I am putting the check forms face up in the top drawer.  Should I be using the bypass tray instead?  I don't understand because I have been working here for several months and the checks lined up previously??  Now they are not.

Hello, @orccsec.

There are several reasons why your paychecks were not aligned when printing. Let me share some information to help resolve this concern without bypassing the paper tray in your printer.

First, let's make sure you've set up your payroll check printing preferences. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear Icon.
  2. Choose Payroll Settings.
  3. Select the Preferences tab.
  4. Pick Paycheck Printing Settings.
  5. Set how'd you like to print your pay stubs and checks.
  6. Make sure that the Preprinted QuickBooks-compatible check paper is selected.
  7. Click on Align Checks, then follow the instructions on-screen.
    • The check is printing too high
      • Enter a letter that’s after the letter K (L to X) to move the information down.
    • The check is printing too low
      • Enter a letter that’s before the letter K (A to J) to move the information up.
    • The check is printing too far left
      • Enter a number that’s more than 5 (6 to 9) to move the information to the right.
    • The check is printing too far right
      • Enter a number that’s less than 5 (0 to 4) to move the information to the left.
  8. Select the Update Settings button.
  9. Click the Ok button. 4009.GIF

Now, let's make sure that the Adobe Acrobat or Reader installed in your computer is updated to the latest version. Once verified, let's make sure to check the alignment settings in your computer. You can read refer to this article for more detailed steps: Set up alignment for preprinted paycheck.

I am having the same problem. I've gone through the steps you listed several times and my payroll checks are perfect. However, all other checks (pay bills, etc.) are not even close to being aligned. How can we align non-payroll checks?

I've just got all the steps you need in aligning how your checks print, @AMQ!

First, let's make sure the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed.

Then, follow these simple and quick easy steps to set up Print Checks:

  1. Select the Plus icon (+) on the Toolbar.
  2. Under Vendors, choose Print Checks.
    Capture.JPG
  3. At the bottom of the page, select Print setup.
  4. The window changes to Print checks setup. Choose No, continue setup at the bottom of the page. On the next screen, select No, continue setup
  5. Now you’re on Fine-tune alignment. Drag the grid inside the large square to the place where it appears on your printout. This lets QuickBooks figure out how to adjust the alignment.
  6. Select View preview and print sample in the lower left and choose Print at the bottom.
  7. After the sample is printed on plain paper, hold it up to the light against a check and see if the alignment is correct.
  8. If you still need to do some fine tuning, close the sample and then go back to the grid to make adjustments, then print a fresh sample.
  9. Select Finish Setup when your sample’s alignment looks correct.
  10. Apply the following changes. Changes should apply to most printer versions – make changes for the options you see below.
    1. Page Scaling: set to None
    2. Auto-Rotate and Center must not be checked.
    3. Make sure that Choose Paper Source by PDF size is check.
    4. If you’re using Adobe Acrobat, these options are slightly different:
      1. Under Page Size & Handling
        • Select Actual Size
        • Select Choose paper source by PDF size
      2. Under Orientation
        • Select Auto portrait/landscape

Let me also add these article to give you some tips that will help you set up, adjust, or check the printing alignment for all sales forms (estimate, refund receipt, and credit memo) you create in QuickBooks Online:
