Trying to restore Accountant's Copy different versions Error message "Company file needs to be updated. Please ask your QB administrator to update the file"

I'm trying to restore QBA file from client's Enterprise v2020 to my Enterprise v2021 unsucessully.  I have the right credentials to login, then get the error message above.

Any thoughts?  Do I need to convert file using v2020?  If so, I didnt buy that version.  Will Intuit let me download it?

Client upgrade to version 2021 is the last option.

thanks you Eric

I'm here to help ensure you're able to restore the Accountant's Copy to your Enterprise 2021, eric33.

The client and accountant should ideally be using the same version or year of QuickBooks Desktop when using the Accountant's Copy feature. We can still work on the Accountant's Copy with a different version as long as the version difference is less than one year and the accountant has a more recent version.

Let's get the file updated by doing the following:

  1. Open your version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. At the top menu bar, click File and select Open or Restore Company.
  3. Select Open a company file then Next.
  4. Highlight your data file then select Open.
  5. Read the info in the Update Company File for New Version pane. Check the box to signify you understand, then select Update Now.
  6. Follow the instructions on how to back up your file. Note where you save your file.
  7. When You are about to open a company file using a newer version of QuickBooks...Do you want to continue? appears, select Yes.

Let us now return to your client's desktop version and restore the file. To learn more about how Accountant's Copy works, check out this article: Use the Accountant's Copy. This includes information on restoring the file as well as other workflows we can use.

I want to make sure you're on the right track, so please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help you. Have a good one, eric33.
