How do I refund a credit card payment that has already been deposited?

I can guide you in processing a refund for credit card payment in QuickBooks Online (QBO), jraemy25.

 

We have the ability to generate a refund receipt to process the deposited payment refund. Before that, take note of these requirements when you issue credit card refunds.

 

  • Credit card refunds can only go back to the original card used for the payment. You might need to contact your customer to verify this info.
  • You can only refund up to the amount of the original sale.
  • You can only issue credit card refunds within 90 days of the sale.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the +New button.
  2. Under Customers, select Refund receipt.
  3. Choose the customer from the drop-down arrow.
  4. Fill out the fields with the same info on the original sale.
  5. Select Credit card from the Payment method drop-down arrow.
  6. From the Refund from drop-down arrow, select the account you want to issue the refund.
  7. Select Save and close.

Hello.  There was an accidental refund to a customer's credit card for a payment on the invoice.  How do I show that payment is still owed for the invoice? 

 

Invoice 3111 was paid for with a credit card on 11/2/22.  An accidental refund was given back to the customer on a credit card on 11/7/22.  How do I show payment for the invoice is still owed?  (Accounts receivables somehow need to be adjusted too?)  QBs showing customer no longer owes for this invoice, but they do still owe a payment. 

 

To further complicate things, the accidental credit card refund is batched with other payments.  Making it difficult to match transactions.  

 

$(508.44) accidental refund

$34.16 invoice pmt

$234.00 invoice pmt

$734.17 invoice pmt

$44.84 invoice pmt

 

I would really appreciate some help on this one.  I have spend 3 days with QBs on the phone using screen sharing, and so far, it has not been solved.  Be my hero?

Now will this actually refund the funds or just create a refund receipt and recorded jt accurately within QuickBooks?

In your case, if you're referring to the answer of my colleague Maybelle_S about the steps in processing a refund for credit card payment in QBO. Well,' I agree with you that it will just create a refund receipt to record it accurately in QuickBooks.

 

However, if you want to refund the funds, follow the steps below. If you have QuickBooks Payments, you can refund a customer who paid you with a credit card right from the sales receipt, invoice, or associated payment.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the Sales tab, then select the All Sales tab.
  2. Find and select the sales receipt, invoice, or payment you want to apply for a refund.
  3. In the footer, select More, then select Refund.
  4. Review the transaction info.
  5. Then select Save and Close.

Hi, I also wanted to get more information on refunds. We issued a refund through QuickBooks Payments via credit card.

How can I confirm that the refund has been processed, aside from checking the bank transactions? Is there any possibility that the amount was not disbursed?

Let me outline the steps to help you confirm that the refund has been processed and not disbursed in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

 

To confirm that the refund has been processed, aside from checking the bank transactions and confirming that the amount was not disbursed. You can check the status of the refund transaction in your QuickBooks Account:

 

  1. At the gear icon, click Account and Settings.
  2. Choose the Payments tab.
  3. Click Manage account.
  4. Go to Activity and Reports.

 

From there you can check the condition of the refund in the STATUS column.
