I upgraded my QB desktop from 2016 to 2018 last year because QB was lagging horribly. Well, the problem has not gotten better, in fact it's worse. When I was still within our free support period, I called for help, they couldn't help. They told me to be sure to update windows often.
I run a small moving company with only 8 employees. I have about five years of books on this account and my accountant says there is no way my database should be too big. Any ideas? It takes me about a full minute to enter one transaction that should take 15secs. Payroll is a nightmare as well as reconciling my accounts as it takes forever due to the lag.

Jen D, Thank you! I ran the diagnostic tool and so far, so good. I would print the labels, but I'm not sure how.
Finally I can work efficiently!
I'm so very glad to hear the diagnostic tool put the Quick back in your Books, @Warlock!
Please reach out to me here if there's every anything I can do to help you succeed. Thanks for dropping in, wishing you a fantastic rest of your day.
I simply downloaded the tool from the link in this article, closed Quickbooks, ran the tool (took about 5 minutes) and then restarted computer (Win 10). Other than a cryptic message (you will have to register your ...) that I ignored, everything went smoothly during the repair, and my QB is now running fast again.
Previously there were 20 second delays while opening and closing windows.
Thanks folks !!
Hoping you can help with my Desktop Pro 2019. Ever since upgrading to 19 it has been awful. I have ran the tool and it helps for a few hours then its back at timing out and taking forever to do anything. I decided to upgrade my PC last month to see if that was the issue but it wasn't. Is there something else to look at with this issue? Any help is appreciated.
Mark
Hi there, @mmad10.
Thank you for reaching to the Community.
There are some possible reasons why your QuickBooks is performing slow. There could be a Large file amount, we can cut down the size of your company file.
Though, we need to make sure we meet the system requirements:
Please come back to the Community if you have other questions in QuickBooks. I'm here to lend a hand. Have a great day!
Hello! Please provide instructions for cutting down the large files if you will. On the "server" PC that hosts QB 2019 it runs adequately. ON the second PC.. exact same type of computer, it takes almost 2 full minutes to open a file. I followed the instructions above and just like Mmad10, that only worked for one company file, then returned back to it's slothfulness. Productivity is at an all time low when I need it to just be regular. Is there more information to assist me.
Thanks, Ally
Hi there, AllyH.
Since you've already followed the instructions above and the problem continues to occur, I suggest using the Condense Data utility. This helps streamline your company data file.
Here are some valid reasons to Condense:
You have a large data file.
You are nearing a list limit.
You have upgraded all your hardware.
Your accountant and your technical support have discussed other options and are willing to proceed with Condensing.
Follow the steps below on how run Condense Data Utility:
1. Click the File menu.
2. Select Utilities and choose Condense Data.
3. Click the first radio button as shown below. Take note that the system will advise you of the approximate reduction in your file.
4. Hit Next.
Please check this article for additional information above and how to run a report to determine which transactions it will not condense: Use the Condense Data utility.
You may refer to this article on how to resolve issues with the performance of QuickBooks Desktop: Resolve QuickBooks Desktop performance issues: Manage your data file.
Please know that you're always welcome to post if you have any other concerns. Wishing you and your business continued success.

