe).
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions. Accept the software license agreement and then select Next.
  3. Enter your Product and License numbers. Then select Next.

Please see this article to continue with steps 3 and 4. Install QuickBooks Desktop.

If you got the same results, I suggest upgrading to the latest version of QuickBooks Desktop and transfer your files. The upgrade is needed to keep the updates compatible with the software. This will also ensure that you’re getting the most accurate calculations for your data to avoid potential costly errors down the line.

You can check out this article for additional information about the QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy. Discontinuation policy.

Also, I have a few articles for you about Desktop 2020, installing, upgrading your company file, and support information if you need a hand with the process. Check them out below.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am here to help. Have a nice day!

@CervCon

Do you have QB Desktop 2016 Pro edition or QB Desktop 2016 Mac edition? You are unable to restore any QBD Mac file on QBD Windows directly.
