Non-taxable sales

When I ran my Sales Tax Liability Report for last month, I have an amount showing under Non-taxable sales. It does let me click on it, but doesn't give me any details of what that amount consists of exactly. It only takes me to a list of taxable transactions. How can I find out what this amount consists of? Or from what invoice? To save time, I have tried going to Taxable Sales Details and customizing the report to show only Non-taxable customers or products. It is still not revealing where this amount came from. Currently on hold with "experts". It's been an hour so I thought I would reach out here as well....

Non-taxable sales

Thank you for sharing such detailed information about your concern, bman.

When you run the Sales Tax Liability report or Taxable Sales Details, you should be able to click on the amount under Non-Taxable to see the details. Since you're experiencing the opposite, we can perform some basic troubleshooting to isolate this case.

This issue can be cache-related. That said, let's use a private browser like incognito to rule this out. Below are some keyboard shortcuts that you can follow depending on which browser you're using:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P

Then, run the Sales Tax Liability report or the Taxable Sales Details and see if you're able to click on the amount to show the details. If it works, you may want to clear the browsing history of your regular web browser. This will remove previously stored browsing data that might have caused the issue. Otherwise, you can try using other supported browsers to be thorough.

Non-taxable sales

Hi bman,

Hope you’re doing great. I wanted to see how everything is going about the non-taxable sales in the Sales Tax Liability report that you had the other day. Was it resolved? Do you need any additional help or clarification? If you do, just let me know. I’d be happy to help you at any time.

Looking forward to your reply. Have a pleasant day ahead!

Non-taxable sales

I tried this in multiple browsers both in regular and private mode.  While it is incredibly disconcerting to know that I could run a report for a client and receive different data depending on the browser used, it iequally frustrating that there is not a reliable way to see what data is comprising the "Non-Taxable" figures on the Sales Tax Liability Report.  Like previously said, clicking on that brings up a list of TAXABLE sales, not NONTAXABLE sales, which of course is complete incorrect.

Non-taxable sales

I appreciate all the effort you've put into this.

Currently, these are only the available customization in the Sales Tax Liability report in QuickBooks Online. As we value your suggestions, I recommend sending your feedback to our Product Development Team. Here's how to send feedback:

  1. Click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Feedback under Profile.
  3. Share your feedback.
  4.  Click Next to submit.

Our product engineers will consider your suggestions, and you can always check the status of your request through this link: QuickBooks Online Customer Feedback

As a workaround, you can pull up the Sales by Customer Detail. Customize the columns and add the Tax AmountTax Name, and Taxable Amount.

  1. Go to Reports.
  2. Search for the Sales by Customer Detail on the search bar.
  3. Click Customize.
  4. Select the Rows/Columns dropdown.
  5. Choose the Tax AmountTax Name, and Taxable Amount.
  6. Click Run report.

There you have it. All the zero amounts under the columns Taxable Amount and Tax Amount are non-taxable.

You can utilize this article for future reference: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.

If you have any other QuickBooks-related questions, please post them in the Community. We are always available and eager to assist you with your inquiries. Have a wonderful day.

Are you serious right now? This is completely unacceptable as an answer.
This was the primary ways we used to find discrepancies in our sales tax every month in QuickBooks Desktop.
And QuickBooks Online has the option to click on a BROKEN link and you want to have us give regular feedback?

Is there any other way to sort for "Non Taxable Sales" line items?

With all of the "Advanced Reporting" capabilities that the software promotes?

The list of reasons to switch back to Desktop is growing.

Don't reply to this saying that I should "Leave Feedback by clicking on the gear icon" That is such a cop-out non-answer.

HEY!

I found a solution.

Taxable Sales Detail Report

Customize Report
Report Period -> Last Month (Or month of Sales Tax Liability Report you're looking for)
Filter -> Product/Service Taxable: Non-Taxable

The final total = the amount that is listed as Non Taxable that show up in the Sales Tax row.

I don't know why it's not showing the Non-Taxable information in the Exempt row, but I didn't want it to anyway, so I'm ignoring that for now.

Thanks for nothing @Charies_M and @JamesAndrewM. You're useless and unhelpful, and have done nothing but waste everyone's time.

I tried that, and had tried that previously, but it did not work for me.  That report listed only the Non-Taxable items from one line of my Liability Report (no idea how or why QB chose that one line and not the rest).  I have size more lines that include Non-Taxable totals on my Liability Report but none of those transactions showed up on the detail.  Thanks for the suggestion though.

JEgolf I totally agree! QBO is TERRIBLE and I wish it would go away. Your idea to find the detail on the Non-Taxable sales mostly worked for me, so thank you! It for sure got me farther than my phone call to the QBO 'expert'. It should not be this hard.

sfvaughn: the same thing happened to me! I got two out of three lines that worked. But that is closer than anything else I have tried...

Non-taxable sales

Today I ran the Sales Tax Liability Report, I have a column with Non-Taxable Sales, I am able to click on it

and it opens and gives me a list of the invoices involved in the total Non-Taxable Sales..BUT every invoice is taxable and has had sales tax charged and paid.  I went to each invoice individually to verify that the tax box is checked and appropriate sales tax rates, they are correct. They are not non taxable items, customer is not exempt or non taxable, how & why would they show up in the non-taxable column?  I am at a loss.  This is like an auto audit flag!! Which no one wants.  I have never run into this this.

Occasionally I have mistakenly clicked non taxable but left the sales tax rate there instead of choosing the exempt reason.  When I would do the report I may have 4 or 5 out of 2000 invoices. Which was always easy correction.  I cannot figure this out. I've used QB for 27years this is my 2nd year of QBO

Non-taxable sales

Hello, Dawn. You can follow these steps to isolate the behavior.

Step 1: Access your QuickBooks account in a private browser. Using a private browser window can help determine if the problem you're experiencing in QuickBooks is due to your browser settings or extensions.

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Option + P

Step 2: Clear Browser Cache. Over time, your browser's cache gathers temporary files and data from the websites you browse. Clearing it can boost your browser's speed and overall performance by lightening the load of stored data.

Step 3: Try Another Browser or Device. Sometimes, the issue may be browser-specific. Try accessing QuickBooks from a different web browser or device.

If you have additional concerns about QuickBooks reports or any other related activities, please leave a comment below. I'll be around to respond and assist you. Take care and stay safe.