Q: Does QB INSTALL DIAGNOSTIC TOOL Need to be run on EVERY PC?
We run QB 2018 PREMIER on 4 desktops - hosted on a server. (QB2018 PREMIER is on the Server Running WINDOWS SERVER 2016)
We complained about Speed to Tech Support in Dec. who said our Company file was TOO LARGE (660Mb). We started out this year with just our imported lists. Company File size: 15 Mb.
PCs still were TEDIOUSLY Slow. I found this thread and ran on Windows 10 machine. It seemed to help. Older WIN7 Machines appear to be better too, even though I didn't run Tool on them.
Do I need to run QB DIAGNOSTIC TOOL On ALL PCS & SERVER? (will it work on all OS?)
Hello, @Victory2.
We're glad to have you in the Community. Let's see if we need to run a QB Diagnostic Tool on all PC's.
The reason why QuickBooks Desktop could be running slow on all computers is that the host computer has the company file set up incorrectly. If the file is set up incorrectly, then this will allow latency when sharing across the network. Here's a link that can help you determine if the file is correct.
I recommend to ensure that the file is set up correctly before we run the Diagnostic Tool on all computers.
Feel free to reply, if you have any other questions. Have a great rest of your week!
Try open the sample file and notice for any different. Then you may consider to condense your file to reduce your data file size.
Another option, follow these troubleshoot steps:
Hope it helps.
I have the same problem... but I am running on a Mac Desktop version. Is there a diagnostic tool I can use for Mac? What the trouble shooting steps for Mac?
The Diagnostic Tool can only be used for the Windows version,jbennett411.
For now, we don't have a similar tool for Mac. You can follow these steps to resolve the program's performance issue:
If you're on a multi-user setup for Mac, follow the recommend steps in this article to help with the performance issue: Troubleshoot multi-user issues for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac

You guys have got to do something about this program hanging up all the time. Ive done all the reboots, updates (windows) and tool box things. It works great for a short time then its right back at it. yes I have all the system requirements and my file is only 60MB. Someone please contact me to help diagnose. This has gotten rediculous and I know Im not the only one on here experiencing the same thing. I cant get anything done without closing it down, running the tool again and starting over. There has to be something to fix this. For me it only started when i updated to Pro 2019 Desktop.
Hi there, @mmad10.
You can get help with a diagnosis of your computer by requesting a callback with our Desktop Support Team. They'll be able to start a screen share with you and go through all the major and minor steps to fix the slow issue you're having. The steps below will show you how:
One of our support agents will be in contact with you shortly. While you wait, I suggest having your IT department look into your computer and see if they can find any reasons as to why the system is slowing down. This will help in the process of determining why Desktop is being slow.
Feel free to let me know how the conversation goes below. I'm always here to help.
Ok I may have a solution...finally! Well, in my case anyways. So every since updating to Desktop Pro 2019 it has been awful and the system hangs up like crazy. At least 3 reboots every time Im working in it. So I started thinking the other day that I wonder if since I was storing my company file on a USB if that had anything to do with it. Well, it had everything to do with it. Ever since I moved the main file to the computer itself it has been life changing. I was working off USB since I travel some and just wanted to kept the file mobile. I also confirmed this with another company I work with. We bought a brand new PC and Pro 2020. I put the file on a USB first and it was terrible. Once I figured out about moving the file to the main PC it reacted the same. Once I moved the file to the PC itself it was perfect and great again.
Hope this helps. I was on the phone with QB tech support and no one asked me about where the file was. They wanted me to rename the old files and reinstall the new software. This would have been a simple fix for them if they would have asked. So glad I figured this out.
I'm a single user and I recently had the same problem. None of the suggested tools worked for me. After many hours of frustration I found that under File/Utilities/Shared Access had been granted. I'm not sure how this was enabled but by removing that access Quickbooks came back up to full speed. Hope this helps someone else.
Do you have a tool for Chromebooks? I'm having the same problems...
Let's make sure you'll be able to fix your issue, MaxFidge.
In general, the only main difference between Chromebooks and laptops or other computers is the operating system. While laptops run on the most popular operating system Windows, Chromebooks run in web-based Chrome OS. And yet both works on the same tool. You'll want to make sure that you're computer meets the system requirements so it would run smoothly and without any issues. To do this, follow the steps below:

Hi there, @Shelby31.
Thanks for taking the time to follow along with the thread and sharing your concerns.
To clarify, have you tried using the QuickBooks Diagnostic Tool mentioned by my colleagues above? If not, let's follow the steps provided by MariaSoledadG. If you have ran the Diagnostic Tool and you're still having issues, do you mind to answer a few questions for me? This way, I can narrow down where the issue comes from and let you know how we can get it resolved.
Any additional details that you can share would be great. That way, I can get a clear understanding of where your issue comes from.
I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your reply and look forward to chatting with you soon. Take care!
How big is your file size? Are you running a 17 years data file?
