Join nowI am a user of QB Essentials. I am trying to help my son on his new Quickbooks Simple Start plan. I am stuck, unable to enter a Fixed Asset in the Chart of accounts. He doesn't need do any Fixed Asset Accounting, just wants to create a Fixed Asset account for a website of his business.
So I go to Chart of Accounts and then click on "New", to enter a new category (Simple Start wants to call Accounts "categories" I guess).
A screen come up where I select the category to put this new account under. There are Current Assets, Income, Expenses, etc, But there are not Fixed Assets. BUT, there is a "Expensive Items (Assets)" category. I select that.
Then I can presented with a search box. And it let's me search from categories that I am supposed to choose from--none of these categories are for an "expensive item" or fixed asset.
Stuck. No way to save an "Expensive Item" category (account).
I've spent almost 90 minutes in chat with a QB rep. It was a nightmare. She'd apparently never used Simple Start. It took the entire call for her to get the developer team to say that it's an ongoing investigation. And no idea when it will be fixed.
Then she told me that I should call tomorrow to help expedite the issue. WTF?
So, my son has no idea when he will be able to sue the plan he is paying for.
I am posting here, because I don't have a lot of confidence in the rep I was talking to. Does anyone know anything about this?
If a Support Rep here is interested in helping, my chat reference # is [removed]. It's quite long.
Solved! Go to Solution.
I spent some time on phone support with someone, finally, who knew what she was doing. It was a simple solution: Switch to Accountants View. That's all I had to do. It gave me a better interface which allowed me to enter a fixed asset.
Thanks for allowing QuickBooks to serve you with your business needs, markfleming.
As I've replicated here on my end since you were not able to add the fixed asset. You can log in and log out of the account. If you're still unable to enter a Fixed Asset in the Chart of accounts, it might be your regular browser is experiencing some issues. I recommend logging in to your QuickBooks account using a private browser. This is to rule out the possibility of a webpage issue, and private browsing doesn't store local files or cache.
Use these keyboard shortcuts based on the browser you're using:
If it works in incognito, I recommend clearing the cache of your regular browser. This removes the history or log of sites so you can start with a clean slate. You can check this article to see the steps: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online.
If the steps above didn't work, use another supported browser as alternatives.
For additional information, you can click on this article: Add an account to your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.
On the other hand, I've got here a reference that you can read through to give you more tips about the accounts that you can add to the system, and on what are their functions:

Ignore.
The chat rep also initially blamed the browser, until an hour later the dev team told her it's a known issue.
I'm supplying a link to watch a video screenshot of me trying to add an "Expensive Item", to no avail. The chat rep, through screen sharing, watched me do this, and was also unable to guide me through completing a "Expensive Item" category (account).
My son is telling me that he'll just go to Xero instead, but I told him Ito hold on to see if anyone at QB can tell me when this going to be fixed.

Did a bot choose your solution to my problem? It must have since it's not the right solution. I presented the correct solution in my final comment in this thread. It read:
"I spent some time on phone support with someone, finally, who knew what she was doing. It was a simple solution: Switch to Accountants View. That's all I had to do. It gave me a better interface which allowed me to enter a fixed asset."
MODERATOR: Please change the correct solution to what I wrote. Yours is not correct.
This is NOT THE CORRECT ANSWER. I told you the correct answer, which you'll see in my last comment.

MODERATOR: Please show my answer as correct, and not this silly one about the browser.
