How can I import the general ledger in excel format to Quickbooks?

Hello edgar.tamayo,

I'm glad you posted!

When you import a general ledger from an excel file, you can only bring in account balances and details; individual transactions can't be imported. To do this, you can click on the Gear icon in the upper-right to open the company menu, then click on Import Data. From there, select Accounts and follow the prompts (you can download a sample file there as well to make sure your formatting is correct) to import the list of accounts and their balances.

If you need an import solution that links transactions, please refer to the Intuit Marketplace for third-party developers. You can visit this article: https://apps.intuit.com/.

You can go to Import Limitations for more details.

Please let me know if you need anything else. I'm always happy to help!

How can I import the general ledger in excel format to Quickbooks?

I’ve just posted a similar question of my own - I need to get a complete GL, with transactions, from QB into QB, so that I can work with the data. I’ve just clicked a number of times on your link for Intuit Marketplace, and it says it can’t find that server.

How can I import the general ledger in excel format to Quickbooks?

I do not see a column in the sample file for Account Balances. I only see Account Number, Account Name, Type and Detail Type. Am I missing something? (My company uses another system to book journal entries, but we want the month end balances in QB to leverage the reporting capabilities.

How can I import the general ledger in excel format to Quickbooks?

Hello there, @121271.

Let me guide you through the steps of importing accounts into QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Under Tools, choose Import data.
  3. From the Import Data window, select Chart of accounts.
  4. Click Browse, then choose the file you want to upload.
  5. Select "Next" and then "Map your data."
  6. Click Next, then enter the Account NameType, and Detail Type in the Import window.
  7. Hit Import.

Additionally, importing the general ledger data is unavailable. We can manually enter them instead. Then, ensure you turn on the class tracking feature to track income or expenses by segment.

You can also read this article which provides FAQs about importing data to QuickBooks Online: Importing Data.

Keep me posted if you have other questions about importing data into QuickBooks. I'll be happy to assist you again. Have a blessed day!

Not seeing the option to import account balances is quite unusual, 2KAllStar.

We can perform some troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue. The performance of the (QBO) system can sometimes be due to browser-related matters. Especially when the browser is full of frequently accessed pages, you can log in to your account using a private browser (incognito). Here's how:

  • Press Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome)
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox)
  • Control Option (Safari)

If it works, go back to your default browser and clear its cache and cookies. This is to refresh the system and remove the older data that caused the issue. You can also check other supported browsers by QuickBooks.

However, if the issue persists, I'd recommend to manually enter balances per account. This way, you can enter the balances of your account.

I encourage Reconciling your accounts in QuickBooks. This is to ensure your books are accurate.

You can always leave a comment if you need further assistance in entering your balances. Have a great weekend!
