The hard part for us is that we are a mobile company so 90% of our stock is in our service trailer. It was my understanding that in order to bill remotely from our office we pretty much had to run QBO instead of the desktop version. Same with when I’m working out of town and need to do office work offsite…
If the desktop version allowed those things to happen I’d gladly revisit it as an option 😊

You can utilize a 3rd party inventory management/field sales app on your mobile and it will sync with your QB Desktop file at your back office.
I think I may have our office look into this as an option, thanks!
Its 2 WHOLE YEARS LATER....
And QB is still behind the times. I'm changing asap.
There are two options available in your app center. one has a 1 star rating and the other has no ratings. Why is the online version still not able to use barcode scanning as inventory control?
I can recommend a 5 star app in the Intuit marketplace. Looks like you missed it.
Contact me in private and I will introduce you to the app developer to schedule a demo. Subscription plans start at $39/month for 2 users + 1 smartphone as scanner + 1 warehouse.
Thanks for joining this conversation, @lschleiger.
I'm here to help make sure this is taken care of for you.
I can see how having this option in QuickBooks Online (QBO) would be helpful for you and your business. While this feature isn't available yet, I highly suggest sending feedback directly to our product developers. They're always looking for ideas to consider on how to improve QBO.
Here's how to submit feedback:
In the meantime, you can try the third-party apps recommended above as a workaround.

Sadly, that's the way i do it. I came here looking for a solution. I run a screenprinting business and it's very tedious every time a run of shirts gets printed, I have to manually adjust the quantity of blank shirts, then receive the printed version from a dummy vendor named in-house. If I had a barcode scanner, I could put bar code labels on the boxes of blank shirts to scan when those blanks are being used to auto subtract from inventory. Hopefully, this feature gets added soon.
2022, almost 2023 still no Barcode scanning?
competition offers more with the subscription paid at QBO.
@lschleiger What app is that?
Hi,
Its now 2023, so almost 5 years since this thread started.
There seem to be plenty of users wanting the Barcode scanning function on QB online. Can we get a timeline on this please or at least push this with you development team?
Thanks
well if they dont intend to implement this on QB online because they want to keep it to only the QB Desktop plan; they should at least be upfront about it.
Im just a bit annoyed that QB online is supposed to be an upgrade but that there isnt access to this barcode functionality...
Is there a phone number for technical questions about QR scanning?
I wanted to learn more about scanning QB qr codes?
I understand how much you wanted to talk with a QuickBooks expert about QR scanning, @Mark348. Let me route you to the best support available to answer your technical queries.

Feel free to keep me posted on how it goes or if you have any further questions in QBO. If you could add a comment below, I'll be more than happy to help you.
Why even respond to this if you aren't going to read it?
You work for QUICKBOOKS.
This post is about BARCODE SCANNING. NOT QR CODE SCANNING.
WE HAVE CANCELLED EVERY ASPECT OF QB EXCEPT THE ONLINE ACCOUNTING SO WE HAVE ACCESS TO OLD RECORDS AND AS SOON AS THIS YEAR HAS COME TO A CLOSE.... SO HAS OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH QB.
THOSE OF YOU WHO NEED SERIALIZATION INCLUDED IN YOUR ERP, [removed].
THEY BUILT ME NEW INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE WITH SERIALIZATION AND THEY SPENT QUALITY TIME FOCUSING ON OUR BUSINESS TO BUILD IT THE WAY WE NEEDED IT.
IT WAS NOT EXPENSIVE AND MONTHLY IT'S CHEAPER THAN QB (WHICH DOESN'T OFFER ANY OF THIS)
TELL THEM RAY-PAC SENT YOU!
If QB was interested, they would have figured this out by now.
THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN MAKING THIS AN OPTION.
JUST OWN UP TO IT QB!
Quickbooks Desktop is a far superior program. I tell my clients that QBO is not for real grown up businesses. If you want your business to succeed, do it on desktop. We have over 450 clients on desktop and 4 on QBO.
Desktop is the only way to go. QBO is substandard
TradeGecko (before they acquired and downgraded its features) has this option. You need to use a 3rd party inventory management with the barcoding feature to integrate with QB Online.
It's absurd that QBO does not have the same inventory functionality as Quickbooks Desktop. I feel like I made a huge mistake moving to QBO. No Whsl field, No field for an EAN/UPC. Has anyone at QBO ever run a business? These key fields are critical for modern multi-channel businesses and scanning/shipping/receiving.
Hi, @fosterlohr.
We recognize the importance of having those inventory functionalities in QuickBooks Online (QBO) for a more efficient and smoother workflow. However, they aren't available in QBO as of now.
To help improve your experience with QBO, your valuable feedback will be shared with our product development team.
Here's how to send it:
1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Feedback.
2. Enter your product suggestions.
3. Hit Next to submit.
I'll add this supplementary article to help you set up your inventory after converting from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QBO: Set up inventory after converting from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

Considering this is 3+ years on and there's still no solution, am I safe to assume there's no interest on the QBO team to fix this issue in QBO?
At a minimum, there should be field in the inventory that allow for Whsl and EAN/UPC.
We are using the TC21 mobile bar code scanner to move inventory from station to station as built. Teh issue is that just moving it does not relieve inventory, so we have to schedule a build every time we move a batch. No biggie , but I don't want a bunch of computers on the shop floor. We have to go back to the computer ( we are using desktop platinum ) and schedule a build , then move it. There should be a way to use the mobile scanners on the floor to schedule the build and relive the inventory from that station when we move it.
