I'll walk you through the process of reactivating an inactive contractor in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @idf_8c4e6f40-062.

You can find inactive contractors in the Vendors tab. Follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the Expenses tab.
  2. Select Vendors.
  3. Click the small Gear icon above the Action column.
  4. Tick the Include inactive box.
  5. Tap the Make active link under the Action column.

In case you need to make changes to a contractor's information, keep this article for future reference: Edit Contractor Information.

Tag me in a comment below if you have other questions about contractors in QBO. I'll be around to help you out. Have a pleasant day!

Hi Ryan and thanks.

But I don't have a Vendors tab anywhere. Perhaps I'm on a different plan?

Thank you for getting back to us, idf_8c4e6f40-062.

The steps provided by my colleague Ryan are for QuickBooks Online. While I'm unable to pull up an account here in the Community Forum, you can take a screenshot of your account. This way, I'll be able to check which QuickBooks plan you have.

Once you have the file, click the Reply button below, then attach the screenshot.

I'm adding this link to also help you pay contractors once you activate them: Learn how to pay your contractors using direct deposit in QuickBooks or Intuit Payroll.

I'll keep this post while waiting for your response. Thank you and stay safe!

Hello, idf_8c4e6f40-062.

I'll hop on to this thread and help you reactivate your contractor in QuickBooks.

I see that you're using the standalone payroll service. You were actually on the right page to reactivate your contractors. All you need to do is to set your view to Inactive or All. I'll show the steps below:

  1. Go to the Contractors page.
  2. Select Inactive or All from the drop-down menu beside the search box.
  3. Select your inactive contractor (indicated with a (deleted) tag beside their names).
  4. On their profile, set the drop-down menu to Mark as active (located under their name).

When you've reactivated your contractor, you can start paying them in QuickBooks

Need to check your liabilities and payroll amounts from reports? Your plans has a variety of payrolls reports you can run. Check out this article if you need help running one: Run payroll reports

If you'd like to do other payroll tasks like managing your employees, please let me know. I'm still with you in every step of the way.

Thanks, but whoops!

I have no access to my inactive contractors at all. Could it be because they are all inactive right now?

This is what I see on my Contractor's page -- there's nothing to click or manipulate at all.

Hi there, idf_8c4e6f40-062.

There are times that your browser is full of frequently-accessed page resources, thus causing websites, like QuickBooks Online (QBO) to act weirdly. This can be the reason why your contractors list.

Let's consider accessing the website and logging into your account using a private browser so we can isolate this issue. To do so:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: Command Option

If this works, you can clear your regular browser's cache so the system can start fresh. But if you get the same results while using a private browser, use a different browser app to roll out the possibility of a browser-related issue.

I'm adding this article to learn more about create and file 1099s using QuickBooks Online to prepare for the 2021 tax season.

Feel free to click the Reply button below if you have other concerns. I'll be around to lend a helping hand. Take care always.

Hello again,

Nope, it's not a browser issue. I've gone incognito, cleared cache, and tried another browser. Still nothing.

I think the issue is that I've inactivated all of my contractors, possibly?

I appreciate you performing basic troubleshooting steps to fix and reactivate your contractor, @idf_8c4e6f40-062.

Currently, we have an ongoing investigation where the lists of contractors are not showing on the page. Rest assured that our product engineers are diligently working for a fix.

Also, to ensure you'll get an update about the resolution status, I recommend contacting our support team. This way, they can add your company to the list of affected users and provide this investigation number for easy tracking: INV-59689.

Here are our business hours so you can reach us at a time convenient to you. Then you can follow the steps below:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Select the Help (?) menu.
  3. Choose the Assistant tab.
  4. Click the Talk to a human option.

  5. Select Get help from a human.

  6. Click either Chat with us or Have us call you button.

Once everything is settled, you can use the information presented by my colleagues above on how to reactivate a contractor. Otherwise, you can utilize this to help you manage your workers in QuickBooks Online: Add, edit and inactivate contractors

Thank you for your patience while we work for a fix. Please know that you can always get back to this post if you have any other questions with QuickBooks Online. I'll be more than happy to assist you again.

I added a fake contractor in order to populate the contractor list (with only the fake contractor as active). Then the drop down menu magically appeared. Then you can select the "inactives" from the drop-down menu. Just terrible. Absolute doo doo. This should not have to be this difficult.
