We e-filed 1099s, one had an incorrect amount. We need to correct the amount. How do I fill a 1096 and 1099 corrected? Can I hand write them and mail them in? Is that it?

Is there a specific place I can fill out this form if we cant handwrite it? The difference is about $2500.

I'll make sure you'll be able to submit the corrected 1099 in QuickBooks Online (QBO). 

 

Yes, handwritten forms are acceptable. Also, you can print a new paper form to amend it. IRS requires pre-printed forms, and you can order them.

 

 Then, you can file the amended form by following the steps below:

 

  1. Order 1099-NEC IRS forms online at IRS Online Ordering for Information Returns and Employer Returns.
  2. Fill out the 1099-NEC form and make sure to enter the correct Social Security Number.
  3. Tick the Corrected box.
  4. Once done, mail the form to the IRS.

 

Please refer to the IRS general Instructions for Certain Information Returns for the information that you'll need to prepare. Additionally, you can visit this link for more details about this process: How to correct or change 1099s in QuickBooks.

 

On the other hand, I'd like to let you know that based on the IRS's most recent publication on Form 1096, those that file their 1099-MISC forms electronically (such as with Intuit's E-file service) do not need to submit 1096.

The 1099 NEC can be handwritten when it is filled out and corrected? Or does it need to be printed? We only have on 1099NEC that needs corrected. I can just mail this correction? How do I know if it is received by the IRS?

Let me provide insights on how you can re-submit a corrected 1099 form, @veronicasanders.

 

Although handwritten forms are acceptable, they must be completely legible and accurate to avoid processing errors. However, I suggest working directly with the IRS for more instructions. You can use these IRS instructions to correct or change 1099s in QuickBooks. Once the error is corrected, you'll need to provide the corrected return to the recipient or contractor yourself.
