Hi there, same type of problem trying to make an inactive account active, but the small gear @ chart of account (close to the printer) does not prompt any options -- any way that I can fix that?
Thanks for sharing this with us, @ben. I understand some options may not appear in the QuickBooks Online account. Let's resolve this so you can set it to active accounts in the Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks Online.
Let's try to use an incognito window to see if the option will appear there. If the tab from the Small Gear icon under the Chart of Account screen appears, we can try to clear the browser's cache from your regular browser.
Here are the shortcuts to incognito browsers:
Furthermore, the cache can interfere with and affects the functionality of QuickBooks and result in missing tabs and features, thus, clearing the cache to lessen issues that arise when using QuickBooks.
I'm adding this page for your guide handling your accounts in the Chart of Accounts: Make an account inactive on your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.
Keep me posted if you have more clarification with your QuickBooks-related tasks like banking transactions. I'm delighted to assist you further.
Thanks for your help, Christine! Problem solved.
Ben

I mistakenly made some charts of accounts inactive (I am currently just setting everything up). When I go to the gear and choose - show all inactive accounts with the active accounts, click on the button to make active, it is not working. Please advise. Thank you.
Hello there, @Kkomander. I'm here to provide information on making an active account from your QuickBooks Online (QBO) chart of accounts (COA).
In the meantime, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to fix this. There are times when the browser is full of frequently accessed page resources, which causes some errors or unusual responses. Let's start accessing your account using a different or private browser. You can use either of these shortcut keys:
May I also know what error you have encountered? This way, we can better isolate this matter.
Once logged in, try to make the account active. If it works, I recommend clearing your browser's cache. Doing so will remove the historical data and access QuickBooks with a clean slate. You can also switch to a different supported browser.
I've added these articles so you can get more information and find out how to make an account active again, managing the default and special accounts:
I appreciate your patience as we try to come up with a solution. If you have any further inquiries regarding COA or anything else about QuickBooks, kindly let me know. I'm always willing to assist. Keep safe.
I tried all of those things and nothing worked. I spent a lot of time adding GL accounts and while making a lot of default accounts inactive, many of the accounts I added became inactive and I cannot fix that. The inactive button doesn't work at all. Nothing happens when you click on it.
I need some assistance please.

I had the same problem with QB Desktop (Accountant 2018). I used the verify and rebuild utility tools, however, the result showed there was nothing wrong with my data file. Then I read another user about checking the item, COGS, etc. Thinking about that, I realized that the account I was trying to make active was a subaccount, and the main account was inactive. When I pulled up the main account, the inactive box was not grayed out, so I clicked the box and removed the "make inactive" check mark. After selecting OK, QB prompted me if I wanted to make the subaccounts active, and I said yes. Then, the inactive subaccount was active. If I answered no to making the subaccounts inactive, even though the main account was active, the subaccount was inactive, and the box was grayed out. So you must answer yes to make the subaccounts when you make the main account active.
