How do I set up a sub account? Chart of Accounts>New it creates a new category only. Previously I'd get a pop up with details and subaccount box but no longer there.

How do I set up a sub account? Chart of Accounts>New it creates a new category only. Previously I'd get a pop up with details and subaccount box but no longer there.

None of the solutions above worked so I opened a chat.  He guided me to change to the accountant view instead of business view.  Once in accountant view, I can see the account detail options.

Thank you for visiting the QuickBooks Community. I'll be sharing troubleshooting instructions to ensure you're able to create a subaccount in QuickBooks Online. Beforehand, I'll provide first detailed instructions on how to perform or achieve this matter to make sure that you're taking the proper steps. 

 

To start with, I suggest going to the Chart of Accounts page and click the New button if you're creating a new subaccount under an existing account.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the Gear and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the New button.
  3. Select the account type and detail type. Click the Is sub-account box and enter the parent account.
  4. Give your new subaccount a name. You can also add a description.
  5. Fill in the other necessary field.
  6. Select Save and Close.

 

If you're changing an existing account into a subaccount, please follow the steps below.

 

  1. Go to the Gear ⚙ and select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the account and select the small arrow in the Action column.
  3. Choose Edit.
  4. Select Is sub-account box. Then, choose the specific parent account in the list.
  5. Click Save and Close.

If the issue persists, a cache full of history and temp files can cause unexpected behaviors, such as being unable to see the subaccount box. I recommend logging in to your QuickBooks account using a private browser. This is to rule out the possibility of a webpage issue, and private browsing doesn't store local files or cache.

 

Use these keyboard shortcuts based on the browser you're using:

 

  • For Firefox or Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  • For Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + N.
  • For Safari, hold down Command + Shift + N.

 

If it works in incognito, I recommend clearing the cache of your regular browser. This removes the history or log of sites so you can start with a clean slate. You can check this article to see the steps: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online.

 

If the steps above didn't work, use another supported browser as alternatives.

Thanks for the instructions and this is what I previously was able to do.  The issue is that when I click new I am getting options to create a new category, it is not giving me the new account pop up with the account detail and sub account options.  It used to work so I’m not sure what happened.  I’ve tried safari and chrome and cleared my cookies and cache.

I have one more steps to try. You'll want to log in as Admin in QuickBooks. Then, follow the steps provided by my peer above to add a new account.

 

If you're still unable to see the option, please contact our Customer Care Support so we can create a ticket for you and investigate further. Here's how to reach out:

 

  1. Go to Help.
  2. Select Contact Us.
  3. Enter a brief description of the issue, then tap Continue.
  4. Click either Chat or Callback.

None of these solutions worked so I opened a chat.  We resolved the issue by switching from “business view” to “accountant view”.
