Glad to have you in the Community today, Molly12.
The good news is you can change how the information displays in the Income Statement. Let’s edit the data displayed in the Distribution account.
Here’s how:
For an overview of how to tailor the information displayed on the financial reports, see the following article. It also contains screenshots for visual reference and steps to edit columns, accounts, etc: Customize.

The chart I am working with assigned numbers to account by alphabetic name on the account I need them sorted for reports by functional expense category. Consequently, many of my accounts I wish to group in sub-accounts are not in numeric order. Example
The following are sub-accounts of 8060 Department Expenses
8240 Math
8250 Physical Education
8260 Robotics
8270 Science
8280 Soccer
I would rather have them as sub -accounts of 3 different departments:
8240 Math - Academics
8250 Physical Education - Academics
8260 Robotics - Activities
8270 Science - Academics
8280 Soccer - Athletics
But I am uncertain if the qccount number sequencing matters when i re-arrange in different sub-accounts. There are over 40 accounts I would like to organize in 3 different parent accounts arrangements.
Will I have issues if my sub-account numbers are out of sequence from the parent number?
It's good to see you back, @kmeans.
Right now, the option you're looking for is unavailable. Since QuickBooks Online will only allow 1 parent account for each sub-accounts. For the meantime, you can follow the answer provided by my colleague @Rasa-LilaM as a workaround.
To ensure your idea is heard, I'll gladly pass your feedback along.

I see where my explanation was not completely clear.
I do not want an account to be a sub of more than one parent. I am simply asking if sub-accounts of a parent have to be in numerical order. Example
Athletics parent will have the following sub-accounts:
8080
8100
8110
8120
8140
8160
8180
Academics parent will have the following sub-accounts:
8130
8170
8190
Activities parent will have the following sub-accounts:
8090
8150
Notice how each parent has accounts that are not in numeric order? Will this be a problem?
You're doing great on organizing your sub-accounts, @kmeans.
I appreciate you clarifying things about your concern. Allow me to step in and provide some information about the sub-accounts.
Creating sub-accounts that are not in numeric order isn't a problem in QuickBooks. What you're trying to achieve will keep your Chart of Accounts organized and make more detailed reports.
Also, please know that the Profit and Loss report will show each parent accounts with their sub-accounts in sequence. If you want to display those accounts in the report, you can follow the steps provided by my colleague Rasa-LilaM above.
