We recently updated from QuickBooks Accountant 2008 to QuickBooks Pro 2019 (Windows). Our report list options no longer shows a Balance Sheet by Class option, though Profit & Loss by Class is still available.
When we run a regular Balance Sheet report, Class is not an option in the Show Columns drop down list. Screen shots of both attached.
Is Balance Sheet by Class not available in QuickBooks Pro 2019?

Hello there, Diana27.
The Balance Sheet by Class report is unavailable in QuickBooks Pro 2019. I have a workaround for you. You can pull up the Balance Sheet Detail report. It will show you a class column.
Here's how:
I've attached a screenshot for your reference.
I also suggest sending feedback to have this feature included to our future updates. You can do that by going to Help, clicking Send Feedback Online, then choosing Product Suggestion.

Understood, but we significantly over-purchased prior. When we chose Accountant, we were using QuickBooks to integrate with another app that required Accountant. We have since moved away from that app, and Pro suits our needs in all other ways except the Balance Sheet by Class. Thanks for watching out for us, though.
Sorry for the duplicate reply - it was unclear that my earlier one posted.
Understood, but we significantly overpurchased prior. We had Accountant merely to satisfy the requirements of a 3rd party app that we no longer use. Pro is sufficient for our current needs in all ways except the Balance Sheet by Class.
Hi Kristine,
Thanks for the answer, and the work around. Unfortunately, that isn't quite what we need, as we'd been using the Balance Sheet by Class to track the balance in our checking account for each class, along with a few other balance sheet items. It doesn't look like the detail report provides the same account balance by class functionality.
Best,
Diana

Move your file to Premier. Install Premier Edition as one of the Industry Editions. Example: You want Backorder tracking = install it as Wholesale/Manufacturing, or as Retail. You want the Retitled and relabeled Not For Profit Reports, so install it as NFP Premier.
It was helpful to know that others are having similar issues. We have a lot of customers that are different entities under a specific umbrella company (or office), and this exists for about 10 classes. We have been using the Class to specify the umbrella company, so that we can then run reports by class to show how much business we do with each office. This is a most unhelpful change to a working system.
For instance, when we bill back a specific charge to a customer I was able to enter the customer and the class, now I can't. Please advise as to how I can work around that easily for thousands of entries like this each year.
This is a set up consideration: "We have been using the Class to specify the umbrella company"
That would be Customer Name.
"so that we can then run reports by class to show how much business we do with each office."
That would be Job Name, or subcustomer. Example:
I sell to 5 locations on the University campus, so Customer Name = University. Job Name, which is the provided Hierarchy for customer sublevel = Dorm 1 Hall, Dorm 2 Hall, U-Center Store, Snack Bar and Game Room.
"his is a most unhelpful change to a working system."
This is always how you set up and use Desktop for Customers having sublevels that matter to you and/or them.
"For instance, when we bill back a specific charge to a customer I was able to enter the customer and the class, now I can't."
It's supposed to be Customer and Job. Class is for your Divisional reporting. Example:
Customer name = Property Address
Job name = Tenant
Class name = Commercial or Residential, because you want to track your Financial Operations by type of Activity you own and manage, using P&L by Class and Profitability reporting.
"Please advise as to how I can work around that easily for thousands of entries like this each year."
You didn't tell us why you can no longer enter Class; and Class isn't meant for the function you are using it for.
Please see my attachment.
Thanks for your replies. I've been doing it this way for many years. Its how I was taught, and a bit inherited. I think that would mean a lot of work to create these sub customers. But I will look at it. Would that automatically take care things past?
I just received this reply from @Anonymous and this totally fixed my issue. I hope it helps someone else.
Thanks for joining in the thread, @Cori Aurora.
Allow me to join the conversation and help enter class specification on your transactions.
It appears that you haven't turned on your class tracking yet that's why you can't view this even if you specify the class specification on each of your transactions. Let me provide you with the following steps below to ensure your class tracking is on.
Here's how:
Keep me updated on how it goes. You can also ask further assistance if needed by contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Mac support.

This should guide you in the right direction. I'll also be here to provide further help if you have additional questions about class tracking. Have a good one.
This topic was started by someone using QB Desktop for PC.
You can learn why Customer and Job is meant for your described need, and Class is Not that same function. Mac Desktop users have a resource; have you visited:

Hello,
Is it possible to have balance sheet by Location option in Quickbooks online?
Thank you.
Oz
Jumping in to share how you can do this in the online version, Oz.
The Balance Sheet by Location report isn't available in QBO at the moment. Although, you can customize the existing Balance Sheets and select the locations that you only need in the report. Here's how:

That Answer is for QBO not Desktop !!
Hi there, Comp2tr.
The steps provided by the previous representative is for the customer who's asking if it's possible to have the option of having a balance sheet by location report in QuickBooks Online version. However, if you wish to achieve this using the QuickBooks Desktop version, I'd be more than happy to walk you through the steps below:
Feel free to check out this article for more information about customizing reports in QuickBooks Desktop

Please don’t hesitate to reach us again if you have other questions while managing reports in QuickBooks. It'd be my pleasure to help,
QBO has two "dimensions" that can be selected from drop-down lists at the transaction level and used as columns on a balance sheet: Class and Location. Desktop only has Class. Does anyone know a work-around in Desktop (we have Accountant Desktop 2019) to use in sorting a balance sheet instead of Location when Class is already being used for something else? For example, Class shows whether assets are for Education, Restricted, or Unrestricted, and this field would show whether they are in Cleveland, Birmingham, Des Moines, etc. I thought about making Cleveland an "other name" and entering it in the "name" field on all relevant balance sheet transactions, but I don't see a way to sort a balance sheet by "name", other than exporting to Excel and sorting there (which is cumbersome). There are various fields available for certain income statement items, eg Customer:Job, but other than class, I don't see any fields balance sheet transactions that can be used developing report columns.
Hello there, Sam-I-Am.
Currently, being able to sort Balance Sheet by name is unavailable In QuickBooks Desktop. What you can do is to customize the existing Balance Sheets and select the locations that you only need in the report.
While QuickBooks aims to find new ways to make sure that your product meets your needs, It's a good idea though, and we'll take note of this and may include this option in the future. I'd also encourage you to check our QuickBooks New Features to be updated of the latest product enhancements.
Here's how:
Please don't hesitate to reach back out to me if you have any other QuickBooks questions . I'll be around to help you out.
I have quickbooks pro 2019. I have been trying to produce a balance sheet by class to no avail. Can I produce an accurate balance sheet for a single class using the filter function? Does class apply to the applicable balance sheet accounts? can anyone help?
Hey there, Harrynronnyquestion.
I'm happy to help you out today. While you can't exactly filter the Balance sheet detail report by a single class, what you can do is sort it by Class. You can also customize the report to include or exclude whichever columns you want. Follow these steps below:
I'm also including a couple helpful links for you to check out:
If you have any other questions, feel free to post here anytime. Thank you for your time and have a lovely afternoon.
