COA fails to display a/c numbers even after enabling the display a/c number and checking the box to display numbers in Advanced setting. What else needs to be done?

Thanks for your time posting your concern here in the Community, @QB-Advisor.

I'd also feel the same when something isn't working. Rest assured, I'm here to lend a hand on how we can get around this concern about the Chart of Accounts failing to display the account numbers in QuickBooks Online.

Since the filter doesn't work on your end, please proceed with the troubleshooting steps below. Thus, too much historical data from the browser causes unusual behavior like what you encounter with the account numbers.

For us to determine if this is a browser-related issue, I suggest using a private or incognito window. To save you time, use either of these keyboard shortcuts depending on what browser you’re using:

  • Ctrl + Shift + N for Google Chrome browser
  • Ctrl + Shift + P for Mozilla Firefox & Microsoft Edge browsers
  • Command + Shift + N for Safari browser

Then, perform the same task again. If it works fine, you can go back to your original browser and clear its cache to start fresh or use another supported and up-to-date browser to narrow down the results.

From there, we can reassign the account numbers. I'll show you how:

  1. Go to Settings, then select Chart of accounts.
  2. Click Batch edit or the pencil icon above the Action column.
  3. From the Number column, add account numbers.
  4. Once you’re done, tick Save.

I've added this article here for more detailed steps and additional insights with using account numbers in your Chart of Accounts: Use account numbers in your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

Also, if you need help setting up and adding accounts to your chart of accounts, check out this helpful resource: Add an account to your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

Please feel free to get in touch with me here and keep me posted on your progress. We're always here to guide and assist whenever you need help. Have a good one!

It does add the account number column in front of the Name column, but the account numbers are neither extracted, loaded nor visible after switching to the chrome browser and using the incognito window as recommended.
