Every bill we enter in our system for our company is assigned to a Customer:Job. I need to create a report that shows a list of all of the bills that we have paid for a specific job. The report that comes closest to what I need is the Check Detail report, which is under the Banking category on the Reports menu. When I run that report, it shows all of the payments we have made for all invoices for the date range selected. Underneath each payment on the report, it shows the Customer and Job from the original bill that each payment was made for. However this report includes all payments made for ALL jobs. I want to filter by a specific job so that the report only includes payments made to bills that were assigned to a specific job. On the Filters tab, why is there not an option to filter by Job?
Hi there, springvalleyhomes.
Currently, there's no option to filter by a specific job in the Check Detail report so that the report will only include payments made to bills that were assigned to a specific job.
However, I suggest pulling up the Job Profitability Details report. From there, you can filter to a specif job and show the payments made to bills that were assigned to a specific job.
Here's how:

Please keep me posted on how it goes. I want to make sure everything you're all set with this concern. Have a great week.
Thanks so much for the quick reply and the very thorough and easy to follow details with screen shots. However this option does not give me what I need. The first problem is that the final report includes all bills entered for a specific job whether or not the bill has been paid. I need the report to only include paid bills. Secondly, I need the additional information that the Check Detail report provides, specifically the check numbers and dates of the payments.
Thanks for getting back to us, springvalleyhomes.
I appreciate you explaining how it would help you out. As referenced by my peer above, the option to filter the Check Detail report by a specific job is currently unavailable.
As a workaround, you can pull up and run the Check Detail and the Job Profitability Detail report and export them into Excel. From there, you have the option to combine the information into one report.
Here's how to export the reports:
You can follow the same steps to export the Job Profitability Detail report. Once exported, you have the option to combine all the information you need.

Thanks for the suggestion about exporting. But can you explain more about where you say, once exported, I have the option to combine all the information I need? Do you have instructions on how to combine these reports?
Hi springvalleyhomes,
You're right. At the moment, the closest report that can provide the data you need is the Check Detail. We can export it to Excel and manually (copy and paste) rearrange the data in a way that the payment with the date, the check number, and the respective bills will be grouped under each job.
I got a sample below, where I highlighted some of the things I've changed so you can easily follow.
About your question on why there isn't a "per job" filter on Check Detail, the answer is the base information of the report comes from the check transactions. The payees of these checks are not the jobs, but the company name or the customers of those jobs. This is why there isn't an option to do so.
I'm just around if you have additional questions. You can also check out the Resource Hub that my colleague shared above if you want to see more references for QuickBooks Desktop. Have a good one!
Thanks for the additional reply and example to effectively illustrate your suggestion. The quickness of the replies to my question in an effort to help are quite impressive! :) Unfortunately in our business, we have hundreds of transactions for each job, so manually copying and pasting each one would be impractically laborsome. I may need to do some experimenting into whether some Excel macros could be set up to automate that process or something. But it would sure be nice if that large investment of time was not necessary if the report could simply filter by job. I understand what you are saying about the base information of the report being derived from the check transactions rather than the invoice transactions, but since the jobs are included with each line, that information is still clearly pulled from the invoice for each item on the report, so it would seem it should be possible to simply exclude those lines that don't match a chosen job. I have a bit of a background in programming and databasing, and a simple SQL "join" clause comes to mind for those who may know what I am talking about. :) Is there any chance that the ability to filter by job might be a feature added in the future? I've got to think there has to be many other businesses with this same need that we have.
I know it's tedious to copy and paste the transactions manually, Springvalleyhomes.
Although, for now it's the only way since we don't have the feature yet. I suggest sending feedback directly to our engineers. We're taking notes of our customers' insights and ideas. Most of our new features came from most of our users. Here's how:
Our software engineers will review this and might be added in future updates.
