An e-check transaction shows delayed as the status. What does this mean?

An e-check transaction shows delayed as the status.

Processing time for e-check transactions causes the varied delayed status, Gmadden1. Let me provide additional information about it.

When you start using a QuickBooks Payments account for the first time, there will be a delay of up to five business days. These deposits take longer as we set up your account. Once the setup is complete, rest assured that you will be on regular funding time.

Moreover, if you have been using the QuickBooks Payment, the processing time is influenced by the time of day. The deposits will be available in your bank account the following day if you've completed the check transaction before 3 PM Pacific time. On the other hand, if the processing occurs after 3 PM PT, the deposit will take two business days to be completed.

Know that if you're using a free ACH Bank Transfer payment deposit takes about 2 - 7 business days.

Additionally, I've included some helpful resources that offer more details on delayed payment reviews:

An e-check transaction shows delayed as the status.

I just started to notice that some of my E-check processed transactions show "Delayed" status immediately after processing the E-check.  Others show "Pending" in status.  This started a few weeks ago.  I use 2024 Desktop QB Pro to run the E-checks.  Have been doing that for years and never seen "Delayed" status for any of my transactions before.  Contacted Intuit and was given different reasons by different reps.  Seems like no one knows for sure what's going on.  One rep said that on July 15th Intuit made a change it now it takes longer to transfer money (up to 5 days).  The second rep said that it's on my customer's end and Intuit has nothing to do with it.  Just today I processed 2 different E-checks and the first showed "Delayed" status immediately (within seconds), second showed "Pending" status.  What's going on?  Can someone help me to figure out what's causing "Delayed" status for some of my E-checks and not the others?

I appreciate your detailed response regarding your concern, GenZer. I'll ensure you stay informed about the status of your payment.

Changes in your account or your customer's banking information could affect eChecks processing. This could be why some of them are on Delayed or Pending status. Please ensure the correct account information before processing them.

However, if the bank information is correct and no changes are made to it. Getting in touch with our QuickBooks Desktop Support again would be best. They can conduct further investigation on your eCheck status.

Here's how to reach out to them efficiently:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help/Contact Us.
  3. Select Contact Us.
  4. Give a brief description of your issue, then choose Continue.
  5. Sign in to your Intuit account and select Continue.
  6. Click on Continue with my account.
  7. Choose Chat with us or Have us call you.

You can also visit this article detailing the eCheck process and related information that can help you: Process checks in QBDT.

Thank you for your reply, however, I have contacted Intuit 3 times already, twice on the phone, once in chat.

All three gave different answers so I don't see how contacting Intuit 4th time will be of any help.  Again, this "Delay" status started showing up few week ago.  I never had this happen before in over 10 years I've been processing E-checks with QB.  In fact, I have a customer that I processed 2 E-checks a month ago without any issues and when I processed E-check third time for this same customer a week ago (balance payment), this "Delay" status showed up. Customer's bank info was still the same. I did end up getting money in 6 days but still why the "Delay" if it's the same customer?  There is has to be a reason for these "Delays", if only I could get an explanation as to why.

What's interesting to me is in the last 2 weeks I have processed (2) E-checks for a new customer and both times status showed "Pending" immediately after processing and money received within 2-3 days as before.  However, (2) of my other new customers I processed E-checks for on July 26th and (1) yesterday showed "Delayed" status immediately after processing.  Could it be that Intuit now has a list of banks which they are delaying ACH transactions immediately?  Otherwise, how else can this be explained when transactions get status "Delayed" immediately?

An Update:

Finally I got an answer from QB as to what's going on with all these "Delays" after processing E-checks.

The explanation given today by Melvin was "We are aware of this issue and working to fix it".  Apparently it was a problem on QB end.  My guess, after more people called QB about this same issue, they finally decided to look into it and realized there is a problem that needs fixing.  I just hope they'll get it fixed soon...

This just happened to me and they have "delayed" 30 transactions that have been recurring for the past 3 years and aren't funding them for 7 days!  I'm on the phone with support right now and they're saying that my agreement says they "have the right to delay transactions at any time".  So I guess I'm just supposed to say thanks, this is working as you intended?  Why don't you just hold onto my money for a week?  Keep increasing prices twice a year though.

So, I called Intuit support 4 times about this "Delay" status issue in the last 2 weeks and got 4 different answers with the last being, they are working on it to fix it.  Just processed another E-check this morning and it showed "Delayed" immediately.  So apparently either Intuit is still trying to fix the issue or they outright lied to me.  I'm beginning to suspect that Intuit started to hold funds longer in order to earn some interest on it. Anyway, I'm now searching for another ACH processing merchant... Might have to sign up with my bank to process E-checks (apparently they have this service available)

So, after doing some  more research for an alternative ACH processing company, I'm signing up with my own bank that charges $30/month and $1.75 per transaction.  And since it's the bank I deal with, funds will go directly from my customer's bank into my bank account without the need of the funds getting stuck somewhere in between (third party merchant). Hopefully, this will speed things up.  Also, Intuit is planning to raise rates again so 30/1.75 doesn't sound bad at all.  In addition, next year I'll try not to renew my 2024 desktop QB ($999 new price for next year). The only reason I renewed it this year so I could do ACH transactions.

Un Update:

Finally got the answer why this "Delay" status gets assigned immediately after processing E-checks.

Yesterday I was told that on July 15th QB changed how they fund money.  If you manually key-in E-check  information, you get "Delayed" status and it'll take 5 business days to get your money.  If you send the invoice and let customer pay the invoice then you get money faster within 2-3 days.  They call it an improvement to decrease bounced checks and fraudulent transactions.  Go figure...  Anyway, I'm in the process of switching to my own bank to process E-checks..

I have been using quickbook desktop for several years and my ach payments have never been delayed until about 6 weeks and now 3 to 4 of the accunts are delayed every week. Why the change. These are not new accounts. I have been doing them for quite some time and now all of a sudden delayed status?

I know some information about delayed e-check in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Let me share it with you.

ACH payments entered manually may experience delays due to additional security checks. I recommend visiting the Merchant Service Center to check the record and the status of your processed payments across all your QuickBooks products. Here's how:

  1. Sign in to the Merchant Service Center.
  2. On the homepage, hit Activities & Reports and click Deposits.
  3. Choose the date range in the Dates field and select Search.

It will display all your daily deposits, including the totals and the individual payments associated with each deposit. To view the individual payments within a deposit, click the downward arrow in the Fee column.

  1. From the homepage, select the Activity & Reports tab and All Statements.
  2. See the month you want to see and pick View. Or select Download to get a PDF for your records.

Successful deposits are labeled as Funded in the Status column. If there are issues with a deposit, you will see Withheld or Batch Deposit Returned in the Status column. Use the arrow in the Fee column to review details.

For additional assistance, I recommend contacting our support team, who can thoroughly investigate this matter. Our support team possesses the necessary expertise and tools to assist you. To reach us, follow these steps:

  1. In QuickBooks, click Help and hit QuickBooks Desktop Help/Contact Us.
  2. Select Contact Us, enter a brief explanation of your concern, and choose Continue.
  3. Sign in with your Intuit account and tap Continue, then Continue with my account.
  4. Put the code that we emailed to you and tick Continue.
  5. After that, decide between chat with us or Have us call you.

Read my previous post. After calling QB about this "Delay" issue and getting 4 different answers they finally said that on July 15th, QB changed the way they fund the money.  From July 15th any "manually-keyed" E-checks will take 5  business days (1 week) to process.  However, when you send an invoice to your customer and let customer pay the invoice, the funds will be available sooner, 2-3 business days.  QB made it sound like it was an improvement designed to safeguard your account.
